Mr. Art Close

Master of Business Administration (MBA) - Xavier University, OH

Bachelor of Arts, Business Administration - St. Michael’s College, VT

APICS Member - 2017 Excellence in Leadership Award

37 years of business experience in Logistics, Regulatory Compliance, Business Operations, Engineering, Performance Analysis, Training and Education, Marketing and Finance.

I'm a former USAF B-52 pilot, aircrew commander, instructor pilot and test pilot. I also spent 11 years working for United Airlines where I headed the READI Group (a consortium of 121 airlines world-wide focused on aircraft reliability), I spent 5 years in construction trades and have more than 22 years experience teaching 25 different college and MBA graduate school courses at the University level. I've been teaching high school Marketing, Business and Logistics classes since the beginning of the 2006 school year.

I expect a lot from my students and I work hard to prepare them for college and the work place. I believe that finding a building a good career is the point of high school; so I teach my students how to think, solve problems and work with others. We focus as much on the soft skills (communication, ethics/human behavior, teamwork, time management and stress reduction, and counseling) as we do on the hard skills and academics. Employers want people who can work well with others and understand how to be an effective team member.

  • Welcome to Western Guilford High's Honors Logistics Program

Our Logistics Program focuses on teaching students about the fastest growing field in the business world. The demand for Logistics and Supply Chain experts is growing every year. We prepare our students to enter and excel in warehousing, supply chain and logistics.

Students learn how to drive a 5,395 pound forklift that can pick up a 2000 pound car more than 15 feet into the air. They also train on an $11,000 SIM Log forklift simulator (for those skills that can't be done in our facility due to size).

We partner with local area companies who hire our graduates into full-time jobs and part-time jobs while they are in school. This past year, 4 companies came to the school and interviewed our Logistics students and hired 5 of them into full-time positions. Companies have made large donations to our program because they strongly believe in what we are doing and need more well prepared employees in the future. Companies like Warehouse Design ($4,500 of state-of-the-art racking, Hanel ($30,000 RotoMat), Worldwide Material Handling (4 - 1,000 pound capacity rolling carts), Precision Fabrics Group ($600 liquid tote and 2,200 pounds of clean water for forklift practice), Rock Hill Technology (28 Versatotes) and a $800 dock board for the forklift to drive between the dock and a tractor trailer. In addition, Guilford County Schools' CTE department has purchased us a Big Joe V-15 electric forklift, a powerful Predator stretch wrap machine and a variety of equipment, tools and protective gear for the students.

Additionally, we work with the Greensboro Apprenticeship Partners (GAP) to build effective pipelines into well-paying careers and college. You can read and learn more about GAP by going to gapnc.org
