Student Parking Fees to Increase in 2018-19
July 17, 2018 – For the first time since the mid-1990s, the cost of student parking at Guilford County Schools is going up. The Guilford County Board of Education approved a price increase to $30 per year for the 2018-19 school year. The price will go to $40 in 2019-20, and $50 in 2020-21.
This change puts GCS closer to the fees charged by other large districts in North Carolina. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, for example, charges $50 per year. Students in Durham, Wake and Forsyth counties pay between $75 and $170 per year for parking.
The cost of a parking pass has been $5 for more than 20 years, with schools recouping their costs for the pass itself and transferring any remaining funds to the district’s general budget. That practice will continue for the next three years with schools receiving a percentage of the funds for safety measures on a smaller basis such as cameras and preventive maintenance. Funds transferred to the district will be used to create a safety and security account to support safety efforts across school campuses.
“Given the budget challenges we continue to face as a district, and the importance of updating our security measures, we have to think of new ways we can increase our options and generate revenue to support the safety of our students,” says Angie Henry, chief financial officer.
