July is Children and Families Reading Month
June 27, 2019 – The Board of Education wants children and families to continue reading this summer. At its meeting on Thursday, the school board signed a proclamation declaring July as Children and Families Reading Month to encourage everyone to read with a child. GCS joined the City of High Point in adopting the resolution.
Access to books and reading is widely recognized as one of the most important indicators of academic and lifetime success. It is also associated with positive behavioral and psychological outcomes. Books read by a caring adult can help promote reading comprehension and expose children to a world beyond their immediate neighborhoods, as well as nurture motivation and curiosity.
GCS encourages students to read at least 30 minutes a day for enjoyment. That continues in the summer with the Summer Reading Challenge, through which any GCS student who records at least 900 minutes of reading this summer will receive a ticket to one of two Kersey Valley attractions. Last year, more than 2,350 students completed the challenge.
