• Clara J. Peck Elementary School History

Clara J. Peck Elementary School was established in 1929. The school was named for Clara Jane Thorton Peck, Greensboro's first public health nurse. The main building which was erected on 37 acres donated to the city for educational use, is one of the oldest in the Guilford County School System. There have been many additions to the main building over the years. Additional classrooms and the cafeteria were built in 1949, with a separate three-classroom building following in 1951, a media center and modernized administrative offices were added in 1983 and in 1984 a four-classroom wing was added. In the fall of 1998, a paved circular drive was added at the main entrance to the building from Florida Street. In the summer of 1999 central heating and air-conditioning were a welcome addition to Peck. The summer of 2006, the classroom space at Peck was expanded by eight rooms, known as the Yarborough Annex. The cafeteria was enlarged to house two hundred children. The Pre-K lab was renovated to a double sized classroom and the entire hall was upgraded to 2006 standards. In addition, Peck has six learning cottages.

The school now serves approximately 300 students in grades Pre-K through Fifth. Our students benefit from our diverse population. We have approximately 9 countries represented in our student membership. Students profit from our many educational programs. Student accomplishments are recognized through our PBIS, Honor Roll, and Perfect Attendance.

Our primary goal at Peck is to instill a love for learning in our students. When our students graduate from Peck, we wish for them to have college firmly in their sight. To that avail, we have partnered with the University of North Carolina through the Carolina Covenant. As a pilot program, our fifth grade students will be tracked through middle school and high school and upon meeting the entry requirements will receive a full four-year scholarship to the University.
