    Message for Week of  4/11/2021

The PTA April Zoom meeting will be on Monday, April 12th at 6:30pm.

Students will be participating in the spring NWEA Growth Math and ELA assessments this week.  In-person students will take the assessment at school on the days of their cohort from 9am – 11am.  Remote students who have chosen to take the assessment remotely will login with their math teacher on Monday and Tuesday during 9am- 11am to take the assessment.  It is important that students remember to bring their device fully charged these two days so they are ready to use them to take the assessments.  Also, some students will have the assessments read aloud as an accommodation.  Those students are encouraged to bring a pair of ear buds with them to school to use during the test.

3rd quarter report cards will be sent home with students on Tuesday, April 13th for cohort A, and Thursday, April 15th for cohort B.  The remote students will have their report cards mailed home and also sent through the PowerSchool Email document Delivery system.

School pictures by Lifetouch will be on Tuesday or Friday.  Remote students who want to have their picture taken should reserve a time on April 13th using the sign up genius link here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040A4AADAF23AAFE3-picture

Finally, a reminder that all in-person cohort A and cohort B students will continue with their current schedule next week including those students who were initially invited to begin five days earlier.  On Monday, April 19th all students who were on cohort A or Cohort B will attend together.  The updated cohort groups and schedule for all students will be posted in Canvas by Wednesday of this week.  April 21st, May 19th, May 26th, and June 2nd will be remote learning days for our students so we can conduct the testing that is already scheduled.

It will be important that with an increase in the number of students at school each day, that students remain diligent in wearing their mask properly expect when given adult permission to take a break or while eating.  Also, students should continue to keep as much distance between them and others and use the hand sanitizer and wash their hands as frequently as possible.  Parents we ask that you continue to monitor for symptoms or possible exposure to Covid and notify the office and keep your student home if your student is not feeling well, has been exposed or has test positive for Covid.

Thank you, and have a great evening!

      Special Message for 4/8/2021

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W., principal of Kiser Middle School, with an important announcement.

Yesterday the district announced that in-person cohort A and cohort B students will begin attending school five days a week beginning on Monday, April 19th.  Therefore, all students who were attending in-person on the cohorts will be attending school together on that Monday.

The students who were initially contacted before break about starting on April 12th five days a week, will wait and start with everyone on Monday, April 19th.  Therefore, after April 19th we will no longer have students attending two days a week.

Beginning on Monday, April 19th GCS schools will no longer required students to complete the temperature check or the attestation questions or pass.  I thank all our students who have been doing a great job with that each morning.  All of our other health and safety protocols will remain in place including wearing a mask, good hygiene, and continuing to keep as much distance between yourself and others during the day.

The week of April 12th the students will continue with their regular schedule either on cohort a or cohort b, or for those who have been remote.  The students will be administered the NWEA the week of April 12th, and teachers will be sharing the schedule with students tomorrow.

The remote students schedule will change as well.  The remote students will begin to login and participate in the live call during the same time while the rest of their group is in-person with the teacher.  The revised schedule and cohorts will be posted next week, and it will include the times for each core class for our remote students.  It is important for our remote students to change their schedule so they can continue to get the same amount of instruction each week as our in-person students.

Thank you, and have a great evening.

    Message for Week of 3/8/2021

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

We look forward to having all three grade levels back in-person this upcoming week.  Once again students who are on Cohort A in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will receive another message at 7:30 pm this evening.

The Kiser PTA will have a Kiser Spirit Day on Friday, March 12th at GSO Sip and Shake any time from 7 am to 7 pm.  Check out the flyer for more information and be sure to tell them you are from Kiser, as the PTA will get 20% of the proceeds on Friday!  Also, now that we are back in-person be sure to check out the PTA website https://www.kiserpta.org/  and be sure to order your Kiser Spirit wear.  Finally, the PTA is in need of individuals who are willing to serve on the nominating committee.  The PTA is getting ready to start making nominations for next year’s executive board and will need some members to help with the process.  You can contact Kiser PTA President, DeeDee Burnett, at deedeeburnett2525@gmail.com for more information.

Parents, now that we are back in-person with some of our students it is very important we have the most updated contact information for your child.  Please be sure to take a few minutes and login to your SchoolMint account or email Mrs. Worthy hayesc3@gcsnc.com so we can update your phone and contact information.

It is time for our students to start to receive their new GCS Chromebooks!  Please listen and read the information carefully so you know the steps in order to receive the new device.  First, the GCS Chromebooks will be a device that students should plan to carry with them back and forth to school.  It will be important for students to take good care of the Chromebook, and make sure it is charged each night for use at school during the day.  Each student will have the device issued to them, and will keep the same device through high school graduation or if you move out of Guilford County Schools.  6th Grade In-Person students should plan to bring their old Lenovo tablet and charger to school next week either on Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday and once we have received the old device the new one will be given to your student.  7th Grade In-Person students should plan to bring their old Lenovo tablet device and charger on Tuesday for Cohort A and Friday for Cohort B.  8th Grade in-person students will receive their devices the following week, and remote students will get information soon about pick up times and locations for your new device.  Also, attached is a Chromebook – Home Instructions document that students will receive to help with using the new device.

The 3rd Quarter Interim benchmarks are going to be administered and taken on Wednesdays during the month of March while all students are at home on their remote learning day.  On Wednesday, March 10th 7th-grade students will take their math benchmark, and 8th-grade students will log in to take their science benchmark.  Students will receive information from their teacher about where and when to log in for the benchmark assessment.

Students and parents should’ve received important information about Middle and High School Registration for the 2021-2022 school year on Friday evening.  If you have any questions about registration please contact one of the school counselors.

Please see the following documents to help assist you with class registration.

    for  Week of 2/28/2021

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

Again, I want to say thank you to all the staff, students, parents, and everyone who helped us have a great first week with our 6th-grade students.  We look forward to welcoming our 7th-grade students back this coming week.  In about 30 minutes the students assigned to 6th and 7th-grade Cohort A will receive a message so they know we are expecting them in the building on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday, March 1st is the next Virtual PTA Meeting at 6:30 pm.

A reminder that the deadline to apply to any of the high school or magnet choices options for the 2021-2022 school year is Wednesday, March 3rd.  Please click on the SchoolMint icon on the Kiser webpage to submit your application!

I am excited to inform you that Kiser received its delivery of the new student Chromebooks this past week!  We will be working to get the devices ready for students.  Please be on the look out for important information about how students will be assigned, received, and when to return the previous school tablet.  In-person students will receive their device on the days they are in school when we are ready and they have returned the previous device, and we will be organizing a time for our all remote students to receive the new Chromebook soon.

GCS will begin to utilize the CrisisGo App to help facilitate a quicker screening and entry process.  Middle school students or parents may download the app onto your smartphone in order to complete the Attestation Questions.  Students who have their own device will be able to show the “green pass” at the screening station staff member.  Students will still need to have their temperature taken even if they are using the app.  Students and/or guardians will receive a daily email reminder and link on the cohort days your student is scheduled to be in the building as well if you do not have a phone to download the app in order to complete it on another device.  The counselors will be helping students during lunch who want to load the app and show them how to complete the screening questions, and the more students who have the “green” pass will help speed up our morning arrival process.

As we begin to have more students on campus this week, please continue to provide us some patience as we tweak and work through our procedures for a safe and efficient arrival and dismissal as well.  Again, during dismissal students may show their phone with a text message from the parent in order to be released from the classroom for car rider dismissal.

Registration for 2021-2022 will begin with the Online Registration Window from March 6th-14th.  All students will register online through their PowerSchool accounts.

We have attached documents that will help you with the registration process.  Specific registration directions and more details will be sent out in next week’s announcements.  In the meantime, if you have questions, please contact Mrs. Ingram (ingramk2@gcsnc.com).

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important messages for the upcoming week.

