Morehead History

  • Morehead Elementary is an Elementary Expressive Arts Magnet school serving kindergarten through fifth grades in the Guilford County school system. The school is located at 4630 Tower Road, Greensboro, North Carolina. Morehead Elementary was named in honor of the 29th North Carolina Governor, John Motley Morehead who served from 1841-1845. He was a resident in Greensboro and a supporter of the public schools.

The school was originally constructed in 1968 to serve students in kindergarten through fifth grades as a regular public school. During the 1986 year Morehead only housed third through fifth grades. According to the Guilford County Magnet offices, in 1988-89 Guilford County school board approved Morehead to become a magnet for Foreign Language and Cultural Arts for grades three through five. The board proposed the magnet so it could help increase school enrollment and student diversity. The Morehead magnet program model was so effective that in 1999-2000 Guilford County decided to move the magnet model to Peeler Open Performing Arts magnet school. The county was going to remove the magnet status from Morehead; however, parents and teachers advocated for the magnet model to stay. As a result, in 2000-2001 Morehead remained a magnet but it changed its name to the Expressive Arts Magnet.

The following Arts programs are offered: Drama, Music, Strings, Dance, Art, and Physical Education. In addition, students in grades three through five have the opportunity to enroll in Arts Academy classes that occur beyond the normal school day including: Advance Drama, Drama Troupe, Strings, Chorus, Recorder Ensemble, Handbells, World Drumming, Dance Company, Tap 101, Dance for Theater, Art, Fitness & Fun, 5K (Go Out For a Run) & Sport Stacking.

Morehead has a diverse population. The community support is valued and encouraged.  Local colleges and universities send practicum and pre-service teachers, and the community/neighborhood volunteers serve as tutors, lunch buddies, and assistants in a reading program for English as Second Language students.

    Morehead School Song:

    Express Yourself

    By: Tamela Duncan

    Chorus:
Express yourself in the Morehead family
Express yourself. Come along, sing this song with me
    Building hopes, sharing dreams
It's the place we're all free to be
To express ourselves in this Morehead family.

    Verse:
We come with so many faces
We're children from so many places
Bring together a song, a dance, a scene
    Jumping up, shouting loud,
    Standing tall, we are proud
That we are in this Morehead family.

    Repeat Chorus
