“Finally, I want to remind all parents and families about the best ways to keep our campus safe. Many of us are on edge after the recent shooting at Mount Tabor High School, and those concerns are natural and understandable. But they can also lead to unnecessary panic when misinformation is shared on social media and in other ways. To help keep false rumors from spreading, please only share information that you can personally verify, and make sure you share it with the right people. If you hear or see something of concern, tell a school administrator, SRO or law enforcement, who will fully investigate the matter. And please remind your children that making threatening remarks, even if intended as a joke, can lead to serious legal consequences. By following these guidelines, we can ensure that our law enforcement partners are focused on what really matters. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Well, that’s all I have for today.  Thank you and have a great evening.

Good evening Mendenhall Families!  This is Principal George Green with a few reminders for this week.

There will be no school for students and staff on this Monday, September 6th.  School will resume at our regular time on Tuesday morning.

Please join us for a virtual PTA meeting on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.  The link to the meeting may be found on the school’s website.

McDonald’s Fundraiser Night, which is sponsored by the PTA, will take place this Thursday.  Be sure to let them know that you are from Mendenhall when placing your order.

Thank you for your continued patience and support with the car rider line.  Please do not drop off students on Willoughby Blvd or any surrounding streets during the mornings.  This poses a potential safety hazard with students having to cross busy streets.

If your child is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, do not send them to school.  Additionally, if they have recently taken a COVID test and are awaiting results, do not send them to school until negative results are received and/or they are symptom free.

    8/29/21

Good evening Mendenhall Families!  This is Principal George Green with a few reminders for this week.

Thank you for a great first week back in school!  It has been very exciting to see everyone learning under one roof again.

This year we have about 400 vehicles that are utilizing the car rider line each afternoon, and major improvements have been made with the flow of traffic throughout the week.  We use an automated system, via the tv monitors in the school, that signalsyour child to the front of the school when your number from the blue sheet on your car’s dashboard is entered in the database.  There is a staff member who walks on Willoughby Blvd. who enters these numbers for each student every day.  If you get in front of another car without the staff member entering your number, then your students name is not shown on the screen byour automated system.  It is helpful to remain patient and calm during this process because of the sheer number of students who are car riders this year. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

If your child is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, do not send them to school.  Additionally, if they have recently taken a COVID test and are awaiting results, do not send them to school until negative results are received and/or they are symptom free.

Attention all 7th graders.  Be sure to turn in your required immunization records before the 30-day deadline.  All seventh graders are required to have T-dap and MCV vaccines.

If your student requires medication at school, a medication authorization form must be completed by a doctor and turned into the front office along with the medication.

Football tryouts have been extended through Thursday, September 2nd of this week.

And finally, there will be a virtual PTA meeting on Tuesday, September 7th at 6:00 pm via Zoom.

Well, that’s all I have for today. Thank you and have a great evening.

     George Green
    Principal

    8/23/21

Good evening Mendenhall Families!  This is Principal George Green with a quick message concerning our arrival and dismissal process for car riders and how to make a request for bus transportation.

Thank you for a great first day back!  In order to help with the efficiency and safety of all students in the car rider area, we will need your help.

All cars should enter the car rider line at the second u turn on Willoughby. Cars should not try to enter the line at St. Regis. It causes a huge back up for cars trying to continue on Willoughby. Once on campus, all cars should pull into the right most lane.  In the mornings, it is helpful if all students have their items ready to go and can exit the car quickly so that all cars in the line can pull into the exit lane (the middle lane) simultaneously. This helps move the line quickly and efficiently for all!

Please continue pulling all the way down in both the mornings and afternoons so that we can unload or load as many students as possible without disruption in the process. Your cooperation will make this process flow smoothly.

Bus transportation requests must be made each year, in order for students to ride the bus to school.  The request can be made by visiting the Guilford County Schools website at www.gcsnc.com.  The request may take up to 10 days in order to be finalized.  You will receive a confirmation email once the process is complete.

That’s all I have for today.  Thank you and have a great evening.

    George Green
    Principal

    8th Grade Band Concert:

The 8th Grade Mendenhall Mustang band will perform a private, safe, and socially distanced outdoor band concert for 8th grade parents this Tuesday, May 11th at 5:30 P.M. with a rain date scheduled for May 13th at the same time.

    • Parents must stay at or inside their car to ensure proper state distancing safety for student performers due to state concert regulations.
    • We ask that families do everything to help by limiting car capacity to one car per 8th grade band member due to very limited parking in the A and B building parking lots.
    • We are working on live streaming the concert to provide 8th grade band family members a way to see and hear the concert whether in person at their car or away from the school.
    • Students will have all required instrument PPE protection provided by the GCS Arts department.

We have also collaborated with a local WFMY2 film crew, and we thank them for working with our band in keeping the music flowing from our schools!   We are thrilled to have an important concert honoring the 8thgrade band students who are moving on to high school this fall, and furthermore this will be the first band concert since December of 2019 for Mendenhall Middle school. Thank you to our band director, Brent Davis, our community partner, WFMY, and all school and community members for your cooperation in keeping the concert safe and to all for supporting our music in GCS schools!

    • Friday’s picture schedule is for the Bustle Team, the Ettefagh Team, and the Simon, Meier, Self, and Maness Team.

    Pictures for Remote-Only Students

    • Remote-Only Students may come in on Tuesday, April 27th at 3:45pm to have their pictures made.  Please park in the bus parking lot and come to the Gym for pictures.

    PAYMENT:

    • Pictures can be purchased online at Lifetouch.com using ID #EVT8MDN7T or
    • Pictures may be paid for by check made out to LifeTouch or
    • Pictures may be paid for with payment of exact cash.

    Yearbook Info:

In addition, don’t forget to order your yearbook!  Yearbook information was attached to the picture form that went home on April 19th.

    Rising 7th Graders:

    • To all of our WONDERFUL 6th graders: We are so excited about you becoming 7th graders next year!
    • As a 7th grader, you must have your immunizations in order to attend school and stay in school.  It is a state law and, unfortunately, schools have to send students home who don’t have their 7th grade vaccinations within the first 20 days.
    • So, please add getting your shots to your summer “to do” list or make your appointment before June so you can miss the rush of the summer.  This way we can see everyone's bright smiley faces in the fall!

Car Rider Numbers and Traffic Patterns Make the Process so Much Faster:

    • Car Rider Numbers:

Please take a moment to ask your child what their car rider number is so that you can have it ready for our staff in the afternoons.  This enables it to be entered on the TV screen quickly and correctly in the classroom!

Car rider numbers are usually the last 4 digits of your child’s lunch number/student ID number unless told otherwise.  If you are unsure, please call our front office before the dismissal time period and we’ll be happy to verify the number for you!

    • Traffic Patterns:

Thank you for the AMAZING job you have done to help transition hundreds of car riders in 20 minutes or less during both arrival and dismissal!  Wow!😊

Thank you for entering the line at the 2nd U-turn on Willoughby and also not blocking St. Regis but, instead, crossing over and going to the 2nd U-turn on Willoughby.

In the mornings, it is helpful if all students have their items ready to go and can exit the car quickly so that all cars in the line can pull into the exit lane simultaneously.  This helps move the line quickly and efficiently for all!