We are excited to begin welcoming more of our students back into the building this week.  A reminder that 6th Grade students on Tiger Cohort A will be in school on Monday, February 22nd and Tuesday, February 23rd and 6th-grade students on Pride Cohort B will be in school on Thursday, February 25th and Friday, February 26th.  Although, Friday may become a remote day for all students if GCS receives enough vaccinations to help teachers get appointment times.  Please look for more information about Friday from GCS!  7th and 8th-grade students will continue with their current remote schedules until their grade level enters the building.  6th Grade remote students should use the remote schedule found in the Student and Parent Reopening Guide for the new schedule when 6th-grade students return to school.  Also, 6th-grade remote students should use the information from their teachers to determine when to be online for live classes.  Each student’s schedule staying remote may look a little different depending on the class your student is in, and will continue to communicate expectations and information as best we can.

In about 30 minutes the students in 6th Grade Tiger Cohort A will receive a separate message from me about tomorrow.  If you do not receive a message about returning tomorrow please do not send your student to school!

GCS will begin to utilize the CrisisGo App to help facilitate a quicker screening and entry process.  Middle school students or parents may download the app onto your smart phone in order to complete the Attestation Questions.

A reminder that Wednesday, March 3rd is the deadline to submit a Magnet or School Choice Application for the 2021-2022 school year.  Click here to submit an application https://gcsnc.schoolmint.net/welcomeback

Tuesday, February 23rd Kiser will host a Rising 6th Grade Virtual Information night for all our incoming 5th grade parents and students on Microsoft Teams Live.  The link will be available on Monday on the school website.

3rd Quarter Interim Reports are scheduled to go home with students on Tuesday.  6th Grade in-person students will receive a hard copy, and all other students will receive them electronically similar to the 2nd Quarter Report Card.

There is a lot of information and changes pertaining to the reopening of schools and adjusting the remote schedules to match the teachers also teaching in the building.  Please give us some patience as we continue to pivot and begin our hybrid schedule.  I encourage all parents and students to continue to read through our Student and Parent Reopening Guide, and check the school website for information.

Thank you, and have a wonderful evening.

Special Message for 2/17/2021

    Greetings Tigers,

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important announcements.

First, I hope everyone is staying safe and dry from the winter storm.  In preparation for the potential power outages and unavailability of internet access the NWEA Math assessment that was scheduled to be taken remotely on Friday will now be taken remotely on Wednesday, February 24th.

This message is very important for those students who are returning to school for in-person learning.  It is important that all students and parents understand the health and safety protocols that are in place, and the changes in our procedures to help facilitate a safe return.

A couple of things to highlight so parents can prepare your student for a successful reopening.

    • Face coverings must be worn at all times including the school bus transportation except while eating and or drinking and when directed by the teacher it is alright to take it off.  There is no exceptions to this health procedure, and students who persistently refuse to wear a face-covering correctly will be reassigned to remote learning.  Kiser will have some masks available to pass out for students who show up without one.
    • Student arrival time will begin at 8:30 am and dismissal will begin at 3:10 pm.  Car riders will be dropped off and picked up in the new location which is behind the A and B wing.  Students will not be able to be dropped off before 8:30 am as we have done in the past.  Students should wait in their vehicle until a Kiser staff member has taken their temperature.  Once the temperature has been taken, the student will be directed to enter the building at their designated grade level hallway.  At the entrance to the hallway, the students will give the screener their name, temperature, and answer the four screening questions or quickly show the CrisisGo safety iPass that GCS is going to implement for middle and high school students.  The students will be allowed to proceed to their class if they have a “green” pass or answer the screening questions appropriately for being at school.
    • In the afternoon car rider dismissal, parents/guardians should send a text message to your student when you arrive in the pickup line, and beginning at 3:10pm students will show the text message to their teacher in order to be dismissed to the car rider line.  We encourage you to teach your child to acknowledge they are on the way to meet you at the car rider line.  For anyone who does not have access to a cell phone, we will have staff available to call for students.
    • Breakfast and lunch will be served to students in the classroom.  Both continue to be free for all students through the end of the school year.  Students may also bring their lunch from home.  Students who need it will also have the option of taking home additional meals on either Tuesdays or Fridays for the days they will be out of school.
    • Students will not need to bring their device from home.  We are hopeful that we will receive the new student Chromebooks the district has ordered for 4th through 12th grade students.  Once students have the Chromebooks from the district they will take them home and to school on the day they are scheduled.
    • Students will spend the majority of the day in the classroom that they are scheduled for homeroom on the cohort chart.  We understand that this is not the most developmentally appropriate practice for middle school students; however, we are trying to make sure that we keep students in as small a group as possible and not having to spend all day cleaning and disinfecting their desks but focusing on instruction and academics.  The teachers will rotate between the classes.  Students will be expected to use a disinfectant wipe to clean their own desk before lunch and at dismissal.
    • Students will have opportunities to use the restroom throughout the day with their classes, and as an individual but need to remember that they have a responsibility to remain at least 6 ft socially distant from others throughout the day whether they are in class or in the hallway.
    • Students will not have to wear SMOD; however, follow the non-SMOD day guidelines and the GCS Dress Code.

Finally, I want to stress the importance of communicating with the school in a situation where you believe your student may have developed symptoms of COVID, possibly been exposed, or are awaiting test results.  When in doubt you need to keep your student home, and immediately call the school to determine the appropriate steps that need to be taken to keep our students, staff, and community safe.  There may be times that your student may have to isolate and quarantine and move into remote learning if they are well and able to continue learning from home.  Students who become symptomatic and are unable to work, the school will work with them to make sure they can take the time they need to get well.  It is going to take ALL of us to do our part in communicating information in order to be able to continue with in-person learning safely and efficiently between the time we reopen and the end of the school year.

We are excited to see our students, and we understand that many of them are anxious about returning.  Reopening of school is going to be new for everyone, and I ask that our families give the school staff and your student some patience as we all get adjusted to being back together.

Thank you, and have a wonderful evening.

    Gracias.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

First, as many of you are aware the Board of Education approved the reopening schedule for middle school students.

    • 6th Grade Tiger Cohort A students will begin on Monday, February 22nd and 6th grade Pride Cohort B will begin on Thursday, February 25th
    • 7th Grade Tiger Cohort A students will begin on Monday, March 1st and 7th grade Pride Cohort B students will begin on Thursday, March 4th
    • 8th Grade Tiger Cohort A students will begin on Monday, March 8th and 8th Grade Pride Cohort B students will begin on Thursday, March 11th.

Parents, if you indicated to us that your preference was to remain remote, your child will continue to learn remotely as the other students begin to return in-person.  The schedule for all students will be adjusted, and it will be closer to the bell schedule for school.  The specific times for each core class whether in-person or remote are listed in the Student and Parent Guide to Reopening of Schools.  The guide has been attached to the email, and will also be available on the Kiser website.  Teachers will also be working with students over the first few weeks to ensure that everyone understand the new schedule and knows when and where to access their live classes.

It is important that before returning to school that students and families know which Cohort their child is assigned to attend, so they do not show up to school on the wrong days.  The student cohort groups were posted for students and families on their math teacher’s Canvas page.  You can also contact the front office and we will help notify parents of the correct start date for your specific student.  It is also important for parents to log in to your student’s PowerSchool account and click on the transportation link to check that bus transportation has been setup.  If transportation is ready for your student you will see the transportation details listed on the bottom of that page, which will include bus number, bus stop location and times.  It can take several days for the transportation department to set up new stops, so please do not wait until the day before to check.

If you need to request transportation from the district please click on the link: https://app.perfectforms.com/PresentationServer/Form.aspx/Play/_2IGggMo?f=_2IGggMo

Monday, February 15th is an optional teacher workday.  There will be no live calls or classes on Monday.

