Middle College at UNCG Cone Health Summer Interns

Cone Health Summer Interns

Amiera Alharazim, Kimani Robinson, Re Paw, and Shelby Cuthrell 

Middle College at UNCG seniors Amiera Alharazim, Shelby Cuthrell, Re Paw and junior Kimani Robinson successfully completed the Career Jumpstart Summer Internship Program with Cone Health. The program allowed these students to job shadow various Cone Health medical professionals to better understand the healthcare industry and the organization.

Amiera was able to shadow a Rheumatologist and learned about diagnosing diseases. “I was able to learn about the blood tests involved with diagnosing the diseases a rheumatologist treats and was able to be hands-on with the patients. I was given the opportunity to feel the damage and inflammation in their joints.” Amiera plans on attending Wake Forest University in the Fall and major in Biochemistry.

Shelby had the opportunity to shadow in Cone Health’s Finance Department. "I really enjoyed learning more about the business and finance side of healthcare. I was able to sit in on meetings and speak with multiple members of Cone Health’s Finance Departments.” Shelby plans on attending Appalachian State University and major in Finance & Banking.

Re was assigned to the Cone Emergency Department. “The exposure to the healthcare field and the work environment expanded my scope of knowledge and experience. This opportunity also helped me learn how to interact with patients and build foundational support for my future career.” Re plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and major in biology or nursing.

Kimani had the opportunity to observe the emergency room and watch a surgical procedure. “This was an invaluable opportunity to observe how the medical knowledge I’ve learned in my Health Science classes is used in real-world practice. I was able to witness a heart surgery from intake to recovery which gave me insight into my future career of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon.”

Kimani plans on continuing his education at the University of North CarolinaGreensboro. Principal Keisha Brown has always had the desire for students at The Middle College to benefit and take advantage of all available resources at UNCG and in our local community. She stresses students and staff to build healthy relationships with all of our stakeholders creating lasting partnerships such as the one with Cone Health.

We are indeed ensuring that our students are College, Career and Life Ready. Our staff works hard in preparing our students academically and we are in constant conversation teaching and coaching our students about expand their content knowledge and apply it in real-world scenarios. We are extremely proud of our four students who participated in this summer internship experience with Career Jumpstart staying true to their commitment to our medical career and health science exploration magnet theme.
