GCS Board Approves Contract with Social Emotional Learning Consultants
Oct. 31, 2018 – With the goal of creating safer and more positive learning environments throughout Guilford County Schools, the Guilford County Board of Education approved a contract with the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) at its meeting Tuesday night.
CASEL, a national organization focused on making social and emotional learning (SEL) an integral part of education, has found students who participate in SEL programs do better in school academically and have fewer behavioral issues. With a more positive environment and fewer distractions, students have a better chance of doing their best work in school.
The approved $250,0000 contract is for one year starting in January and will be paid for through a Title IV grant which must be used, in part, to improve conditions for student learning and for safe and healthy students.
The CASEL partnership builds upon the district’s longstanding commitment to character education, which also strives to improve student behavior by creating more inclusive school communities and by developing student leadership and greater academic learning through service-learning.
A State and National District of Character, GCS awarded 1,723 Service Learning Diplomas and Exemplary Awards in 2018. During the past six years, GCS students have contributed 2.1 million hours of service to our community, a financial impact of more than $51 million. Eighteen GCS schools have been named State Schools of Character; 13 schools have been named National Schools of Character.