Thank you, and have a wonderful evening.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W., principal of Kiser Middle School, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

Material distribution and report card pick up will be on Wednesday, February 3rd from 4-6pm for all students.  Each student will receive a packet that includes instructional materials such as workbooks, novels, etc…as well as their 2nd quarter report card.  6th and 7th grade packets should be picked up in the new car rider line which is in the back of A and B wing.  6th and 7th grade parents should turn down the driveway across from the tennis courts along Campus Dr.  8th grade packets will be picked up in the circle under the front awning.  Also, just like in the fall we will be collecting canned food items in order to donate back to Backpack Beginnings, and students should return any library books, class novels, or any other item that they need to return.  At this time we have not received the GCS Chromebooks, so it looks like we will need to distribute those to students at another time.  We look forward to seeing our students and families on Wednesday evening.

If you can’t make it Wednesday for pick up, we will have the items available in the cafeteria for pick up.  We ask that you continue to call and make an appointment time, and we will have the bag pulled and ready for you to pick up at the office.

In preparation for receiving the new GCS Chromebook, the district has created Nearpod lessons which will be available on Canvas.  The Nearpod lessons will help students learn how to use and login to the new device as it will be slightly different the current Lenovo tablets.  Please take time to complete the Nearpod, so you are ready to use the Chromebooks when they arrive.  Link to make a copy of the Nearpod lesson: https://share.nearpod.com/e/5O44WDAmbdb

The Magnet and School Choice application window is open from January 14th until March 3rd, so any rising 9th grade student interested in the high school options for next year now is the time to apply here https://gcsnc.schoolmint.net/welcomeback .  Also, GCS is hosting a School Choice Showcase February 1st through February 5th in order for students and families to learn more about the different high school options and programs available for students (https://www.gcsnc.com/Page/73265).  Kiser will host a virtual rising 9th grade information night on Tuesday, February 9th from 6:30-7:30pm.  The link for the Rising 9th Grade Parent Night will be posted by Monday, February 8th for parents to join the call.  Students and parents are encouraged to continue to sign-up for the virtual Future Friday Q and A sessions with the high school options.  Please contact Mrs. Ingram for more information about the Q and A sessions for 8th grade students.

In the next couple of weeks, we will be administering the NWEA screener assessment to all of our students for Growth: Reading 6+ and Growth: Math 6+.  The screener will be administered online by our teachers, and will help us provide teachers, parents, and students with information about their progress in reading in math over the next couple of years.  The reading will be administered to students on Friday, February 12th and the math will be administered on Friday, February 19th.  Students will receive more directions for where to login on Canvas as we get closer to the assessment.

On Friday, February 5th students will begin to have live classes in the morning.  Their teachers will share with them the new schedule for Fridays moving forward while we continue with all our students working remotely.  The schedule for Monday through Thursday will remain the same with the exception of the slight adjustment that has already been made for the 8th grade classes.  The additional time is essential because the longer we stay in all remote learning, it is going to be difficult for teachers to utilize the current time to make sure they cover all the content and standards for the school year.

Media Center form link to check-out library books: : https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=H_vimqLeQ0yBlHYk_LuzDL8xZvHoaVRDsSy0-dsaHllUQTgyNUpRNVRZRzI4SVNIRlBOVjZXOVRCQy4u

6th and 7th grade packets should be picked up in the new car rider line which is in the back of A and B wing, and 8th grade packets will be picked up in the circle under the front awning.  Also, just like in the fall we will be collecting canned food items in order to donate back to Backpack Beginnings.  We are hopeful that the new GCS Chromebooks will be available to distribute to our students as well!

GCS has also enabled PowerSchool to be able to send each student’s report card through email.  You may have already received notification from the district that there are several steps to complete in order to opt into receiving your report card through email.  Once the school has received more information about those steps, it will be placed on the school website and sent to parents.  We will continue with our original plan, and will be printing a hard copy of each student’s report card which can be picked up on Wednesday, February 3rd.  Report cards that are not picked up on Material Distribution night will be mailed to parents for the 2nd quarter.

The screener will be administered online by our teachers, and will help us provide teachers, parents, and students with information about their progress in reading in math over the next couple of year.  The reading will be administered to students on Friday, February 12th and the math will be administered on Friday, February 19th.  Students will receive more directions for where to login on Canvas as we get closer to the assessment.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

First, I know many of you are already aware that the middle and high school reopening was delayed for at least another three weeks.  I will continue to work on getting our cohorts, groups, and schedules ready for when the time will come for us to re-enter; however, because we are not coming back into the building I will wait on communicating more of the information and details until we have a date for our return.  It is important for students to not become discouraged, but rather renew your focus on attending live classes, completing and submitting work and assignments, and communicating with teachers to address inbox messages, feedback, and alerts.  I have been so impressed with how our students have taken on these responsibilities, and parents I know how much more it requires of your support and assistance while students are learning remotely and I thank you for that.  I want to remind you that you are not alone in supporting your student, so please reach out and let us know what we can do to help.

Even though we are delayed, parents be sure if you intend to send your student back to school for in-person learning that you have completed the transportation request form on the Kiser Website.  Students and parents should be able to see the bus information on the transportation tab when they are logged into PowerSchool.  If your students has an assigned bus with stop time details listed then transportation has received your request for transportation.  Please make sure you have this completed soon, so transportation has time to include your address into the route list for when students return to school.  Link https://app.perfectforms.com/PresentationServer/Form.aspx/Play/_2IGggMo?f=_2IGggMo

Monday, January 18th is Martin Luther King holiday and Tuesday, January 19th is the Mandated Teacher Workday and there is no live classes on either of these two days, and the building and office will be closed on Monday.

7th and 8th Grade students will also have a modified schedule this week as they will complete the 2nd Quarter Interim Assessments online, and their teachers will share the details of when to login to complete the assessment and when live classes will be held.  Students should do their best on these assessment, as it helps teachers determine the content students are learning throughout the school year.

Parents and students, mark you calendars for Wednesday, February 3rd from 4pm-6pm will be report card pick up and material distribution night.  We plan to prepare bags for each student to pick up that will include instructional materials for the 3rd grading period, the 2nd Quarter Report Card, and more.  We will provide more details about the report card pick up and material distribution night as we get closer.  We also be collecting canned food items again in order to help support the Backpack Beginnings and their effort to feed families during the pandemic.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

The PTA will have their January meeting on Monday, January 11th at 6:30pm on zoom.

A reminder that the end of the 2nd grading period is Friday, January 15th.  Students need to make sure they are communicating with teachers on their live classes and working to submit all their work that is due.

On Tuesday of this past week, your student’s math teacher posted information about cohort groups for the potential reopening on January 21st.  If you or your student still has a question about which cohort and days your student will be in the building they should contact their teacher.  It is important for students and parents to know the appropriate cohort group, because students who arrive to school on the incorrect cohort will be sent home.  The classes are being scheduled using specific capacity in order to have students remain socially distant throughout the school day.  The cohort group that were posted in Canvas also includes the students who have indicated they are going to remain remote.  More information about the remote time changes and expectations will be sent as we get closer to the reopening.

A couple of things to highlight so parents can prepare your student for a successful reopening.

    • Face coverings must be worn at all times including the school bus transportation except while eating and or drinking and when directed by the teacher it is alright to take it off.  There is no exceptions to this health procedure, and students who persistently refuse to wear a face covering correctly will be reassigned to remote learning.  Kiser will have some masks available to pass out for students who show up without one.
    • Student arrival time will begin at 8:30am and dismissal will begin at 3:10pm.  Car riders will be dropped off and picked up in the new location which is behind the A and B wing.  More specific information about temperature checks and attestation screener questions will be provided soon.  Students will not be able to be dropped off before 8:30am as we have done in the past.  In the afternoon, parents/guardians should send a text message to your student when you arrive in the pick up line, and beginning at 3:10pm students will show the text message to their teacher in order to be dismissed to the car rider line.
    • Breakfast and lunch will be served to students in the classroom.  Both continue to be free for all students through the end of the school year.  Students may also bring their lunch from home.