Please continue pulling ALL THE WAY DOWN in both the mornings and afternoons so that we can unload or load as many students as possible without disruption in the process.  Your cooperation has made this process flow smoothly – thank you so much!

    Report Cards:

For your convenience, Guilford County now provides electronic report cards.  As a friendly reminder, your child’s report card was sent via email last week to the parent and student emails on file within PowerSchool.  The report card will need to be accessed/opened within seven days.  If you need a hard copy, please contact the school to request a copy.  We are happy to accommodate.

    Thank you for your partnership!

    Looking forward to this week,

    Week of April 12, 2021

Thank you for your partnership with Mendenhall.  We know that this has been more than a learning curve for all.  It has been quite the challenge to learn and implement safety protocols while balancing the day to day hybrid teaching model of face-to-face and remote instruction but our teachers and support staff are adaptable, resilient, and their care for our students runs deep!  Thank you for your support of their work during continued transition!  We appreciate the feedback you have provided and want you to know that our aim is always to improve our daily practices for the good of all of our students.  If your child is in need of academic, social, or emotional support, please reach out to our teachers, support staff, or administration so that we can problem solve with you.  Thank you again for your belief and support.  It means a great deal to all of us!

5-Day Instruction for Current Face-to-Face Students and Requested Changes:

Students will begin 5-day instruction on Monday, April 19.  I want to take a moment to provide extra clarity regarding dates.  If you are part of a group of students originally returning on April 12 for five days a week, the district has changed this date to Monday, April 19.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but, at this point, the district is no longer allowing requests for Face-to-Face instruction and students who opted for Remote instruction must remain remote.

NWEA Testing Next Week & Asynchronous Learning:

NWEA TESTING FOR F2F STUDENTS:  All Face-to-Face students will take the NWEA Test in person this week.  Teachers will administer Reading to Cohort A students on Monday and Cohort B students on Thursday.  Teachers will administer Math to Cohort A students on Tuesday and Cohort B students on Friday.

LESSONS:  In order to provide uninterrupted remote instruction for all students next week, we have asked our teachers to post pre-recorded lessons as in-person testing will interrupt both our in-person and remote schedules.

NWEA TESTING FOR REMOTE STUDENTS:  Our Remote Only students who have not come into the building to test, will take both tests remotely on Wednesday beginning at 9am.  Remote Only students should look for a Teams invite from an Encore Teacher.

The transition plan for students remains the same as previously communicated – here are details that will help you envision the school day:

Core Classes:  Students will still have one transition each day.  Teachers will rotate for each Core class instead of students changing classes.  For Core classes, students will report to their Homeroom.  This is noted in both a student’s PowerSchool schedule and on the schedule information received by their teacher in Canvas Messaging (look at the section labeled “Report To Room Number”).  The class grouping for Homeroom is usually a student’s math class.

Lunch Time:  Students will eat lunch in the same room as their Homeroom grouping noted above and if they order lunch at school it will be delivered to the classroom. All students may eat for free at school each day (both breakfast and lunch).  For any student who chooses to eat lunch, they will have a choice of hot entrée daily.  If your child chooses to bring a lunch, please help us by sending lunch with your child instead of dropping off lunch daily.  If your child forgets lunch, please call the school at 336.545.2000 ahead of time to help us follow COVID19 protocols.

    February 24, 2021

    Good Evening Mendenhall Families,

Our new student computers have arrived!

All FACE-TO-FACE students:  If you checked one out, please bring back your school-issued device and charger when you come to school.   You must return the old device in order to receive a new Chromebook.  For all REMOTE ONLY students, information will be posted to your Canvas pages to make an appointment for pick up.

Also, parents of Face-to-Face students, please complete the pupil data sheets coming home with students; we want to make sure all contact information is accurate.

    2-22-21 - afternoon message

Greetings!  This is Kris Vecchione, principal at Mendenhall, calling to let you know that earlier today we had the smell of gas in an area of our building not being used by students.  Out of precaution, we proactively evacuated and relocated students to our B Bldg.  The Fire Department and GCS Maintenance worked together to resolve the issue.  Our students did an outstanding job following directions, socially distancing while moving, and relocating quickly.

Thank you so much for an excellent first day!  We look forward to seeing students tomorrow.

Please present the green iPass screen on a cell phone upon arrival.    Your child and the PowerSchool back up email will both receive emails daily or you can fill out the attestation form on the APP.  All Attestation APP information can be found on our website or in Connect Ed messages.

    Have a great afternoon,

    1. New Schedules:

FACE-TO-FACE STUDENTS FINDING THEIR FACE-TO-FACE SCHEDULES:   You don’t need to do anything ahead of time to find your new face-to-face schedule.  All face-to-face learners will receive their schedule (a new “order of classes”) during their first class of the day at Mendenhall.  Each teacher throughout the day will spend a little time during class reviewing the changes in the schedule/new order of classes that students will experience.

All 6th grade students received individualized schedule information from their teachers through Canvas Messaging.

All 7th and 8th grade students will receive schedule information the week prior to students being in the building.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Tomorrow (Monday, January 18):   Tomorrow we won’t have live instruction as it is a holiday and we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.  As a pastor and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Dr. King was known for his gift of speech.  According to his daughter, Dr. Bernice A. King, her father’s ultimate dream was to “have people from all backgrounds come together and celebrate differences as well as commonalities.”  King’s vision remains unfulfilled in many ways as he expressed the desire that society learn ‘the simple art of living together as brothers.’  So let’s reflect and go into the next two day considering the answer to this question that Dr. King asked of us all:  Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?

Pick Up Date for Math Materials on TUESDAY!  (grades 6,7,8):  Between the holiday on Monday and the teacher workday on Tuesday, students have no live instruction on both Monday and Tuesday.

However, we are holding a materials pick up on Tues., Jan. 19 between 11a-1p or 4-6p.

Please drive through the bus parking lot near both buildings (to the left of the main building).

If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school at 336-545-2000.

Top 4 Habits to Improve Grades & Understanding:

Do you want to improve grades in Qtr. 3?

Teachers say that the VAST MAJORITY of their students who ATTEND CLASSES (or at least WATCH ALL CLASSES later if they miss a live class), are doing very well academically!  It makes a huge difference!

-Check in each day (attendance button) and STAY to attend EACH live class every day!   😊

-Watch recorded lessons if you absolutely cannot attend live classes.  Attend all that you can.

-Stay as “caught up” as possible in both Core AND Encore by doing the assignments for that day.

-Reach out to your teacher right away if you are having trouble with something.

    Dear MMS Families,

    Greetings all!

    Thank You for Your Patience

As we prepare for the much-anticipated return of our “face-to-face students,” and adjust to the many changes, I just wanted to let you know that other than student and staff safety, we have placed student stability at the top of our priority list.  We have focused on ensuring that both our “remote-only students” and “face-to-face students” would maintain as much normalcy as possible in their daily routines no matter what changes they might have to experience as we adjust times of classes.   (The adjustment of class times won’t occur until students return to face-to-face learning.)

