Welcome to Ms. Pickett's Class Webpage

  • Our main goal in first grade is to encourage children to become responsible, caring citizens who are lifelong learners. All students are challenged to reach their potential through shared learning, guided practice, building independence and cooperative learning activities, as well as, various service learning opportunities throughout the year.  Together, we hope that we can instill the quality of caring for those less fortunate and help our students become well-rounded Sternberger World Changers.

As teachers in a constantly changing environment, we plan our first grade year based on the Common Core Standards set forth by Guilford County Schools and in compliance with the North Carolina Common Core Standards.

We implement Core Knowledge Language Arts as our literacy program that requires a block of time dedicated to teaching guided reading daily on each student's instructional level. We accomplish this by grouping the students, based on their reading achievement level and providing direct instruction to a homogeneous group of students. Other components of CKLA include shared reading, independent reading, self-selected reading, phonics, speaking and listening, and teacher read aloud.

To encourage students to become writers, we implement Writer's Workshop along with our dedication to integrate writing into our weekly thematic studies that are based on the first grade standards for social studies and science.

In math, we use Eureka Math to strive to teach the standards for first grade through hands-on problem solving with the use of many manipulatives and activities to help make the problem solving as concrete as possible.

The science and social studies goals are met through deliberate care to weave meaningful units throughout the weeks and months of the school year to tie what we are learning in school to the students' lives outside of school.

Our door is always open to visitors and volunteers who are willing to help us become the best that we can be. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you would like to lend a hand and share in our discovery of life through the eyes of a first grader. We will be glad to celebrate our successes and share our continuous evolution through this journey ahead.