Monday, January 18th is Martin Luther King Holiday and Tuesday, January 19th is a mandated teacher workday so there is no live remote classes on those days.  Also, if the district continues with reopening on Thursday, January 21st for 6th grade students Kiser will shift to Wednesdays be the day of no live remote classes for students.  Essentially, our current Friday will become our Wednesday since 6th grade students will be coming back for instruction on Thursday and Friday.  If the district shifts the reopening dates, Kiser will continue with the current remote schedule with some little adjustments.

Finally, we will be communicating drive thru pick up for instructional materials for remote students once we have confirmed we will be reopening for in-person learning in January.  If we do not reopen for in-person learning, we will be working to schedule materials pick-up and other items soon.

Thank you, and have a wonderful evening.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important announcements for the upcoming week.

First, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and I hope everyone had some time to rest and stay healthy during the winter break.

Last Thursday Guilford County Schools announced that it was delaying the reopening of in-person learning for middle school students until later in January pending the review of the health metrics by the Board of Education.  Therefore, 6th grade students in Pride Cohort B are scheduled to return to school on Thursday, January 21st.  6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in Tiger Cohort A are scheduled to return to school on Monday, January 25th.  7th and 8th grade students in Pride Cohort B are scheduled to return on Thursday, January 28th.  Students and parents will be able to find the cohort and group for your student tomorrow, January 5th by 5pm in your student’s Canvas page.  Also, throughout the week your student’s teacher will be available to help answer any questions that pertain to the cohort or group they have been assigned for our reopening.  Also, attached you will find the Student and Parent Guide to Reopening of Schools that has been shared previously.  Please take time to read about some of the procedures that will be in place to safely reopen.  As we get closer to the reopening of schools we will provide more information in regards to the schedule changes and other information in order to successfully reopen school.

Also, students and parents can locate the bus information under the transportation link when a student is logged into PowerSchool.  The information should include the stop locations, time, and bus number.

This week the students will continue with the remote learning schedule that has been in place since the beginning of the school year.

Please be sure to continue to contact the office if you need assistance with technology or other issues so we can help our students get off to a great start in 2021!!

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important messages for the upcoming week.

The GCS winter break will begin on Wednesday, December 23rd through Monday, January 4th.  The students will resume their live classes on Tuesday, January 5th.  The school and office will be closed for staff and students during this time.  Again, I know that this year the holiday season means making many changes to family traditions and how we celebrate the holidays in order to be healthy and safe, but I hope everyone is able to slow down and enjoy this time of year.  I appreciate the students who have been working hard every day to keep up and engage in learning.  It is time to relax, spend time with immediate family, read some good books, and get ready for our potential reopening.

8th grade students and parents, we are excited that we have added a future Friday session with the Computer Science Academy program focused on artificial intelligence and cyber security at Northeast High School to the list of Friday Virtual Q and A sessions.  Also, students who are interested in the performing arts program at Weaver should sign up for the virtual Q and A, the students who want to take CTE courses at Weaver will learn about those options from their traditional high school.  Please use the Sign Up Genius Link to sign up for the session.  Any questions can be directed to your 8th grade counselor, Mrs. Ingram (ingramk2@gcsnc.comhttps://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0F4BADAD29A75-future

As the Yearbook Staff begins working on this year's book, we are asking for help from our students, teachers and parents.  Since we can't take photos around school, we'd love for you to submit photos via Yearbook Snap.  This is a free app you can download that will help us collect the pictures you take. We'd love to see your learning setup, any activities that you've been participating in, you in a mask...anything that can help us tell the story of this unique school year.  The passcode for Yearbook Snap is tiger.  Go ahead and start submitting your photos today!

This yearbook will also include Shout Outs for 8th grade students.  A Shout Out is a photo and a small message that parents and families can place in the yearbook congratulating their 8th grader on a year well done!  More information on Shout Outs will be coming soon!

Yearbook Sales currently are only happening online.  You can purchase your 2020-2021 yearbook at yearbookforever.com.  The price of the yearbook is currently $28.00 but will go up to $35.00 in March.  You don't want to miss out on having a yearbook that tells the story of Kiser during Quarantine and Virtual Learning!

Please see the attached flyer from the ROTC Program at Grimsley High School.  The ROTC students are collecting sock donations on the times listed on the flyer in order to help support the local homeless shelters during the holiday season.  Please consider helping these students with their annual giving campaign!

We encourage all our students to participate in the GCS winter reading challenge!  Students that read 300 minutes or more between December 23rd and January 4th can be entered into a GCS drawing for a Kindle Fire tablet, tickets to the Greensboro Science Center, and Winterfest passes.  Please encourage your students to participate.  Below is the link to submit reading minutes.  The link will be on Destiny, the media center Canvas page, and your student’s ELA teachers Canvas page.

Connect Ed message for Sunday…..

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important announcements for the upcoming week.

Please see the attached flyer from the ROTC Program at Grimsley High School.  The ROTC students are collecting sock donations on the times listed on the flyer in order to help support the local homeless shelters during the holiday season.  Please consider helping these students with their annual giving campaign!

Earlier in the week the district sent a communication to all families regarding the in-person End of Course (EOC) and End of Grade (EOG) requirements for our students this year.  As of right now the Federal government has not approved North Carolina to receive a waiver from Federal School Accountability, and the NC DPI utilizes these state tests as a measure for the accountability model.  As of right now, GCS students will continue to have to take these assessments in-person.  Kiser does not have any students who will take these assessments before the end of the school year; however, some schools on a block schedule will begin these assessment in January.  As we get closer to the end of the school year, we will develop the plan for our students to administer the assessments to include the students who have selected to remain remote.

As the Yearbook Staff begins working on this year's book, we are asking for help from our students, teachers and parents.  Since we can't take photos around school, we'd love for you to submit photos via Yearbook Snap.  This is a free app you can download that will help us collect the pictures you take. We continue to work on the planning that will go into the reopening of school in January.  In the near future we hope to share some information to help students and families prepare to make some adjustments to the schedule to accommodate having students return in-person and some students continuing to work remotely.  I appreciate everyone who has helped us verify your preference for learning once we reopen schools.  If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to me in the office.

Again, I want to continue to encourage our students to keep up the hard work and to do their best work each day.  It is imperative for students to communicate with both their parents and teachers so we know how to support their learning.

    Week of  12/6/2020

Here is the Connect Ed for the week……

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal for Kiser Middle School, with several important announcements for the upcoming week.

The building and office reopens this week on Monday, December 7th.  We ask that parents and families continue to call to make an appointment for anything that the office can assist with while we continue to be remote.

Your student’s homeroom teacher should have communicated with you in order to verify the preference you selected for the potential reopening of schools in January.  If you have any questions about the preference or the implications that has for your student please do not hesitate to contact me.  We will be using the verified preference information to make final plans to potentially reopen for in-person learning two days a week for our cohort groups.  More information about assigned cohorts, scheduled class times, remote learning will be shared over the next couple of week as we get closer to possibly reopening in January.

This past week was the half way point of the 2nd grading period.  Parents, please take time to review your student’s academic progress and view their current grades in PowerSchool.  Also, any student who is struggling will have a copy of the interim either emailed or sent directly to the parent.  It is important to help your student hold themselves accountable and develop the skills to self-monitor and regulate their progress.  Remote learning is much more difficult for middle school students who have never been asked to do some responsibilities that we would learn much older in age, so please continue to help them keep up and complete their assignments.

Thank you to the 178 8th grade students who have completed the Career Assessment survey.  If you have not completed the survey please visit your social studies teachers Canvas page or the Kiser Counseling Canvas page in order to find the information about how to complete the Career Assessment survey.  We want to have 100% of our students complete the survey.

Be sure to visit Barnes and Noble in the Friendly Center this week for the Kiser PTA Virtual Book Fair.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.