Keeping Students with the Same Teachers

One of our main goals has been, no matter how many times the pieces of the puzzle have shifted, to keep students on the same team, with the same teachers, during this time of transition.  This has proven to be an impossible feat for many schools with as many remote learners as MMS.  Mendenhall has a larger number of remote-only students, compared to many other middle schools in the district.  We have also continued to make shifts with each parent verification period that has occurred.

    Goal of Student Stability Achieved

However, we are happy to report that the main change that most students will experience is only a shift in their order of classes.  Almost all of our students will maintain classes with their original teachers, half of the week (for 6th grade) or all of the week (for 7th and 8th).   This is due to teachers now teaching different schedules, part of the day teaching live face-to-face students and other parts of the day teaching online to their remote students.   Please note that if you have children in different grade levels, the Sixth Grade plan looks quite different than the 7th and 8th Grade plans.  We will continue to update you as we approach the dates of face-to-face learners returning and all students changing class times/order of classes at that time.  In the meantime, please reach out to us if you have questions.

Thank you again for your support of Mendenhall.  We love our families and our students!

    -Ms. Vecchione

    1. Interims Tests Start Tomorrow & It’s Not Too Late to Turn in Work That’s Late!   Teachers will call all students tomorrow morning between 8am and 11am and help with logging on to Interim Tests.  If your child is failing a class, they will also coach them in this area.  Teachers will post the Interim Test DIRECTIONS and LINKS on Canvas pages.  Students do not have to wait on a phone call to begin their test.  After their Interim Test each day, students should check PowerSchool and ensure that they have turned in any missing/late work.  In order to ensure that a teacher has time to grade late work that that has been submitted, work should be turned in as soon as possible this week, as the end of the quarter is Friday!  Thank you!  😊

    1. Top 4 Habits to Improve Grades & Understanding:

You can improve grades in Qtr. 3 with just these steps!

Teachers say that the VAST MAJORITY of their students who ATTEND CLASSES (or at least WATCH ALL CLASSES later if they miss a live class), are doing very well academically!  It makes a huge difference!

    1. New Times for Classes Once Face-to-Face Learning Begins for All:

FACE-TO-FACE STUDENTS FINDING THEIR FACE-TO-FACE SCHEDULES/TIMES FOR CLASSES:   You don’t need to do anything ahead of time to find your new face-to-face schedule.  All face-to-face learners will receive their schedule (a new “order of classes” – not new teachers) during their first class of the day at Mendenhall.  Each teacher throughout the day will spend a little time during class reviewing new order of classes.

FACE-TO-FACE STUDENTS FINDING THEIR REMOTE SCHEDULES/TIMES FOR CLASSES:   Face-to-face learners (who also attend remote classes half of the week) will log on to their Core Canvas Courses to find the new order of remote classes and times that their remote classes will be held.

REMOTE-ONLY STUDENTS FINDING THEIR REMOTE SCHEDULES/TIMES FOR CLASSES:

-6th grade remote-only students will receive a phone call from remote teachers who will individually walk them through their new schedule/times to attend classes (different than 7th/8th grade).

-7th and 8th grade remote-only learners will log on to their Core Canvas Courses to find the new order of classes and times that remote classes will be held.  Teams/Teachers have not changed.

    1. Wednesdays Will be the New Fridays Once Face-to-Face Learning Begins:   When we return face-to-face, Wednesdays will replace Fridays as the new Asynchronous/Independent learning day each week.  Fridays will have live instruction as they will also replace Wednesdays.  This will begin the first full week of face-to-face instruction: the week of January 25.

    Messages for Face-to-Face Learners:

Welcome back!   We look forward to seeing you!  😊

    1. How do I know which days my child returns to school as a face-to-face learner?  If your child is registered to return to school for face-to-face instruction, you should have received a Connect Ed call (and an email if you have an email address registered with our Data Manager) telling which days your child is scheduled to attend classes each week.

    1. Returning to school but forgot to complete the Bus Request Form?   If you need bus transportation but forgot to fill out the form previously, please fill out the Bus/Transportation Preference Form (click link here or fill out form on the GCS Transportation website).

    1. How do I access my child’s bus information?   Log onto PowerSchool or have your child pull up their account.  GCS has now loaded all bus information to include:

-Morning Bus Number & Afternoon Bus Number (sometimes different bus numbers!)

-Times for Pick Up/Drop Off (be at the bus stop 10 minutes early in the morning)

-Street Address of the Bus Stop

    1. Arrival Time & Dismissal Time:  Mendenhall’s arrival and dismissal times have changed.  Although our tardy bell will now be at 8:55am, car riders and bus riders may begin off-loading at 8:35am.  Dismissal begins at 3:25pm.

    1. Temperature & Attestation Checks:  Temperatures of students will be taken upon arrival at school.  If a student if running a fever upon arrival, they will not enter classroom spaces and CDC Guidelines will be followed.  Attestation questions will also be asked/filled out/documented.

    1. Bookbags & Supplies:   Students will not have access to lockers and will carry bookbags to class so please allow your child to pack lightly with access to personal pens, pencils, folder(s), notebooks, and full water bottle each day.  Please avoid too many heavy, bulky binders.

    1. Come to School Daily with Filled Water Bottle:  Please allow your child to come to school with a FULL water bottle since water fountains are closed and this will help minimize wait time and student contact at the water cooler.  No other beverages except at lunch time, please.

    1. Cell Phones:  Cell phones are normally kept in student bookbags which are then stored in lockers.  Cell phones will continue to be stored in student bookbags only and hung on the back of a student’s chair.

    1. Computers at School:  Student computers are expected to arrive soon and we are excited about this!  We will let you know as soon as they are here so we can begin the checkout process for all students.  At this point, teachers are planning lessons for face-to-face learners that do not require computers while at school.

Thanks so much for your support.  Have a great evening,

    January 4- Teacher Workday

Don’t forget that tomorrow is a teacher workday. Use tomorrow as an opportunity to log into powerschool and check all missing work!  😊  January 15 is the end of quarter deadline, with no extensions this quarter.  We want ALL of our students to use the next two weeks to ensure they have all work submitted. Tomorrow is a great opportunity to get this started!

Change of Date for Middle School Re-Entry

A few days ago you should have received a district message letting parents know that GCS has postponed the re-entry date for middle schoolers.  Much more detailed information will come this week from Mendenhall for your planning purposes.

    Remote Schedule for All Learners

Until face-to-face learners return, all students will continue to use the same remote schedule that they used prior to winter break.  Student teachers/teams will not change.   Much more detailed information will come this week from Mendenhall for your planning purposes.

    Bus Transportation Needed?

If your child will need bus transportation as a face-to-face learner and you have not filled out the form previously, please fill out Bus Transportation Form.

Thank you and happy new year!

    PTA REFLECTIONS WINNERS FOR MENDENHALL

    • Congratulations to two of our amazing 6TH graders who are our school winners for the Reflections contest:
    • Lucy Armijo (entries for both literature and music) & Kaylee Matthews (music)
    • We are proud of their efforts and have forwarded their submissions on to the county contest!

