Bienvenidos a mi clase! My name is Abigail Hicks and I have been teaching students Spanish at Northern Middle since 2010. I am a graduate from Greensboro College. I am from North Carolina, but have been to several Spanish speaking countries and even lived in Peru one of my summers during college. It is my passion to make the Spanish language and culture relevant to my students. Not all of my students get the joy and privilege of traveling to Spanish speaking countries, so it is my goal that students get to spend a little part of their day experiencing as much of the Spanish culture as possible while learning the target language.
6th grade Spanish: Students get a taste of the Spanish language and culture to see if it is something they want to pursue through middle school. Students learn about the different Spanish speaking countries, how they celebrate different holidays, learn basic conversation, numbers, time, the calendar, and weather.
7th grade Spanish: This class is part 1A of Spanish 1 at the high school level. Student will learn about the Spanish speaking countries, but our main focus is the language. We will learn basic conversation, numbers, time, calendar, weather, likes and dislikes, characteristics, school related material and food. Our focus is introducing the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in Spanish. We do not have test and quizzes, we focus on the different skills to have a more performance based learning experience.
8th grade Spanish: This class is part 1B of Spanish 1 at the high school level. At the end of 8th grade, students will earn credit for Spanish 1 at the high school level if they have passed both seventh grade Spanish and eighth grade Spanish. This class is a continuation of 7th grade Spanish. We start the year with review and then start learning places, family, restaurant, household terminology and many grammar concepts. We really try to focus on mastering our reading, writing, listening and Speaking skills at the Spanish 1 level. This is a performance based learning experience so we do not have test and quizzes, we have real life scenario activities on the four skills that need to be mastered.