8th grade Students and Parents – It’s time Learn about your High School Options during Kiser’s Virtual Future Fridays!  If you are interested in the IB program, Middle/Early Colleges or any of the Academies, Kiser is hosting live virtual sessions with some of the most popular programs in GCS on Dec 11, Jan 8, Jan 15, Jan 22 and Jan 29th!  You can sign up for one or more sessions using the Sign Up Genius Link below!  You will receive a Microsoft Teams link the day before the session at the email address you provide in the Sign Up Genius.  Parents and students are welcome to join representatives from these programs for our 20 minute Q&A sessions!  If you are looking for a program that is not listed, please check the Sign Up Genius again, it may be added if the program is available to host a session.  Any questions can be directed to your 8th grade counselor, Mrs. Ingram (ingramk2@gcsnc.comhttps://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0F4BADAD29A75-future

Thank you, and have a great evening.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

First, I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday break.

A reminder that the school and office is closed this week after Thanksgiving, and all staff will be working remotely.  Live classes will resume this week, and the building and office will reopen on Monday, December 7th

Parents, this week we will begin the process to confirm the reopening preferences you completed earlier to help with our plans for potentially reopening schools in January.  I know the health metrics have changed quiet a bit since many of you have completed the preference, and you may need to make a change to your original preference this is the time to do so.  Please either respond to your teacher’s correspondence, call the front office, or email me in order to change your preference or talk about what a change in the preference may mean for your student.

Thanksgiving holiday break is from November 25th through November 27th.  There is no live classes and the building and office will be closed.  The week of November 30th through the December 4th live remote classes will resume, but the school and office will remain closed.  The office and building will reopen on Monday, December 7th.  Please continue to email or call the office for assistance during the remote week of November 30th.  GCS will continue to serve meals but only at select locations, so please be sure to visit the GCS homepage for a list of sites that will be serving lunch between 11am-12pm during the week of remote instruction while buildings are closed after the Thanksgiving holiday break.  https://www.gcsnc.com/site/default.aspx?PageType=3&DomainID=4&ModuleInstanceID=174&ViewID=6446EE88-D30C-497E-9316-3F8874B3E108&RenderLoc=0&FlexDataID=136860&PageID=1

Please see the attached flyer for details about the Kiser Book Fair at Barnes and Noble from December 5th through the 11th at the Friendly Center!  Some of the proceeds from the Book Fair will help support the Kiser PTA and the Kiser media center!

I encourage our families to continue to spend time staying active and healthy, and in order to help I have attached the GCS November Fitness Challenge calendar.  I hope you consider spending some time completing the activities listed for each day to maintain your health and physical fitness.

Beginning on Monday, November 23rd Kiser students will begin to participate in Health class during their PE encore.  The Health content will be slightly different since we are still in remote learning.  The Choice Led Health is a skills-based health curriculum providing student learning experiences to deepen their knowledge, attitudes, and skills using a variety of participatory methods. A choice led health teacher, Mrs. Hailey, personalizes instruction for all learners by providing a variety of “student choice and voice" assignments aligned with national and state health education standards.  The current virtual choice led health classroom provides numerous solutions to increase attention, recall information, and practice health related skills for a lifetime.  The curriculum will be implemented throughout the school year.  If you have questions about the health unit please contact your student’s PE teacher or Mrs. Hailey.

Finally, I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgivings!  I know for many it is a holiday that will be celebrated differently due to the continued pandemic, but I know we all have things we can be thankful for during this time.  I know I am extremely thankful for our hardworking and dedicated staff that continue to provide high quality instruction and activities during this time.  I am thankful to all those families and students who continue to work hard, and give their best each and every day despite the ongoing challenges.

Thank you, and have a wonderful evening.

    Week of 11/6/2020

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle, with several important announcements for the upcoming week.

Tuesday, November 10th at 6pm the Guilford County Board of Education will hold their next meeting, and will be discussing the reopening plans utilizing the health metrics and other information.  Middle school students were expected to potentially return on November 12th in two different cohorts for two days a week of in-person instruction; however, the health metrics have delayed all students from returning to school.  Please be sure to tune in and look for more important updates about the potential reopening of schools.

I want to say thank you to all those who have provided a response about your intentions about the potential return of students to in-person learning.  Kiser was able to collect 94%, and it is clear that each family has different considerations and opinions about what you want for your student.  Kiser is committed to making sure we can continue to provide a learning environment where all can feel safe and comfortable enough to focus on academics and instruction.  If you have any questions about our plans for reopening including the safety protocols and guidelines that will be in place please do not hesitate to reach out so we can discuss them in more detail and read the Student and Parent Guide to Reopening which is attached.

Wednesday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day.  In observance for all those who have served in the United States armed forces the school and office will be closed, and there will be no live classes for students.

The month of November often given us an opportunity to pause, and express gratitude and thanks to those who are special in our lives.  The PTA is providing an opportunity for our students, parents, and community to express their appreciation and gratitude for the hard working teachers and staff at Kiser.  The PTA encourages our students and families to write a card, thank you, or gratitude gram to your student’s teacher.  We will be collecting them here in the office, and the PTA will be delivering the cards and items received to staff before we are out for the Thanksgiving holiday break.

Finally, all the report cards were mailed the beginning part of the week, and you should receive the report card in the mail.  If you do not receive the report card please contact the office, so we can work on getting parents information about your student’s academic progress.

Thank you, and have a wonderful evening.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important messages for the upcoming week.

The report cards for the 1st quarter are in the mail, and you should receive it beginning part of the week.

Monday, November 2nd will be the next virtual PTA Meeting on Zoom at 6:30pm.

Tuesday, November 3rd is Election Day and there will be no live classes on Tuesday for students.  We encourage our students to use the time to get caught up on assignments and their work.  Parents, be sure to go out and vote on November 3rd if you have not already done so.  Also, please consider the two items on the local ballot that directly impact Guilford County Schools.  First, there is a proposed $300 million school bond referendum which would be used to address the Board approved Facility Master Plan.  The plan includes a project that would see Kiser rebuilt and replaced by a new facility.  Secondly, there is a proposed ¼ cent sales tax increase which would potentially provide an additional $19 million for the district to use for ongoing facilities and maintenance upkeep such as HVAC, roofing, etc…

Wednesday, November 4th Kiser will be closed for deep cleaning since the building will be utilized the previous day as a polling site.  All staff will be working remotely and the office will be closed for the facility to be sprayed and cleaned appropriately.

Thursday, November 5th is the scheduled day the district intends to review the health metrics and make a decision about the potential return of middle schools students on Thursday, November 12th.  Again, thank you to all those who have completed the preference form.  We will be using that to finalize the plans for safely reopening and potentially continuing with remote for some students who are not ready to return.  Please continue to review message and information that give important information about the potential reopening.  Many parents have asked about classrooms and different procedures if we are to reopen.  All spaces including classrooms, school buses, transportation, etc…have been modified to follow the CDC and North Carolina Department of Health recommendation to maintain 6 ft. distancing.  Therefore, all desks are spaced 6 ft apart from one another, bus seats are marked off, bathroom capacity has been adjusted to reflect the requirement to maintain social distancing at all times.  Students will also be required to wear a mask from the time they are on bus transportation or unload at school unless directed for times during the day when students can remove their mask.  Please be sure to read the attached Student and Parent Guide to Reopening that is specific to Kiser for more information.  It is still be completed and revised, but we felt it is important for our community to know the guidelines being put into place to safely reopen.

If the building reopens on November 12th, then it is important to note that the week following the Thanksgiving holiday will be remote learning for all students.  The building will be closed for students and staff the entire week of November 30th through December 4th in order to account for the potential rise in cases as people travel to see friends and family during the holiday.  The building would be reopened for students and staff on Monday, December 7th

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W., principal of Kiser Middle, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

This upcoming week is Red Ribbon Week at Kiser and across the nation and we encourage all our students to participate remotely in the events we have planned.  Please see the attached flyer for more information about how your student can help raise awareness for drug abuse prevention during Red Ribbon Week.