    Grades & Missing Work

    • This past week, 96% of our students logged in to CANVAS – way to go!
    • Now let’s make our WORK SUBMISSION rates just as high!  😊

    • Mustangs:  Remember to keep up with daily class videos and the corresponding assignments each day so you don’t get behind – and always attend every live class, or at least as many as possible!  It makes your schoolwork so much easier!
    • Mustangs:  Also, if you have any missing assignments, please turn those in as soon as possible.  The end of the quarter is technically January 15th but teachers are being as generous as possible and must have time to grade and enter assignments in order for you to receive credit on late work.  Since we won’t be able to extend deadlines this quarter, we need all students to try to have all missing work in before the break which starts December 22nd.   Please do your very best to meet this deadline.
    • Parents and students, if confused about a grade or credit for an assignment, please use PowerSchool (not Canvas) as the source to check final grades, credit, or submission status.

    3. In planning for the rest of the year, we are making every effort to make as few changes as possible for the sake of our students.      2- INTERIMS

Today marks the interim date, halfway point, of our second quarter!

HOW DO I VIEW MY CHILD’S GRADES?

1-  Please CLICK ON THIS LINK which explains step-by-step instructions for LOGGING IN to view your child’s grades.  OR

2-  Click on the Remote Learning button on our website for the same instructions. OR

2-  Reach out to your child’s teacher(s) regarding your child’s grades or work through email, Canvas, the Remind app, or by phone.

3- DAILY ATTENDANCE & CANVAS WORK SUBMISSIONS

We know that remote learning is just hard on everyone!  And we wish it weren’t.  We wish so many things were different right now and that we could help monitor our kiddos differently but, unfortunately, there are many limitations on so many of the tasks that we all do (from parent to student to teacher to support staff) each and every day.  One example is how we monitor attendance.  Another is how to ensure that true learner engagement is really possible for all of our students.

In short, here are JUST A FEW THINGS that TRULY MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN YOUR CHILD’S REMOTE LEARNING SUCCESS.  Have a discussion with them and ask them these questions to see if they are on the right track.  😊 Reach out to us if you need us – we are happy to help support your efforts!   336.545.2000

1-  Attendance:                  Are you logging in to Canvas every single day and clicking on the Attendance button?

This button helps monitor your child’s attendance even when they haven’t yet submitted their work.

2-  Understanding:            Are you logging in to Canvas every single day and watching all LIVE lessons, including 4 Core & 2 Encore, as much as possible?

“Online/remote” classes are only 30 minutes instead of the 60-90 minutes face-to-face classes.

Most of our students do SIGNIFICANTLY better if they attend the LIVE remote classes while they are occurring each day.

3-  On Pace:                         Are you logging in to Canvas every single day and watching ALL of the lessons you weren’t able to watch LIVE?

If a student cannot attend LIVE remote class, they do SIGNIFICANTLY better if they watch the lesson instead only completing the work.

4-  Submissions:                 Are you submitting work each week when it is due?

It is very easy for assignments to “snowball” and feel like it is too much unless keeping up with them daily.

    4- PARTNERSHIP FOOD DRIVE

    1. WHEN:  December 5 & 6 AND December 12 & 13
    2. WHERE:  Drive-by drop off at Mendenhall Middle School
    3. WHAT IS NEEDED:  spaghetti noodles, 1 lb. bags of rice, peanut butter, jelly (in plastic jars),

Face-to-Face Return Date & Remote Learners

    • Face-to-Face Instruction at Mendenhall:

On Nov. 10, the School Board approved a plan for a phased-in reopening.

      • It was decided that face-to-face instruction for middle schoolers will resume in January.
      • 6th graders will return on Thursday, January 7.
      • 7th and 8th graders will return on Monday, January 11.
    • Remote Instruction at Mendenhall:
      • As noted before, Mendenhall is also a remote learning site.  Due to the amount of requests from our families, this means that students will not need to transfer to the Virtual Academy when we return face-to-face but will be able to continue learning remotely with Mendenhall staff.
      • If you have signed up for remote learning at Mendenhall, we have your information and will provide schedules for all students in January.  Times of classes will likely change due to staff providing a hybrid program at Mendenhall – both remote instruction and face-to-face instruction.   We will let you know as we have updates!

    • School buildings in the worst condition will be addressed first, with some adjustments for school construction phasing and swing space to temporarily house students during renovations. The district also plans to purchase land county-wide for new schools.

No Live Classes, Make Up Work , & Important Interim Testing This Week!:

    • INTERIM TESTS:
      • Students in all grades will take Interim Tests this week:  Math, Reading, 8th grade Science.
      • These tests will help us determine what your child has learned and will inform teachers about what needs to be retaught as they move forward.
      • The Interim Tests can feel challenging and lengthy for many students so in order for everyone to do their best, we never recommend more than 1 per day.  If your child gets behind on the schedule, please have them make up an Interim Test on Friday or over the weekend instead of taking more than one Interim Test in a day.
      • Please help ensure that your child takes their tests in the BEST CONDITIONS possible. 😊
      • Schedule:

      • There will be no live classes in order to concentrate on one Interim Test daily.
      • Please have your child concentrate on the schedule, doing their best on each Interim Test, and making up any missing work in order to improve missing grades.

    • MISSING WORK/FAILING GRADES - GRACE PERIOD UNTIL THURSDAY, OCT.  22:
      • Please ask your child to “show” their PowerSchool grades to you (not Canvas).
      • Teachers have worked together to graciously extend grading through Thur. Oct. 22!

    • HOW IS MY CHILD MISSING WORK / ASSIGNMENTS SOMETIMES?
      • WHAT TO DO  à
        • Students MUST ENTER EVERY class BOX in Canvas, EACH DAY, & click on the MONTH, the WEEK, and look at the DAILY AGENDA.
        • Student should attend the LIVE SESSION – this can make all the difference for many!
        • Students should look at what is assigned for the day in the daily Agenda box (only accessible by following above instructions).
        • Students should look at what is due for the day – sometimes different from than what is assigned (only accessible by following above instructions).

      • WHAT NOT TO DO  à
    • Students are clicking on the “to do list” of assignments that Canvas generates without going INTO EACH CANVAS CLASS BOX each and every day.
    • Students are changing their “view of assignments” to “list view” which won’t list all assignments on the Agenda the way the Teachers have assigned them.
    • Unfortunately, teachers/admin can’t override these “misleading” Canvas features – but will continue to try to coach students to go into class the right way daily.  😊

The survey is for families who may choose remote learning while REMAINING a Mendenhall student AND ALSO any family who wants their child to return to the building setting.  The survey is not a final decision – this is only an “interest survey” for the county to plan staffing and programming.   It will help MENDENHALL greatly if we increase our PARTICIPATION!

