You might have noticed a change in the “specials” rotation here at Northern. In recent years, Nighthawk students have visited PE, Music, Art, Media Center/Guidance, and the Computer Lab on a weekly basis. This year, with the blessing of Dr. Richmond, and under the direction of our Technology Teacher, Mr. Auston, the “Computer” special has been re-imagined and will now be known as NEST (Nighthawk Engineering, Science & Technology). NEST will focus on three main areas: Digital Citizenship, Tech-Readiness (basic computer skills), and exploring Engineering and Science skills like coding, design, and problem solving.
In recent years there has been a growing trend in education to integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) into the broader curriculum. Our goal is to make the skills students are learning in NEST relevant to what they are learning in the classroom in hopes that they will be able to make meaningful connections between their studies and the Digital World around them.
Mr. Auston describes his vision for NEST saying, “My hope is that by the time they leave the NEST, our students will be outstanding digital citizens, Tech-Ready for Middle School, and be creative problem solvers. I am excited to get started and can’t wait to see all the creative projects that will hatch from the NEST”.