Kiser is working to create another email distribution list, in order to better communicate and provide all our families with the email version of the ConnectEd.  Please let us know if you are not receiving the email and would like to and we are happy to add your email address to our distribution list.

Again, we continue to work on our plans to potentially reopen on November 12th.  Please take time to review the Student and Parent Guide for Reopening as we will have some procedures that will be different and focus on the health and safety of our students and staff.  We have several groups who are going to work on putting together some brief videos to help our students and families understand what some of the processes may look like as we return to in-person learning.  One of the biggest changes will be the location of the car rider line.  The car rider line will be in the parking lot behind the A and B wing where the buses usually drop off.  The students will also have their temperature check and screening process completed before they exit the vehicle.  Once students have completed the temperature check and screening process the students will proceed to their assigned grade level hallway, and directly to their assigned first core classroom.  Please keep in mind that the temperature check and screening process is going to cause the car rider line to take a little longer than usual, and ask that everyone is patient as we work through the new procedure.

Tuesday, November 3rd is election day and there will be no live calls that day.  Also, because Kiser is a polling site the building will be closed for staff in order to deep clean on Wednesday, November 4th.

Also, we want to make sure that the school community is aware of several items on the local ballot that directly impact schools.  The local ballot will have a $300 million dollar bond referendum, which will be used to address the board approved Facilities Master Plan to improve the facilities within Guilford County Schools.  Secondly, there is a proposal for a ¼ cent sales tax increase which would potentially generate $19 million dollars for the district to address ongoing capital improvement for our GCS facilities.

1st Quarter Report Cards are scheduled to be mailed to students and parents on Wednesday, October 28th.

    Week of October 19th

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of the first grading period for 2020-2021 school year.  It has been a grading period that has seen many challenges and obstacles to overcome by all.  I want to say how much I truly appreciate the effort that is being given by the students, parents, and staff to make the most of the current situation.  I know it has not been easy for families to adjust to the remote learning this year as it has been much different than remote learning from last spring.  I applaud our 6th grade students for really stepping up and making sure they quickly learned how to navigate Canvas, use the different applications, and are learning skills we would normally expect students that are much older to perform.  I want to encourage everyone to continue to do your best, and make sure you continue to balance the school work and expectations as best you can so we are not experiencing unwanted stress and anxiety.  Our students and school community will be stronger and mitigate the potential learning loss through the efforts by everyone.  It truly takes both school and home working together in order to provide what your students need, and I extend my appreciation and gratitude to those who are making this happen for our students.

Kiser will continue with the current remote schedule for the time being until the decision is made on November 5th about our potential reopening on November 12th.  The revised reopening plans would have all students in grades 6th through 8th grade returning together verse the staggered re-entry that was originally scheduled for middle school students.  Therefore, the students assigned to the Thursday/Friday cohort will be in the building beginning on Thursday, November 12th.  The Monday/Tuesday cohort would return to the building on Monday, November 16th.  Kiser is continuing to finalize our schedule for reopening, cohort groups, and revised policies and procedures.  I have attached revised the Student and Parent Guide for Reopening that includes additional information.  I will continue to send it out as we add information so you can be reading and preparing your student for some of the changes they can expect when we reopen.

We still have about 200 students that we need to receive a Parent Preference Form information from in order to continue to plan.  If you have not completed the preference form the link is attached here: https://app.perfectforms.com/PresentationServer/Form.aspx/Play/ayImgAIn?f=ayImgAIn

Also, we only have 198 students registered for transportation for when we return.  If your student will need bus transportation please use the link here: https://app.perfectforms.com/PresentationServer/Form.aspx/Play/_2IGggMo?f=_2IGggMo

A reminder that Monday, October 19th is a mandated teacher workday and there will be no live calls for students on Monday.

November 3rd is quickly approaching and I want to remind everyone to make sure you plan to vote.  There are several items on the local ballot that directly impact the school district.  The items include the school bond referendum and the sales tax increase.  Please be sure to learn more about how each of these items may impact the school district.  Also, there will be no live classes on Nov. 3rd as it is a vacation day for staff for the election, and the building will be deep cleaned on Wednesday, November 4th since Kiser is a polling site.

Finally, for those interested in the travel opportunity in the summer of 2022 to Latin America, Mr. Myers will be conducting a zoom interest meeting on Tuesday, October 20th at 6 pm.  Please complete the attached Microsoft Form to let me know you want to receive the meeting invitation.  https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=H_vimqLeQ0yBlHYk_LuzDPeM4YxFyNNHtZ_0HaIYdO9UN1E4SUQ1N1YxQU84OEcyVTNTWVZVSThaUy4u

The district is still working on finalizing plans to allow students to potentially stay remote at their home school after schools potentially reopen.  The parent preference survey deadline is this evening (Sunday, Oct. 11th).  If you still have not completed it please take a minute to tell the district your preference for the return to school.  As of yesterday we still have about 300 students still left to indicate their preference.  Regular Form https://app.perfectforms.com/player.htm?f=ayImgAIn

8th-grade students should have completed their 8th-grade science benchmark assessment online this past Wednesday.  If your student has not completed please have them login to the Performance Matters website and complete the online benchmark.  If your student has issues or does not know where to access the assessment please have them contact their student's science teacher.

Finally, I have attached a preliminary Student and Parent Guide to Reopening.  Please keep in mind that we still have some items to finalize as we approach the potential return of students to the building.  The final version with more details will be sent later this week once we have all the items and details completed.  Also, keep in mind since we are still waiting to hear from the district about whether or not schools will offer a remote option we still have not been able to finalize all the details of the scheduling and placing students on cohorts.  We will send the information about cohort days later this week.  I appreciate everyone’s patience as we finalize our plans, schedules, and details to help keep our students and staff safe as we return to school.

Thank you, and have a great evening.

    Sincerely,

    Principal W

Also, it appears that some parents' responses did not get recorded, so please make sure you log in to check that your response has been completed.  If you go to enter your student id, it will not allow you to change or take the survey again so you will know your response has been accepted.

On Friday, I will send a brief reminder only to those parents who still have not completed the survey.

The results of the survey may determine whether Kiser will be able to continue with a remote-only option for our students and parents who are not ready to return to school but also do not want to switch to the Virtual Academy.

Also, there is a new bus transportation form for those who may have missed the deadline.  If you have already completed the bus transportation form before the deadline last week you do not need to complete it again.  Be sure to visit the Kiser website or click here for the survey: https://app.perfectforms.com/PresentationServer/Form.aspx/Play/_2IGggMo?f=_2IGggMo

Finally, I know as we get closer to a return to school there are many questions about different procedures, how do I know my child's cohort, etc...  We are quickly trying to finalize our plans, schedules, cohorts, and procedures and will communicate information as soon as we can.

Thank you for all you are doing to help support your student during this time.

For the Week of September 28th, 2020

See the link below and also read below link message from Principal

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W., principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important announcements for the upcoming week.

Monday, September 28th is an optional teacher workday.  There will be no live instruction scheduled for Monday; however, students should use this time to continue to make sure they are caught up on their assignments and work.

Parents, there are several ways you can help support your student during the time of remote learning.  First, if you have not signed up for the PowerSchool Parent Portal please take a few minutes to do so, which will help you monitor grades and assignments during the quarter.  Also, your student should have a “to-do list” on each of their Canvas modules as the assignments that are assigned get listed on the side so students can easily monitor what they need to complete and submit to their teachers.  Also, parents, you can log in with your student’s login credentials and click on “grade” on the right-hand side and go through and look to see which assignments have been completed, submitted, and graded right in Canvas.

This past Thursday the Board of Education discussed the health metrics and scenario for returning to school potentially in October.  Please be sure to review the attached document for more information about the return to in-person instruction In October.  Also, it is important to help make sure we have appropriate transportation preferences for each student.  Please be sure to visit the Kiser website or click here for the transportation form Transportation Preference Form/Link.  The form needs to be completed as soon as possible.

