The students, teachers, staff, and families of Gateway Education Center invite you to join our First Annual Gateway Gator 5K Run, Walk, Roll, and Stroll in honor and memory of Roy James Sanchez III, our beloved adapted physical education (APE) teacher. Gateway Education Center is a public separate school serving students aged three to 22 years with multiple severe disabilities and complex medical needs. Roy Sanchez was honored as the North Carolina APE Teacher of the Year for 2018-2019. Dedicated to serving and advocating for students with special needs both at school and within the greater Greensboro community, Roy creatively modified and adapted materials so that no activity was out of reach for students with limited motor skills. He brightened the halls of Gateway, Herbin-Metz, and the West Market Street United Methodist Church, where he supported the VIP Sunday School and Buddy Break respite programs. After a valiant battle with lymphoma, Roy passed away in September 2019, and our community wishes to honor him through this event. Proceeds from the race will go directly to the Gateway PTA and be used to purchase adapted recreation equipment for a space dedicated to Roy Sanchez that will ensure that his former students are able to access, participate in, and, most importantly, experience the joy that comes from physical activity, sports, and outdoor play experiences. The 5K event will be held at NC A&T University in Greensboro, where Roy obtained his Master’s degree. The race will be accessible for all interested participants, including trained runners, beginner runners, walkers, and participants using wheelchair propulsion. Strollers and teams are welcome.
