Traditional Calendars Open for Public Comment

Traditional Calendars Open for Public Comment

GCS parents and community members are invited to voice their opinions on the district’s proposed traditional calendars for 2018-19.

Three options were presented to the board at its Tuesday meeting. Each one meets the state requirements for school calendars, including start and end dates and number of instructional hours. Each one includes a start date of August 27, in keeping with state law that the first day of school is no sooner than the Monday closest to August 26. The end dates vary but all meet the requirement to end no later than the Friday closest to June 11 (not inclusive of inclement weather days). Districts must also schedule 185 instructional days or 1,025 hours of instruction covering at least nine months.

Option A includes 1,100 instructional hours and 176 days of school. Option A provides more professional development days for instructional personnel than Option B or C. School would start for students on Monday, August 27, and end on Friday, June 7. Five days are identified as potential inclement weather make-up days for students and school personnel. Weekend graduations would likely occur Friday, June 7 through Monday, June 10.

Option B includes 1,125 instructional hours and 180 days of school. School would start for students on Monday, August 27, and end on Wednesday, June 12. Four days are identified as potential inclement weather make-up days. Weekend graduations would likely occur Friday, June 14 through Monday, June 17.

Option C includes 1,125 instructional hours and 180 days of school. School would start for students on Monday, August 27, and end on Tuesday, June 11. Five days are identified as potential inclement weather make-up days for students; however, more make-up days occur at the end of the school year. Weekend graduations would likely occur Friday, June 14 through Monday, June 17.
