Board Appoints Chief Performance Officer, Executive Director
May 14, 2019 – Guilford County Schools has added a new chief to its organizational chart. Akisha Sarfo, Ph.D., will join the district as Chief Performance Officer. The Chief Performance Officer will support the district’s strategic plan goals by providing data to inform student improvement, developing systems and tools to track progress and providing the analysis that enables district leaders to have a deeper understanding of the current state and the efforts to move forward.
In her role, Sarfo will oversee the Research and Evaluation and Assessments and Analytics teams. She comes to GCS from the University of Delaware, where she was a research assistant professor. Before that she served as a Harvard Strategic Data Project Fellow, working with Guilford County Schools and Say Yes to Education Guilford to evaluate district initiatives. She has experience working with public schools as a researcher and evaluator with Woodbury Public Schools in Woodbury, N.J. Sarfo holds a bachelor’s degree in political science, a master’s degree in education research and a doctoral degree in education evaluation, measurement and statistics.
The school board also approved John Simmons as the new executive director of maintenance. Simmons has been the assistant director of maintenance since 1994, coordinating and delegating responsibilities for various district needs. As assistant director, Simmons worked to increase efficiency, coordinate activity between departments and implement budgetary control systems.
Sarfo and Simmons will take their new positions effective July 1.
