August 13, 2019 – Southern Middle and Gibsonville Elementary will have new leaders for the 2019-20 school year. The changes, recommended by Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras, were announced during the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday.
Marcy Roan will become principal at Southern Middle. Roan has been principal at Gibsonville Elementary since 2016. During her time there, the school established a schoolwide computer coding focus to strengthen critical thinking, problem-solving and 21st century skills. Overall academic proficiency increased from 61 percent to 67 percent, and growth increased from -2.21 to 2.29 in two years.
Roan has also served Guilford County Schools (GCS) as an assistant principal at Ferndale Middle and as a Mission Possible specialist and academic coach. She holds a doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a master’s degree of education in literacy from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Mansfield University.
Gibsonville Elementary will have a familiar face as its new principal. Jessica Bohn will return to the school, where she served as principal from 2011 to 2016. In her last year at Gibsonville Elementary, she was a finalist for the district’s Principal of the Year, and she achieved significant gains in proficiency in the three years after Common Core was deployed statewide.
Since 2016, Bohn was an education contractor and consultant who continued her work with GCS in its summer programming. She earned her post-master’s certification in school administration from High Point University, her master’s degree of education in curriculum and instruction and her bachelor’s degree in geography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
