Welcome to Ms. Corans' Homepage (Dance)

  • Hello and welcome to Dance at Smith High School! My name is Samantha Coran and I am so excited to be teaching you Dance this year. While I know the school year is not looking like a typical school year, we will have plenty of opportunities to work, learn, and grow together.

In Dance, you will be introduced to various styles including Modern/Contemporary, Jazz, Hip-hop, Ballet, and various Cultural dance styles. I also look forward to learning about Dance from all of you and for you to share with me the kinds of Dances from your various cultures. We will be doing different kinds of dance performances, typically they are performed at the end of the semester but we will have to adjust them to make them virtual this year. More information on that will come as the semester goes on.

Thank you for your interest in Dance and for signing up for this fun and exciting course!! You will learn a lot and try many new things. Remember to always try your best even if it is hard and to trust yourselves. Do NOT worry about others and their abilities in Dance. We are all in this together! REMEMBER: The PROCESS is more important than the PRODUCT.

    Let's have a wonderful 2020-2021 school year!!!!!

Dancing together
  • Ms. Coran's Bio

The 2020-20201 school year begins my seventh year teaching Dance at Smith High School and my eighth year teaching overall. At Smith, I have taught classes in Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Advanced Honors Dance and I have choreographed numerous concerts and performances featuring our students.

My passion for dance started when I was a young girl and I have been dancing for more than twenty years, studying many styles including Contemporary/Modern, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Ballet and West African. I danced seriously throughout high school and went on to pursue Dance in college, graduating with a double major in US History and Dance from Bates College in 2009. A few years after my time in school I decided that I wanted to pursue education and I went back to school to obtain my Master's Degree. In 2014 I graduated from UNCG with my Masters in Dance Education, as well as with my K-12 teaching license in Dance. My first teaching job began as soon as I finished Graduate school in 2014 and I haven't looked back since!

I absolutely love teaching and working with young adults through Dance, because I love seeing them discover this art form; many for the first time. So many young people have so much potential, they just haven't had the opportunity to tap into their creativity. Many students start off the semester in Beginning dance saying they are shy and quiet and do not like to perform. By the end of the semester, they are up on the stage in the front row dancing, smiling and showing so much happiness in one of our concerts. That growth within a student during the course of the semester is why my job is special and I look forward to having that same experience with all of you as we work, learn and grow together.

Welcome to Dance!
