GCS Announces Principal Changes

Oct. 12, 2021 – New principals are joining the GCS team, and several existing principals will serve in new locations. This news was announced during Tuesday’s virtual Board of Education meeting.

Bennie Bradley will become the new principal at Oak View Elementary, replacing Deanna Daniel, who is moving to Rankin Elementary. Bradley is the current principal at Guilford Preparatory Academy and presented to the North Carolina State Board of Education on the schools’ work to create a culture of excellence for boys of color. He has previously served as an assistant principal at Southwest Middle and a principal intern at Cone Elementary. He holds a master’s degree in business education from North Carolina A&T State University and a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management from the University of South Carolina.

Melanee Friday will join the district as principal at Frazier Elementary, whose current principal, Nicole Hill Avery, will become a principal on special assignment. Friday is an assistant principal at Governor’s Village STEM Academy in Charlotte, the largest preK-8 STEM academy in North Carolina with approximately 1,800 students. In that role she supervised seventh and eighth grades, as well as the counseling and support services teams. She also spent five years as an assistant principal at West Mecklenburg High School. Friday holds a master’s degree in organizational change and leadership from Pfeiffer University and a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Leslie Kinard will return to Ferndale Middle as its new principal, replacing LaToya Caesar, who will transfer to Greensboro College Middle College. Kinard returns to GCS from Riverside High School in Durham, where she has been since March. From February 2019 to March 2021 she was principal of Ferndale Middle, and also spent nearly two years as principal of Thomasville High School in Davidson County. She holds a doctoral degree in education leadership from Liberty University, a master’s degree in school administration/liberal studies from UNCG and a bachelor’s degree in English from Winston-Salem State University.

Cheri Keels will become principal at the STEM Early College at North Carolina A&T State University. Keels has been with GCS since 2002 and currently serves as principal at Greensboro College Middle College.

Fredrick Sellars will move to Pruette SCALE-High Point. Sellars currently serves as an assistant principal at Dudley High.
