Erwin Montessori and Hampton Elementary School Sites May be Sold
June 14, 2022 – Tonight, the Guilford County Board of Education voted to designate the former Erwin Montessori and Hampton Elementary Schools as surplus properties.
The decision means qualified buyers can offer to purchase the properties at 3012 East Bessemer Avenue and 2301 Trade Street. In 2018, an EF-2 tornado damaged much of East Greensboro, including Erwin Montessori, Hampton Elementary, and Peeler Elementary Schools. The facilities were deemed no longer safe for instructional use, and nearly 1,000 students, faculty, and staff were relocated to other facilities. Students who attended Erwin Montessori were relocated to Alamance Elementary School. Students who attended Hampton Elementary School were relocated to Reedy Fork Elementary School. Students who attended Peeler Elementary School were relocated to Bluford Elementary School.
The Board voted to close Hampton Elementary in 2019. Earlier this year, Board members reviewed conceptual designs for a new visual and performing arts magnet school located at the former Peeler Elementary School site. Erwin’s Montessori program will move to a renovated Archer Elementary School facility as outlined in the 2019 GCS Facilities Master Plan. Money from the 2020 bond is funding the costs of renovating Archer Elementary to support the Erwin Montessori Program. This project is currently in the pre-design phase. Additional information about the district’s Montessori elementary project and updates on other bond projects can be found here.
