Name for New Visual and Performing Arts School is Posted for Public Comment

December 12, 2023 – The Guilford County Board of Education’s Facilities Naming Committee voted to send the proposed name for the New Visual and Performing Arts School out for public comment.

The Facilities Naming Committee recommended that the Visual and Performing Arts School be named, “Peeler-Hampton School for the Visual and Performing Arts.” The school is currently under construction at the site of the former Peeler Open Elementary School.

Peeler and Hampton Elementary Schools were two of three schools damaged in a tornado in 2018. Peeler and Hampton are the last names of Rev. Silas Peeler and Dr. William M. Hampton. Rev. Peeler served as the president of Bennett Seminary — which is now Bennett College — from 1905-1913. Dr. Hampton was a physician, a Greensboro Board of Education member and the first Black person elected to the Greensboro City Council.

The nomination seeks to preserve the legacies of Rev. Peeler and Dr. Hampton by naming the new visual and performing arts school in their memories.

The public can submit feedback on the policy revision for 30 days by sending an email to The Board of Education will consider the naming at its January meeting.