      • Please note:  The survey is not binding.   At this point, you are NOT “signing up” for remote learning as a permanent decision.  Please take the survey (whether you want remote or in-person learning) as this is a way for GCS to make informed decisions about our specific staff and programming

Before taking the very brief survey, let me also tell you a little about our school day that we are planning:

A FEW quick facts about what school will look like at Mendenhall:

    • The school day will be from 8:35 am to 3:25 pm.
    • 6th graders will begin returning on Oct. 20th and 7th and 8th graders will begin returning on Oct. 26th
    • Students will attend school 2 days per week – either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday, with all students remote on Wednesdays.
    • Schedules are being worked on now and every effort is being made to not disrupt any student’s schedule or team.
    • At MMS, students will be set up in cohorts, all-day core groups like in elementary school, and will switch classes one time per day for Encore.
    • Teachers will move from core (Math, ELA, Sci, SS) classes and then bring students to their one Encore class per day.
    • Teachers will walk students to each Encore class to prevent large crowd mingling but this one change to Encore will be allowed daily.
    • Classes will be over an hour-long but none will exceed the 90-minute block often seen in middle schools.
    • Lunch will be eaten in the classroom with a teacher.
    • Students will be in classrooms that have been properly measured and set up according to social distancing guidelines.
    • Classroom capacities may range in our school from 12 students in a room to 24 students in a much larger room – always dependent upon guidelines and measurements.
    • Students will not ever perform heavy-duty cleaning or use chemicals but will use wipes to wipe down their personal area/desk, will have hand sanitizer readily available in all rooms, will have soap, water, and towels available in bathrooms.
    • Arrival procedures will be incorporated into the day that involves taking students’ temperatures and collecting attestation forms.

    • We need ALL FAMILIES to take the PARENT PREFERENCE SURVEY

      • If you have an interest in your child STAYING at Mendenhall but learning REMOTELY even when students return to the school, it is crucial that you fill out the survey as soon as possible but no later than noon on Friday, October 2nd.  Here’s the link:   Parent Preference Form   Thank you so much!

      • Even if you want your child to return to school on the approved plan of 2 days per week, WE NEED YOU TOO!  It will help us so much if you would also complete the Parent Preference Survey.   Here’s the link:   Parent Preference Form      Thank you so much for your help!

      • IMPORTANT:   The survey is not binding!   At this point, you are NOT “signing up” for remote learning as a permanent decision.
      • IMPORTANT:   Please take the survey (whether you want remote or in-person learning) as this is a way for GCS to make informed decisions.

TRANSPORTATION FORM for ALL MENDENHALL STUDENTS

      • All parents of returning MMS students, please fill out the Transportation Preference Form (whether you plan to use a bus/not use a bus for transportation), no later than Thursday, Oct. 1. by 5 pm. If you are able, please consider alternate ways to transport your child to school.   😊
      • This form is found under our Quick Links at the bottom of our website or click here.

     VIRTUAL ACADEMY NEW DEADLINE

    • Remember, this means you do not want either of the above-listed options of:

1- the “potential” remote learning at Mendenhall with Mendenhall teachers (what is noted in the survey) or

2- the return to Mendenhall on the 2 days per week model

And you are choosing to transfer to a different school.

      Virtual Academy Timeline Update

    • Any parents who requested a transfer from their home school to either of the virtual schools via SchoolMint after the school board meeting on Thursday, September 24, GCS will keep requests on file but will not process any transfers in PowerSchool until October 20, when health metrics will allow GCS to know more about the return of face-to-face instruction in schools. If health metrics are not met on October 20, all students who are not already currently enrolled in the virtual schools prior to Thursday, Sept. 24, would then remain in remote learning. We will keep you updated.

     Thank you for your support!

    September 28, 2020

    Dear parents and families,

This is Kris Vecchione, the proud principal of Mendenhall!  As we prepare to bring students back to our classrooms for in-person learning, GCS wants to make sure that your plans and preferences are understood, recognizing that these might have changed during the past two months.

ALL MENDENHALL FAMILIES WHO PREFER REMOTE LEARNING  BUT STAYING WITH THE MENDENHALL  (BRAND NEW update)

    • GCS has heard the requests from some parents who might prefer to continue remote learning but do not want to register for one of the district’s new virtual schools.  Filling out the preference form (see below) will help GCS better plan for re-opening and determine if there is the appropriate staffing to operate a remote learning option at individual schools.  Please submit a form by each of your elementary and/or middle school children, either electronically or via paper/hard copy, no later than noon on Friday, October 2nd.
    • This option is different from Virtual Academy – the V.A. is for students who transfer to a different online school.  If you are interested in the remote learning option at Mendenhall, your child would continue learning in a similar format as they are doing now, with MMS staff.
    • Here’s the link:   Parent Preference Form

ALL RETURNING MENDENHALL STUDENTS MUST FILL OUT TRANSPORTATION FORM

    • All parents of returning MMS students, please fill out the Transportation Preference Form (whether you plan to use a bus/not use a bus for transportation), no later than Thursday, Oct. 1. by 5 pm.
    • This form is found under our Quick Links at the bottom of our website or click here.
    • If you are able, please consider alternate ways to transport your child to school.   😊

This important update also came late last night:

    • Any parents who requested a transfer from their home school to either of the virtual schools via SchoolMint after the school board meeting on Thursday, September 24, GCS will keep requests on file but will not process any transfers in PowerSchool until October 20, when health metrics will allow GCS to know more about the return of face-to-face instruction in schools. If health metrics are not met on October 20, all students who are not already currently enrolled in the virtual schools prior to Thursday, Sept. 24, would then remain in remote learning. We will keep you updated.

    VIRTUAL ACADEMY NEW DEADLINE

    • If you are interested in transferring out of Mendenhall to a completely virtual school, instead of returning to Mendenhall on the 2 days per week hybrid model, you will need to register for the Virtual Academy (different school) by Friday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m.  Click here or visit: gcsnc.schoolmint.net.  (This is a NEW deadline since yesterday’s message.)    Please also read the FIRST message carefully as there is now another possible remote learning option being considered for each school.

    Week of 09.28.20

SCHOOL DAYS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

    • Last week, the board of education voted on a plan to return students to the classroom in phases. Middle school students will attend two days per week, either on Monday and Tuesday or on Thursday and Friday, with Wednesday as a remote learning day for all.

DATES OF RETURN & SCHOOL DAY TIMES

    • Sixth graders will return on Oct. 20, and seventh and eighth graders will return on Oct. 26.
    • We are working on scheduling now and will have that information for you in the coming weeks.
    • The official middle school day will be from 8:35 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.

VIRTUAL LEARNING OPTIONS & MMS HYBRID MODEL

    • If you are interested in transferring out of Mendenhall to a completely virtual school, instead of returning to Mendenhall on the 2 days per week hybrid model, you will need to register for the Virtual Academy (different school) by Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. on gcsnc.schoolmint.net.
    • However, this update came late last night:  Any parents who requested a transfer from their home school to either of the virtual schools via SchoolMint after the school board meeting on Thursday, September 24, GCS will keep requests on file but will not process any transfers in PowerSchool until October 20, when health metrics will allow us to know more about the return of face-to-face instruction in schools. If health metrics are not met on October 20, all students who are not currently enrolled in the virtual schools would then remain in remote learning. We will keep you updated.

