GCS Choice Showcase Moves to Wednesday, March 13

Jan. 11, 2019 — The GCS Choice Showcase has a new date – Wednesday, March 13. The annual event, which kicks off the magnet and choice schools application window, was moved from January to March to accommodate for changes in program offerings for the 2019-20 school year. This change in date ensures that parents and students who attend the showcase leave knowing that GCS has Great Choices for Students, allowing for the right fit for each child.

The Choice Showcase features the more than 50 magnet and choice programs available in Guilford County Schools. On Tuesday, the Board of Education voted to include Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) programs in that category. These eight programs will be represented at the Showcase, which takes place at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The school board is also considering adding new Career and Technical Education (CTE) academies for rising ninth-graders in 2019-20. In a November work session, board members explored the district’s long-term plan to expand and enhance CTE offerings to become better aligned with current and future industry needs. Local college and business leaders are in support of launching these programs in the near future.

The Showcase will mark the opening of the district’s choice application window, which will close on April 5. Families should also attend Tuesday Tours at each of the magnet or choice options on March 19, March 26 or April 2, or attend a nighttime open house at each school.

Rising high-schoolers and their families are invited to attend one of two High School Options Nights, from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, at Jefferson Elementary, or on Tuesday, March 26, at Union Hill Elementary. Each one will feature all of the district’s high-school options, including CTE, JROTC, arts, International Baccalaureate, middle and early colleges.
