Beyond the Classroom

We give them the well-rounded experience they need to become the full person they’re meant to be.

What your child learns outside the classroom can be just as important as the education they gain inside the classroom. GCS students become well-rounded, successful learners because of the tremendous variety of opportunities we make available. As a large, diverse district, we can offer high-level, competitive athletics. More service-learning and community engagement opportunities. More clubs and student organizations. More ways for students to try new things, discover their potential, bond with classmates and open their minds to what the world has to offer.

The energy at GCS is like nothing else you’ll experience in the county — Friday night lights inside a packed stadium, center stage performances with standing ovations, students forming meaningful connections across the community, and countless other examples of leadership, creative expression and shared passions. You might see students participating in Latin, math, robotics or band competitions around the state. You’ll notice students on the banks of Buffalo Creek, testing water quality. You’ll send your 18-year-old off to get registered to vote for the first time.  Whatever the experience, our students know the boundless joy that comes with discovering an activity they love alongside people who mean a lot to them, and that kind of experience supports them for a lifetime.

Exciting athletics

Whether students are trying a new sport or hoping to get recruited, GCS has outstanding competitive athletics programs in a variety of sports, including football, soccer, track and field, softball, wrestling, swimming and more. Visit our athletics website or reach out to your school’s athletic director to learn more.

Arts

Encourage your child to explore the arts after school. Throughout their GCS journey, they can experience a broad range of artistic activities that help uncover passions and potential: jazz band, choral groups, theatre, school musicals, dance, visual arts clubs — and, of course, our amazing drum lines — are just a few examples of the ways they can stretch their imaginations and express their creativity.

Clubs and student organizations

Across the district, GCS offers hundreds of clubs and student organizations to suit every kind of student and passion. Explore JROTC, Student Government Association, Yearbook, Science Olympiad, Model UN, Beta Club and hundreds more. Or, join a group centered on a specific interest or cause like writing letters to those in need, advocating for human rights, playing frisbee golf, working out with community mentors, or meeting weekly for a guitar jam. When students want to organize and lead a group, they have our full support.

Opportunities for civic and community engagement

GCS integrates service learning into every student’s experience, from grades K-12. As a public school district, we are closely woven into the fabric of our community. As such, our students are engaged with community organizations and develop an empathetic perspective on the world around them and the many different types of people we call our neighbors.

We listen to what students want — and respond.

At GCS, we invite students to dream up extracurricular and co-curricular activities they want to pursue, knowing that they have our support. Our teachers and staff will help them develop a club, organization or experience that enables them to explore and interest further and engage with other students and our community.

Choice Schools and Programs that go beyond traditional learning

Every student receives a strong foundation for success at GCS. Many families choose an academic path that positions their child for specialized experience in high-skill, high-passion or high-academic areas such as International Baccalaureate, aviation, computer science, global studies, health sciences, performing arts, robotics and more.

Real-world exposure — ready for anything

We’re not just preparing our students for the world — we bring the world to them. Every single student has the opportunity to take college classes, attain workforce certification or credential, and engage in internships and apprenticeships (some paid!). GCS creates valuable, hands-on experience, whether they’re going on to college enrollment, employment, enlistment in the military or entrepreneurship.