ALL RETURNING MENDENHALL STUDENTS MUST FILL OUT TRANSPORTATION FORM

    • To assess the need for transportation, GCS is asking that ALL parents fill out a transportation preference form by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, indicating whether or not you need transportation.
    • TRANSPORTATION FORM FOR ALL STUDENTS:  This form is found under Quick Links at the bottom of the MENDENHALL WEBPAGE (ß or click here).
    • If you are able, please consider alternate ways to transport your child to school.   😊

    SCHOOL DAY AT MMS

    • Middle school scheduling is already incredibly complex.  There are many factors that affect both the master schedule and individual student schedules that don’t affect other levels of schooling in the same way.
    • However, we will work diligently to ensure that our schedules honor safety guidelines for our students and staff, abide by classroom capacities, follow the curriculum and instructional needs of our students, and much more!
    • In the coming days, we will update you but I wanted to let you know now that our students will be set up in cohorts – meaning groups that are similar to elementary classrooms – with the teacher teams switching to teach their curriculum instead of students changing classrooms or mixing with other groups.
    • Additionally, at this point, it looks like there will only be one elongated offering of Encore per day for each student, also limiting the mixing of groups.  It may be very similar to what we have in place now in order for students to take all of their Encore classes in a more concentrated format.  More on this to come!

    REOPENING DOCUMENTS

    • You can also check out www.gcsnc.com/reopening on our main Guilford County website for additional “reopening documents” that are being updated on a regular basis.
    • We look forward to having your child back in the building!

     INTERIMS

    • Mendenhall Middle School will have interim grades ready for parents to view in PowerSchool on Tuesday, September 29th.
    • If you have any questions regarding your child’s grades or work, teachers are happy to answer questions.  Please reach out to your child’s teachers through email, Canvas, the Remind app, or by phone.  We want to help support you and your child’s learning!

    Student Work Each Day:

MMS is committed to limiting unnecessary screen time for students while striving to provide consistent instructional support outlined in GCS’ Guidelines.

    • MMS follows the GCS Guidelines in our Master Remote Learning Schedule:
      • This equals 30 minutes for each Core class
      • This equals 30 minutes for each Encore class (students attend 2 per day)
      • This equals 30 minutes for each ELA and Math class
      • This equals 15 minutes for all other classes (Core and Encore classes)
      • 3 hours of Synchronous Instruction (Teaching / Class Time) per day
      • 2 hours of Asynchronous Instruction (Independent Work Time) per day

    • What does this look like EACH DAY?  Like our Remote Learning Schedule.   😊

Broken down into a daily middle school schedule, this is what our students should receive:

      • 30 minutes daily of Teacher-Directed Instruction
        • Occurs in each class daily (M-TH) – both Core and Encore classes
        • Teacher is live each day but part of the lesson may be pre-recorded
        • Lesson is recorded and posted daily (please contact the teacher or call the school if you have trouble accessing recorded lessons)
        • This may be called “Synchronous Instruction” as it can occur together
        • Schedule is according to posted schedule on the website, Canvas, & messages
      • 30 minutes daily of Independent Work / Instruction for Math & ELA classes
      • 15 minutes daily of Independent Work / Instruction for all other classes
        • This may be called “Asynchronous Instruction” as it occurs independently

    August 31, 2020

This week looks just like last week with live instruction beginning next week, Tuesday, Sept. 8.  See last week’s message (Aug. 23rd) below if you need easy reference to the schedules

    Academic Updates:

Core classes, which are Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies, are attended daily and will remain the same times for all nine weeks, while Encore classes have a special schedule this week and then change to a different schedule for weeks 4-9.   Because teachers are not live this week, students can log in and complete assignments at times of their choice but starting next week, Sept. 8, if students want to attend live instruction or interact with their teacher, they will need to be in class at the times noted on the schedule given in the Remote Learning Document posted in the follow-up email and on our website under Remote Learning.  Due to multiple reasons, this schedule is different than times noted in PowerSchool.

    Materials Pick Up:

Parents, please drive through our bus parking lot between 9 am – 3 pm on Wednesday, September 2, and pick up books for your student’s remote learning. If you cannot make the drive through time on Wednesday, no worries!  You may drop by our front office any time after Wednesday for pick up.

    Spirit Wear:

The Athletic Booster Club is excited to announce a new website for online Mendenhall Spirit wear purchases.  We want to encourage our students and parents to help boost our school spirit and the feeling of togetherness while we’re apart!  The online store will be open for purchases from Sept. 1 – Sept. 15 and will offer order pick up in the front office the following week.  We will notify you when your order is ready for pickup.  Please go to our website and click the link on our scrolling pictures or access the link in the follow-up email:  https://mendenhall-middle-school-athletic-booster-club.square.site

    Instructional Expectations for our Mustangs

Accessing Schedules on PowerSchool, Courses on Canvas, & Times of Classes

On Friday, Aug. 21, the MMS Advisory Course in Canvas walked students through the process of finding and following their schedule in PowerSchool.  Detailed log in info is on the last page of this document but students find their schedules by clicking on PowerStudent instead of Canvas when logging into my.NCEdCloud.org.  All courses will be present on Canvas when students log in on Monday, Aug. 24.  Please refer to your child’s schedule and plan to have them logged in at the beginning of each class period for maximum engagement Weeks 4-9.  Class Schedules are posted in each student’s PowerSchool but TIMES students attend classes are outlined in the “Daily Class Period Schedules,” seen on this document & our website under both Connect Ed & Remote Learning sections.

    Meet Each Teacher

On Monday, Aug. 24, teachers will hold Orientations for each class, sharing expectations for remote learning, exploring canvas, and explaining how to access both daily lessons and recorded lessons, in the event of an absence.  Due to county-wide security and privacy concerns expressed with some “live platforms,” teachers will be “live on computer” at Orientations but participants won’t see one another.  Some schools are still using these platforms but we, along with GCS, are exploring more safe & reliable “live interactions” and plan to have these safeguards in place when beginning daily ‘live interactions’ in each class period on Week 4, Sept. 8.

    Core & Encore Canvas Instruction (Weeks 2 & 3)

During Weeks 2-3 (Aug. 24-Sep. 4), students will attend class Orientations and work in Core & Encore instructional Canvas courses.  Just like Week 1, there are assignments to complete even though most classes will contain pre-recorded content according to the GCS timeline.  Although we are gradually increasing expectations, assignments are tied to each Core & Encore class.  Weeks 2-3 will help provide stability and consistency so students may acclimate to schedules and become accustomed to logging in to each course daily.

Core & Encore Canvas Instruction (Weeks 4-9)

During Weeks 4-9, teachers will be live in each course every day, providing in-class support along with office hours at other parts of the day.  Office hours for teachers are posted in the Weeks 4-9 Student Schedule.  Teachers may pre-record parts of their daily lessons in order to avoid potential technical problems and potential background interference.  However, during Weeks 4-9, the teacher will be ‘live’ in each period, each day, on their computer, engaging with and providing support for students during class time.

    Core Schedule for Weeks 2-9

Core Schedule times, as shown below, will begin Monday, Aug. 24, and will remain consistent while students are learning from home.

Encore Schedule for Weeks 2-3 & Weeks 4-9

Encore Schedule TIMES of classes will be consistent, but DAYS will be different from Weeks 2-3 & Weeks 4-9.  Please see the info below.

Important:  While students are attending virtual classes, they will have a simpler Encore schedule to follow and will not switch back and forth each day between A/B classes.   Students will find their specific Encore CLASSES on their schedule in PowerSchool, then find the TIMES of classes on the “Daily Class Period Schedules” below, and the DAYS they will meet for A/B day classes are explained in the info below.  If students accidentally attend the wrong class, Encore teachers will help students understand which one they should attend.

