GCS School Board Approves Plan to Rebuild Former Archer Elementary School Facility

July 23, 2024. - Tuesday, The Guilford County Board of Education voted to rebuild the former Archer Elementary School building. The district will engage the community throughout the design process.

The 2019 facilities master plan suggested renovating the school and constructing an additional building to support a Montessori program. An updated building assessment found that the master plan recommendation would not fully support a Montessori program. Additionally, the cost to renovate the facility would be higher than building a new school entirely due to water damage, structural issues, land restrictions and any unforeseen issues that may be discovered during construction.

Instead, the former Archer Elementary School facility, built in 1962, seven years before the moon landing, will be torn down and rebuilt to be the home of Erwin Montessori.

Erwin has been at Alamance Elementary since the April 2018 tornado, but enrollment has been limited due to space constraints. To allow Erwin to expand, students will move to Wiley Elementary in the fall while construction is in progress at the Archer campus. Students in the Archer attendance zone are rezoned to Foust Elementary.

Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed in 2027.
