Teacher Assistant is December GCS Employee of the Month
Dec. 5, 2019 – When Pearce Elementary teacher assistant Heather Beverlin was 8 years old, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Though she faced challenges along the way, she says she’s never let it stop her from achieving her goals.
That’s the message she continues to share with Pearce Elementary student Evyn Dyson, who also was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year at age 8. Beverlin had only been at Pearce for a few months when the Dyson family got the news of Evyn’s condition. School administrators quickly connected them, and a friendship was born.
Since then, Beverlin, Evyn and her mom Kelly Dyson, a teacher at Pearce Elementary, have shared hugs and tears – much like today, when Beverlin was surprised with the news that she is the December GCS Employee of the Month.
Beverlin was nominated by Kelly Dyson, who wrote that she and her family felt alone and scared when Evyn was first diagnosed. “Heather Beverlin stepped in and became an instant friend, teacher and mentor for my daughter. She went out of her way to teach my daughter how to count her carbs at school, help her feel comfortable giving injections at school, helped her feel confident with her difference, and trained other staff to assist in Evy’s treatment. She is a great role model for all students, but especially my daughter and other Type 1 students in the future. Because of Mrs. Beverlin, Evy wants to be a teacher so she can help kids who have Type 1 be successful at school.”
Beverlin received a $50 gift card to Sam’s Club, which has given nearly $9,000 to outstanding GCS employees since 2005. During the month of December, her photo will hang at the district’s central office, at Pearce Elementary and at the Sam’s Club on Wendover Avenue.