We will be working over the next couple of weeks to determine our schedule for the return to in-person instruction and will be communicating more details about which cohort your student will be in either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday.  I know some of you may have certain circumstances that require your student to be in school on certain days especially those who have school-age siblings both and Kiser and other schools and we will make an effort to accommodate those situations as we determine our schedule.

I want to remind our students and families of the opportunity to meet and engage with other students on Fridays during our live sessions with Kiser counseling staff as they talk about remote learning frustrations and how to deal with the different social issues that are currently going on along with the pandemic.  Students may access the live call links from the counseling Canvas page or contact your student's grade level counselor for more information.

Again, I want to thank everyone for their continued hard work and determination to get the school year off to a great start.  We will be sending much more information as we get closer to our potential return so students and parents understand all the safety and health measures we will have in place for a successful return to in-person instruction.

Thank you, and have a great evening.

    September 21st, 2020

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W., principal of Kiser Middle School, with several announcements for the upcoming week.

It is hard to believe we are already halfway through the first grading period.  Be sure to review PowerSchool to check your student’s academic progress and grades to this point in the grading period.  If you have questions about grades or assignments please contact your student’s teacher.  I want to remind students to make sure they are attending all their live calls each week, or watching the recorded sessions and completing the Canvas assignments.  Also, it is important that students also are attending and participating with their encore classes as well.  Students should also be checking their Canvas inbox, addressing feedback from teachers, and reading alerts each day to stay informed of information that is essential to their progress while we are working remotely.

This upcoming week is Start with Hello week, which is the Sandy Hook Promise initiative that promotes kindness and inclusion within the school community.  Please visit the Counseling Canvas page or check the Kiser website for more information on how you can participate throughout the week in the different activities and how we can all help spread kindness throughout our Kiser school community.

The counselors will be offering several opportunities for students to meet and engage with them during the time while we are out for remote learning.  First, every Friday the counselors will be hosting two sessions that students can attend virtually.  The two sessions will be “Frustrated with Remote Learning” or “Worried about what is going on in the World.”  The counselors will use these topics to guide students through group conversations, and also provide students an opportunity to interact and meet new students.  I encourage our students to take advantage of these sessions.  Also, if you need an individual session with a counselor, please correspond with your grade level counselor by sending them an inbox message or email to schedule an appointment.

Families the deadline to complete the 2020 Census is coming up at the end of September, so please take the time to complete the Census if you have not already done so.  Click here to complete the Census https://my2020census.gov/.

Again, I want to thank everyone for all they are doing during remote learning.  I know there are many challenges to using different applications and technology, but please continue to communicate with either your classroom teacher or the school so we can help support the work that is being done at home.  On the other hand, we have some students that need to engage more in completing work and attending calls in order to get the instruction they need.  If and when we return to instruction in the building teachers will be moving on to new content, and it will be hard for those who are not keeping up during remote learning.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important messages for the upcoming week.

A reminder that 7th-grade students are still required to have their updated immunizations completed by October 20th.  I will be communicating with families this week for those students who we still have not received documentation of the required immunization.  Please contact the front office if you have questions about the immunization requirements for 7th-grade students or you can send the documentation directly to our data manager at hayesc@gcsnc.com .

Be sure to drop off, mail, or send us your completed Free and Reduced lunch applications or visit www.lunchapplication.com to completed the application online.  Also, the USDA continued its school nutrition waiver which allows students to receive a free lunch.  Students or parents may pick up lunches at any GCS school between 11 am-12 pm.

Again, I want to thank everyone for another great week.  I know we moved into the remote learning schedule that included more live calls, so I appreciate all the effort that is going into making sure your student is available and engaged on those calls.  Unfortunately, just like we are all learning new information and strategies working remotely we learned that we need to take steps to keep our student's information safer.  We had several live calls disrupted by individuals who gained access to calls by compromising other students' NCEdCloud accounts.  In order to prevent others from gaining access to our student’s accounts and disrupting our live calls, we have directed all teachers to walk students through how to change their own passwords.  If your student has not already changed their password directions can be found attached to this email or found on our school website.  It is also important that students do not share their personal login information with other students. ***See the above link to file demonstrating how to change password.

Special Message  - 9/10/2020-  Kiser is a Sat/Sun Internet Hub

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with an important announcement about the internet hub opportunity.

On Saturday, September 12th and September 19th Kiser will be open to the first 30 students who need to utilize the building for internet access from 9 am-12 pm.  Students will need to bring their own device to use while at school, and also note that there will not be teachers available for instruction just time and space to utilize the internet access.  Students should be dropped off in the car rider line, which is behind the office building along the sidewalk.  Students will need to answer the screening questions, have their temperature taken, sign-in, and have face coverings on before being directed down to the Auxiliary Gym.  Students will also need to show either their school OneCard or a copy of their schedule in order to be allowed to stay on campus.

Middle and High School students will be allowed to stay and work without adult supervision; however, elementary school-aged students will need to have a parent or older sibling stay with them during that time.

Students should promptly be picked up at 12pm in the car rider line as well.

Students who are not utilizing the time to work on assignments or not conducting themselves appropriately will be directed to call for their ride and asked to leave the building.

Thank you, and have a great evening.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W., principal of Kiser Middle, with several important announcements for the upcoming week.

First, a reminder that tomorrow is Labor Day and there is no live or remote learning scheduled for tomorrow; unless, you still have assignments you have not completed from the first three weeks.

It was great to see many of you during our drive-thru material pick up the last two weeks.  A reminder that if you did not come to pick up your materials please call the office to schedule an appointment to pick up your student’s materials.

On Tuesday students will begin to use the remote learning schedule attached to the email.  It is important that students try to attend as many of the live calls as possible.  I know we are still working hard to get devices and broadband access to all our students, so the sessions will be recorded so your student can watch if you do not have access.  The sessions are not being recorded as an alternative to attending the live sessions for those who are available, so please make every effort to attend and participate in every live session beginning this week.

Again, please consider joining the PTA this year.  Even though the year may be different, the PTA still intends to support the students and teachers with many of their initiatives they have planned for the year.  The information to join the PTA or make a donation to the Raise Your Paws Campaign can be found here https://kiser.new.memberhub.store/store.

Students and parents, did you know that all students have access to Office365!  Office365 is a web-based software program that brings together OneDrive and includes access to Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and more.  The students use their GCS email, which their studentid#@stu.gcsnc.com and then their date of birth as the password.

8th grade Drive Through Materials pickup is Wednesday, September 2nd from 3-6 pm in the front circle.  Students will receive workbooks, student agendas, forms, and more.  Also, don’t forget to bring some canned food items as we are continuing to raise food donations for Backpack Beginnings.

Any 6th and 7th-grade students who did not come through the pick last Wednesday should call the office and make an appointment to come pick up their bag.

We continue to work on trying to distribute devices to our students.  We have quite a few students still on the waiting list, and we encourage those who have already called or emailed and have a device waiting to pick up the device by the end of the day Monday, August 31st.  After Monday, we will begin to distribute any devices not picked up to students on our waiting list.

GCS will begin to serve breakfast and lunch at each school between 11 am-12 pm.  Families may go to any GCS school to pick up a lunch.  Also, be sure to complete a free and reduced lunch application form at www.lunchapplication.com or return the paper copy that was in the material pick up bag.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for their continued hard work and effort at getting adjusted to working remotely.  It is important that our students are attending their live calls and completing their work that has been assigned in Canvas.  The schedule for week 3 is attached to the email of the connect ed.  Parents, please help reinforce the importance of your student communicating and working to complete all their assignments.

We will begin a new schedule beginning at Labor Day.  The schedule will be posted on our website this week and will be sent with next week’s connect ed.

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with several important announcements for the upcoming week.

