Hello! My name is Gena Pagano. This is my 8th year teaching PE and my 5th year at Simkins Elementary School. I am married with 2 awesome kids. My son, Carmine, is a senior at UNC Asheville where he plays baseball. My daughter, Kelcey, is a senior at SEHS where she is a cheerleader. I also coach cheerleading at SEMS. Staying fit and active is VERY important to me!!!
I LOVE our amazing school and all of the opportunities that our students have to succeed. I believe that Physical Education is so important for all aspects of our well-being. My goal is to create an atmosphere where all students can learn, succeed and most of all... have FUN! I feel that exercise is so important for all of us and if we create a love for movement at a young age, it will lead to healthier and more active lifestyles later on down the road.
Students can expect to work hard every time they enter the gym. It is so important to dress for success on PE days by wearing sneakers and comfortable clothing. We will be working on soccer skills, basketball, tennis, dance, gymnastics, bowling, golf, fitness, cooperative games and so much more this year. Our students may come home talking about "Pepper" the penguin and his friends... They are a HUGE part of our PE program and we all LOVE them! Showing good sportsmanship, teamwork, and being kind to others are very important to me.
We will be participating in The Kid's Heart Challenge (formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart) in the spring. We also have some great opportunities for students to be part of different clubs. Those who love jump rope can sign up for the half year "Jump Rope Prep", which is an after school club for students interested in trying out for the "FINtastic Turners" jump rope team. Our FINtastic Turners try outs will be in January and the team will perform at Field Day and may possibly have some other performance opportunities later this year. More information to come on both of these opportunities... We also have a unified buddy club called the Sharkbites that will be by teacher recommendation. Those who LOVE to run will be excited about our PACER club which takes place once per month before school and students must qualify for this based on their PACER assessment. Something new that will be offered this year in the spring will be a GO FAR running club. More information to come... :)
*FIELD DAY is set for WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17th rain or shine!!!* Please email me if you would like to volunteer to help.
Our motto in the gym is to "Work Hard, Dream BIG & make it a...WICKED AWESOME DAY!!!