ENCORE SCHEDULE Weeks 2-3 (Aug. 24-Sept. 4) ONLY:

    • Only during the first two weeks, students will go to A day on Monday and Wednesday & B day on Tuesday and Thursday.
    • Teachers will be live with their A day class on Monday, Aug. 24th and B day class on Tuesday, Aug. 25th.

    ENCORE SCHEDULE after Weeks 2-3:

    • Students in ESL and in Music Dept. will attend ESL, Band, Orchestra, or Chorus classes every day for the whole quarter.
    • Students in Art, PE, Spanish, or one of the 3 CTE classes (Ms. Ivey, Ms. Wiggins, & Ms. Shaw) will follow this schedule:
      • Weeks 4-6 (Sept. 8-25): Students will follow A day schedule every day and will NOT go to B day classes.
      • Weeks 7-9 (Sept. 28-Oct. 16): Students will follow B day schedule every day and will NOT go to their A day classes.

    Daily Class Period Schedule

    Weeks 2 & 3:  Aug. 24–Sept. 4

*This schedule (times classes are held) will remain consistent but Teacher Office Hours will be included to Weeks 4-9 (see next page).

ENCORE SCHEDULE Weeks 2-3 (Aug. 24-Sept. 4) ONLY:

    • Only during the first two weeks, students will go to A day on Monday and Wednesday & B day on Tuesday and Thursday.
    • Teachers will be live with their A day class on Aug. 24th and B day class on Aug. 25th.

    August 21, 2020

Hello Mustang Families!  This is Kris Vecchione, Principal of Mendenhall, calling with the latest updates.

What a week with all of the technology glitches across the state!  I am so proud of our students for all they have accomplished this week!   Starting Monday, Aug. 24, we will start a new schedule.  Here are some of the details.  You can also look at the ConnectEd email message that will come after this call or go to our website by clicking here for the full document in the MMS Principal’s Messages or Remote Learning website pages.

Accessing Schedules on PowerSchool & Classes on Canvas

On Friday, Aug. 21, the MMS Advisory Course walks students through the process of finding their schedule in PowerSchool and following their schedule.  Login info on the last page of this document.  All courses will be present on Canvas when students log in on Monday, Aug. 24.  Please refer to your child’s schedule and plan to have them logged in at the beginning of each class time for maximum engagement.  Times for students to log in to classes will be different than times noted in PowerSchool.  Please use the times on the schedules seen below.

    Meet Each Teacher

On Monday, Aug. 24, your child will have the opportunity to meet their teachers in each class period.  Teachers will share expectations for remote learning, explore canvas, and model how to access both daily lessons and recorded lessons, in the event of an absence.

    Core & Encore Canvas Instruction (Weeks 2 & 3)

During Weeks 2-3 (Aug. 24-Sep. 4), students will work mainly in Core & Encore instructional Canvas courses.  Just like Week 1, there are assignments to complete even though most classes will contain pre-recorded content according to the GCS timeline.  Although we are still gradually increasing the expectations, assignments are tied to each Core or Encore class.  Weeks 2-3 will help provide stability and consistency so students may acclimate to their schedules and become accustomed to logging in to each course daily.

However, the teacher will be ‘live’ in each period, each day, on their computer, engaging with and providing support for students during class time.

    Core Schedule for Weeks 2-9

Core Schedule times, as shown below, will begin Monday, Aug. 24, and will remain the same while students are learning from home.

Encore Schedule for Weeks 2-3 & Weeks 4-9

Please the important information below regarding Encore Schedules.   See all times for classes outlined in the schedules below.

Important:  While our students are attending virtual classes, they will have a simpler Encore schedule to follow and will not switch back and forth each day between A/B classes.   Students will first find their specific Encore classes on their schedule in PowerSchool.  Students will meet in classes according to the schedules shown below.  If a student accidentally attends the wrong class, Encore teachers will help students understand which one they should attend.

Students in the Music Department will attend Band, Orchestra, and Chorus classes every day for the whole quarter.

Students in Art, PE, Spanish, ESL, or one of the 3 CTE classes (taught by Ms. Ivey, Ms. Wiggins, and Ms. Shaw) will see their classes listed as A day/B day alternating classes schedules on their PowerSchool Schedule.  However, students who are scheduled in one of these classes will follow the schedule below:

    Weeks 2-3 (August 24-September 4):

    • Only during the first two weeks, students will go to A day on Monday and Wednesday and B day on Tuesday and Thursday.
    • Teachers will be live with their A day class on Monday, Aug. 24th and B day class on Aug. 25th.  Friday will be a flex day.

    Weeks 4-6 (September 8-25):

    • Students will follow their A day schedule every day.  They will NOT go to their B day classes.

    Weeks 7-9 (September 28-October 16):

    • Students will follow their B day schedule every day.  They will NOT go their A day classes.

  • August 16, 2020

Good afternoon Mustang Families!  This is Kris Vecchione, Principal of Mendenhall, calling with the latest updates.

I have also included Friday's message below this email just in case you need to reference how to start Remote Learning at Mendenhall on Monday, Aug. 17th.

    SchoolMint Email:

    • You should have received an email from Guilford County Schools/SchoolMint Program in the past 2 days asking for you to fill out an Opening School Year Packet, along with instructions on how to complete this process - due by Sept. 8.
    • SchoolMint is the Program used now by GCS for enrollment OR for parents to (more easily) update their child’s information.
    • If you already have a SchoolMint account, you should be able to see the green YEAR OPENING button under your child's name when you sign in to SchoolMint.
    • If you have not yet created a SchoolMint account, please refer to the email you received with instructions on how to complete this process.

    Password Reset:

    • All of our newly reset passwords were kicked out of the PowerSchool system temporarily BUT have been restored to the new password:  Mustangs2021
    • If your child tried logging into Canvas within the last 24 hours, they may have been blocked or may have been able to use last year’s password.
    • All has been repaired now so please use the NEW PASSWORD!  😊
    • Please remember that schedules are not accurate due to staffing changes & we are working very hard to revise them this week.  We will let you know when they are ready!

PowerSchool Schedule, Canvas, & Access to Courses:

    • The MMS Advisory Course will be accessible on Monday, August 17th.
    • At this point you may not be able to see the MMS Advisory Course.
    • Even if you see other courses prior to Monday, please note that this may have occurred due to a system override and the additional courses shown may not be accurate while schedules are changing.
    • This happens because students are automatically placed by the PowerSchool program in Canvas courses that coincide with their present schedule in PowerSchool.  Since we are having to rework schedules, due to the staffing changes we have noted before, our Canvas courses are also affected.

    First Week:

    • For the first week, students will only log in to ONE COURSE IN CANVAS THE FIRST WEEK:   “MMS ADVISORY”
    • ALL Information, Orientations, and Coursework that students need to access for the first week will be found in:  “MMS ADVISORY.”
    • Please check this site daily for updates and any additional instructions or assignments.
    • There will be a gradual progression of assignments, expectations, and live interactions over the first three weeks with teachers going “live with instruction” on week 4 as outlined according to GCS timeline.
    • The first week is crucial for generally orienting our students and ensuring that all students are logged in properly, showing up online, and are “getting the hang of” simple remote learning processes.
    • During this first week, our teachers will also reach out to your family, making personal connections by phone, email, or online.  They will also ensure that we have all of the most up-to-date contact information.

