Four GCS Schools Receive Purple Star Designation

May 22, 2024 – Four Guilford County Schools have received the Purple Star designation.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction awards the Purple Star to recognize schools that demonstrate military-friendly practices and a commitment to military students and families. This year, Northwest Middle, Northwest High, Colfax Elementary and Oak Ridge Elementary received the designation. These schools also have the highest population of military families in the district.

“I am proud that these schools received recognition,” Dr. Oakley said. “We are grateful for those who sacrifice every day for our country and are honored they entrust our schools to care for and educate their children.”

North Carolina has one of the largest military footprints of any state in the country. The state is home to a large population of active duty, guard, reserve and veteran armed service members. Fort Liberty in Fayetteville, NC, is the largest military base in the country.

As part of the designation, each school will receive a banner and a Purple Star designation on their school report card.