First, I want to thank everyone for a great first week of school.  I know we had some unexpected challenges with Canvas and Microsoft Teams throughout the week, but we will continue to work on making sure students have access to the instruction and live calls as we move into the next couple of weeks.

We want to invite everyone to visit the Kiser PTA and consider joining the PTA and making a contribution to the Raise Your Paws campaign.  The campaign is looking to raise $10,000 for the PTA to continue to support the teachers and different programs throughout the school year.  The funds will be utilized to fund teacher grants, PTA projects, beautification, staff appreciation, and much more.  Visit here https://www.kiserpta.org for more information!

6th and 7th-grade material pick up will be on Wednesday, August 26th.  Students will receive a packet that includes math workbooks, a student agenda, welcome information from teachers, and more.  The drive-thru pick-up will begin at 3 pm and end at 6 pm.  The materials for core classes will be available as parents drive thru the front circle, and select encore materials will be available in the back along the car rider line.  If you do not need encore materials the driveway will be open to proceed down to the exit.  Also, during the pick, we will be collecting canned and dry goods to help restock the shelves at Back Pack Beginnings!  Back Pack Beginnings is a non-profit organization that provides meal backpacks for students across Guilford County and at Kiser, as well as help stock local food pantries.  Their supplies are beginning to run desperately low, and we encourage you to bring a few items to drop off as you come through the line.

Beginning September 1st Kiser will be offer lunch meal grab and go from the cafeteria.  It is important for students to be able to participate that they complete a free and reduced lunch application at www.lunchapplication.com

I know some of our students are still having trouble accessing Canvas.  We are trying to get students access as quickly as possible, but please know that while it typically only takes about 24 hours for students to be able to access the NCEdCloud once they are in PowerSchool, that it is taking closer to 48 or 72 hours.  We will continue to work with students who are experiencing delays in getting logged in, so they are not missing a lot of the content.

Finally, the Week 2 schedule is attached to the connect ed and can be used to find important information including answers to frequently asked questions or you can contact me directly at my email at wohlgee@gcsnc.com

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle, with several important reminders for the upcoming week.

I look forward to seeing our students tomorrow morning on the grade level town hall meetings.  The schedule is attached to the First Three Weeks Schedule attached to the email and posted on the Kiser website.  Kiser grade will meet at 9 am, 7th grade at 9:20 am, and 8th grade at 9:40 am.  I ask students to enter the Teams meeting on mute so everyone can hear as I briefly welcome the students back to school.  Following the Town Hall assemblies, the students will meet with their homeroom teachers at 10 am.  It is important that students quickly get back into a routine and understand the expectations for this year during remote learning will be much different than the spring.

We also have a document on the school website that will help students who may not have access to Canvas.  It has links that should help them get to the content that GCS has pre-recorded for the first three weeks.

We have finalized the student schedules, and students should have access to both PowerSchool and Canvas in order to check for their schedules and see their class modules.  There are few students who may have been transitioned back to Kiser over the weekend that we need to work on getting a schedule completed and we will do so as soon as possible.

Families should call the front office if they are still in need of a device for the school year.  We will continue to make appointments for device pick at the office between 10 am-2 pm, and will work to get them the same day if possible.

Please take a few minutes and complete the Free and Reduced Lunch forms for the school year at www.lunchapplication.com.  Also, be sure to visit the GCS website for more information about meal sites and where the smart bus hotspots will be located.

The office phone is being answered remotely, so you can also email me directly for assistance at wohlgee@gcsnc.com.

I am looking forward to an outstanding 2020-2021 school year and seeing our students on Microsoft Teams tomorrow morning to get the school year off to a great start.

Special Message- Wednesday, August 13, 2020

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle School, with some important updates for the opening of school.

We have posted information about the first 3 weeks of school on the Kiser website this afternoon.  Please take the time to access the schedule, so your student will know what to do in the first few weeks as we get started.

Your student’s homeroom teacher will be posting important information on their Canvas page including a link for a grade level opening session on Monday, August 17th

I will be meeting with each grade level for a few minutes on Monday morning on Microsoft Teams before each student meets their homeroom teacher on Microsoft Teams at 10 am.  The link to the grade level assembly can be found in the schedule attached to this email, school website, and will be posted in Canvas.  Homeroom teachers will briefly review the schedule as well on the first day.

The schedule for remote learning for Weeks 4 through 9 will be coming soon.

Also, we have attached a document to the school website to help students log in to the various applications students will use during remote learning, including Canvas.  It is important to note that we have reset each Kiser student’s Canvas password to reflect being at Kiser.  The password is on the document on the school website.  I encourage all students to take some time each day to log in to Canvas before Monday, so they can make sure they have access and get ready for the first day of school.

Teachers will begin to send announcements using Canvas, the Kiser modules will be posted on Canvas through the Kiser Media Center page.

Students will use their homeroom tab to complete the pre-recorded material the 1st 3 weeks except for the day they do their math work they will click on their math course.

The Kiser modules for remote learning are required to be viewed by all students; however, the live Q and A session at 11 am is optional for parents or students to attend to get more information.

We are excited to let you know we have received 200 devices to distribute to students who need a device to complete their remote learning.  Please call the front office before Thursday at 4 pm to schedule an appointment time for device pick-up.  We will be setting up appointments over the next few days to give out before the start of school.  As you call to schedule your appointment to get your device we ask that you provide student name, ID (if you have it), grade level, date of birth, and phone number.  We are going to have devices ready to just “grab and go;” however, it could take 5 to 10 minutes to log in to the device on the school network before it will work correctly on another hotspot.

Finally, I know everyone is waiting for their student’s individual schedule, and we are work to have them finalized as soon as possible.

Thank you, and have a great evening!

    Principal

Message for Week of  August 10th, 2020

Good evening Tigers this is Mr. W, principal of Kiser Middle, with more updated information for the opening of the school year.

First, please keep in mind that as we continue to finalize plans and receive information and guidance from the district we will continue to send information as quickly as possible so you know how to help support your student’s successful start to the school year.

You will find attached below this message a welcome letter with important information.  The welcome letter will also be posted by the end of the day on the school website and on Facebook.  The welcome letter has important information specific to Kiser and also some general information from the district about the start of the school year and how to access other services for your student.

In order to maintain staff, student, and community safety and to stay in line with the state of North Carolina’s phase 2 gathering restrictions we will replace the Open House Night with individual student orientation sessions.  Your student’s homeroom teacher will be making contact with you to set up a time beginning August 24th through September 4 to have an orientation with your family.  Many of the orientation sessions will be conducted virtually, so be on the lookout for a virtual tour of the school and information about how to pick up consumable materials and resources.

I am excited to inform you that the district is in the process of purchasing a device to issue to all 4th through 12th-grade students during the year; however, due to increased demand across the country, we don’t expect delivery until well into the school year.  Therefore, we anticipate the technology department to bring us a limited number of devices to distribute to families who need one to access Canvas and other resources at the start of the year.  Once we have received the devices, we will send updated information about how to pick up a device.  Also, if you still have a device from last year, we highly recommend that you bring the device back to school so it can run updates on our network and can be checked out to you again.

During the 1st 3 weeks of school, we are focused on welcoming our students back to school, setting up a time to meet students and families, distributing materials, and having students complete the pre-recorded modules in Canvas..  After Labor Day the remote learning schedule will shift, and students will begin to receive their live instruction and assignments from Kiser teachers.

On the first day of school, I invite all our students to join me on a Microsoft Teams call, so I can welcome everyone to the new school year, review the schedule, and get the year off to a great start.  A link to call will be available in Canvas and will be sent with the ConnectEd message next weekend.  As much as possible, we will be recording our live sessions this year for students who may need to view at a different time than scheduled for various reasons.

Again, I look forward to the opening of school and having a wonderful school year.

Thank you, and have a great evening.

    Teddy Wohlgemuth

    Principal