We can’t tell you how much we appreciate your understanding and patience during this time!  I am so proud of our Mustang community and honored that you are trusting us with your child’s education.  We will continue to update you with changes as soon as we can and greatly appreciate your support during this time!

Good afternoon Mustang Families!  This is Kris Vecchione, Principal of Mendenhall calling with the latest updates about how to start Remote Learning at Mendenhall on Monday, Aug. 17th.

We know that the start of the year may feel less steady than any other years in the past.  This is the case for us too.  However, we want to let you know that we will always have your child’s best interest in mind and we will work through this together.  Team Mendenhall, we know it is easier said than done but please don’t worry!  We will update you with changes as soon as we can and greatly appreciate your understanding!

     Schedule Update:

    • Your child will not need a schedule for the first week of school.  😊  For the first week your child will attend orientations and complete other coursework housed in ONE CENTRAL CANVAS COURSE.
    • Due to enrollment shifts and staffing changes occurring in every middle school across the whole county over the past few days, student schedules will change this coming week.
    • If you log in to NCEdCloud today, you will see a schedule but please note that this schedule is the one that is likely to change due to our shifts in enrollment and staffing.
    • Yes, all previously considered factors will still remain in place to create new schedules such as Encore class preferences, math course levels, etc.

    Timeline to Receive New Schedule:

    • We will let our students & parents know when new schedules are finalized.
    • We have all hands on deck working both remotely and onsite today, throughout this weekend, and into next week to expedite this process as quickly as possible so that our students will have ACCURATE SCHEDULES with the staff we now have at Mendenhall.
    • To give a context, it normally takes the entire summer to schedule our students, ensuring they are placed in the correct Core and Encore classes, ensuring that our classes are balanced, diverse, and cohesive.

    First Day & First Week:

    • Students will only log in to ONE COURSE IN CANVAS THE FIRST WEEK:   MMS ADVISORY
    • ALL Information, Orientations, and Coursework that students need to access for the first week will be found in:  MMS ADVISORY.”

SCHEDULES:  Typically, we mail schedules home the week before school begins.  However, as you know, this is not a typical year!  Due to multiple options for enrollment this year, schedules may continue to change throughout this week.  Later this week we will communicate how you will be able to log in and access your child’s schedule and other important documents.  We want to get this right and not cause unnecessary confusion with changes in schedules – we appreciate your patience!

ORIENTATION:  Mendenhall will hold TOWN HALL ORIENTATION SESSIONS hosted by Grade Levels & Encore Staff on August 17.  We will continue to update you this week with specific details regarding times for each grade level’s session and how to log in.  The sessions will also be recorded for all to accommodate varying schedules.

SUPPLIES:   In terms of supplies, we are not asking for students to have specific supplies while working remotely but do encourage families to think about setting up a workstation to help students focus while they are “in school” so they have a way to organize themselves.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:  The GCS Academic Department has provided us with templates and schedules that our staff will personalize this week during workdays, according to their own team’s schedules.  We will notify you this week as decisions are made and daily schedules are posted on our website.

NEED A LAPTOP:   Great news!  Eventually, we will be a 1:1 district with all students receiving devices.  However, these devices aren’t available at this time.  In the meantime, there are some laptops in the district that can be shared within families.  If you do not already have a device checked out from the district (1 per family at this point) and need a device, please visit our website to sign up.  The signup page is one of the large scrolling pictures at the top.

ENROLLED IN VIRTUAL ACADEMY BY ACCIDENT? If you have enrolled your child in the Virtual Academy accidentally, we need your help urgently!  It isn’t too late to re-enroll your child back at Mendenhall Middle School.  To un-enroll you must e-mail the Student Assignment Office at studentassignment@gcsnc.com and also vecchik@gcsnc.com if you would like for us to follow up with the Student Assignment Office to ensure your request is processed.  Remember that you don’t need to enroll in any online learning if you are a Mendenhall student.   Today, according to all emails received from parents, we followed up on any students not yet back in our system.

I am so honored to be the principal of Mendenhall Middle School and look forward to this year despite all of its unusual challenges!  Please know we are here for you and your family and will continue to update you throughout this week.

  • August 6, 2020

    Good evening, Mustang Family!

This is Principal Vecchione with some important updates for our Mustang community.  Welcome back to our new school year!

Throughout the next few days, you will begin to receive multiple messages regarding updates and new information that I would like to share with you as information has now formalized for us regarding Open House orientation sessions, remote learning, technology needs, and more!  Some of you have registered your Middle School Virtual Academy for the 2020-21 school year.    Here some facts that you may be unaware of regarding the virtual versus remote learning processes.

WHERE IS MY CHILD ENROLLED?   The Virtual Academy is housed at Jackson Middle School.  This means that your child will be unenrolled from Mendenhall Middle School and enrolled at Jackson where they will have different staff, administration, and student body.

COMMITMENT:   Once the school year begins you will not be able to transfer your child back to Mendenhall until the end of the 1st semester or at the end of the 2020-21 school year.

ENROLLED BY ACCIDENT?    If you have enrolled your child in the Virtual Academy accidentally, we need your help urgently!  It isn’t too late to re-enroll your child back at Mendenhall Middle School.  We have just been notified that our staff/teacher allotments at Mendenhall will be adjusted on Monday, August 10 according to our enrollment.  For this reason, we are asking for your help and support!   We are gently asking that you please help us by un-enrolling tonight or tomorrow if you have made a mistake and didn't intend on enrolling.

HOW TO UNENROLL:    To un-enroll you must e-mail the Student Assignment Office at studentassignment@gcsnc.com and vecchik@gcsnc.com so we can help follow up with the Student Assignment Office to ensure your request is processed.

MMS STUDENTS DON'T NEED TO REGISTER?  All students enrolled at Mendenhall are already automatically registered in remote learning - you do NOT need to enroll in any online learning.  If you have enrolled in online learning, but want your child to be in the Mendenhall online learning, then you have accidentally enrolled in the Virtual Academy and your child will be transferred to Jackson Middle.

REMOTE LEARNING:   As of right now, all students in GCS will be working remotely for the entire 1st 9 weeks of school.  This means that you will have current Mendenhall administration, teachers, and counselors available to assist you while working from the comfort of your own home.

    TOUGH DECISION:

I just want to take this time to say that you and your child are extremely important to the Mustang family and we don’t want to see even one child leave the herd!  Our student population affects our staff allotment which means that we could possibly lose some of our great teachers here at Mendenhall Middle School.  I understand that this is a confusing and difficult time for everyone so I just wanted to provide you with some clarification.  At the end of the day, I know that you will make the best decision for you and your family based on your specific needs.  If you have enrolled in the virtual academy intentionally and want to move forward with this decision, we understand and support your family - please know we will miss you all very much!  If you are still undecided, the deadline to enroll for the Virtual Academy is September 15th.  However, if you have made the decision accidentally, we also wanted to make sure you were fully informed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 336-545-2000.

Thank you so much for your help and support!
