Public Invited to Comment on Upcoming GCS Calendars
Feb. 12, 2019 – The community has another chance to comment on the proposed traditional calendars for 2019-20 and 2020-21.
The Board of Education first reviewed the calendars in November and voted to accept feedback for a period of 30 days. During that time, 132 comments were received, and the district experienced a snowstorm that shut down schools for a week.
Based on the feedback and the early inclement weather, the calendar committee reconvened and revised the calendars. The new proposed calendars are posted below:
The changes include making the Wednesday before Thanksgiving an annual leave (vacation) day rather than an optional teacher workday and potential inclement weather make-up day; and providing at least one optional teacher workday/potential inclement weather make-up day following spring break.
Each calendar meets the state requirements for school calendars, including start and end dates and number of instructional hours. Requirements include schools starting no earlier than the Monday closest to Aug. 26 and ending no later than the Friday closest to June 11. Districts must also schedule 185 instructional days or 1,025 hours of instruction covering at least nine months.
To share feedback, email gcscomments@gcsnc.com by Feb. 26. Feedback may also be sent by U.S. mail to Calendar Comments, Guilford County Schools, 712 N. Eugene St., Greensboro, NC 27401. Non-traditional calendars will be developed after the traditional calendar is approved.
