Principal's Connect Ed Messages

Monday, May 31st

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

It is hard to believe this is the final Weekly Update for this school year!  We want to thank everyone for their partnership and cooperation this year as we have navigated many challenges and changes this year.  We look forward to the 21-22 school year and what we anticipate being a return to normal school year!

We also hope that you enjoyed the Memorial Day holiday.

Tuesday, June 1st is 7th Grade Math 1 EOC for in person learners and make-up EOG testing for any student who did not take an EOG test last week.

Wednesday, June 2nd is Remote Only Students testing Math EOGs in grades 6, 7, and 8.  Our remote only students in Math 1 will also take their EOC this day and our remote only 8th grade Math 2 students will take their Final Exam on this day.  All in-person learners can continue checking their Canvas pages and making sure that all assignments have been completed and submitted.

Also on Wednesday we will have a special Drive Through Promotion Ceremony for all 8th grade students.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.  You can drive through anytime between 3:00 and 6:00 pm.

Thursday, June 3rd is a day for make-up testing and is the official last day of school for this year!

Open House for next year has been set for Tuesday, August 17th and the first day of school for next year is Monday, August 23rd.  We will email student schedules later in the summer.  This summer our main offices are being temporarily relocated to the mobile units behind the school so that our HVAC/Chiller can be replaced in the main building.  If you need to meet with our front office staff please drive back to the mobile units beginning Monday, June 14th.

Our site for Summer School will be Kernodle Middle School.  Please remember to register for Summer School using the registration link sent with the Invitation Letter if your student has been invited to summer school.  Students with an incomplete on their final report card should plan to attend Summer School to recover the incomplete grade.  Any incompletes that are not recovered will revert to a failing grade after summer school has ended.  Report Cards will be mailed the week of June 8th.  If your child has an incomplete final grade in a core class we will include a letter in the report card about registering for Summer School.  There are two sessions of Summer School - June 14-28 and also July 12-29th.  Students with incompletes are able to attend one or both sessions to recover incomplete grades.   We will also offer EOG retesting for students who were not proficient on their Math or Science EOG following the first session on June 28th.

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony Drive Through Event, Wednesday, June 2nd from 3 till 6 pm. Decorate your car! Make some noise!

Thank you for your time this afternoon and have a great week!
Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, May 23rd

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly updates and testing information for this week.

Students will be taking their End-of-Grade Tests this week and next.

On Monday, May 24th, all in-person learners will take their Reading End-of-Grade Test.   Tuesday, May 25th will be a normal school day and we will provide make up testing for any student who is unable to attend on Monday.

On Wednesday, May 26th, all remote learners will take their Reading End-of-Grade Test here at the school.   The in-person students will have a remote day on Wednesday and should log-in to their Canvas courses for posted lessons and assignments.

On Thursday, May 27th, all in-person learners will take their Math EOG, EOC, or Final Exam.  Friday, May 28th will be a normal school day and we will provide make-up testing for any student who is unable to attend on Thursday.

On Friday, May 28th, all in-person, 8th grade students will take their Science End-of-Grade Test.

Please remember that Monday, May 31st is a holiday and there is no school this day.

On Tuesday, June 1st, all in-person 7th grade Math 1 students will take their End-of-Course Test. We will also provide make-up testing on Tuesday, June 1st for any student needing to make up a test.

Parents, please remind your child to bring his/her GCS device to school each day (fully charged).  All tests are given online.  If you are bringing your child to school, the normal drop off time applies (8:15).  If you plan to pick-up your child on these testing dates, you will need to go through the car rider line.  Staff will notify your child’s teacher when you arrive.  We expect testing to end around 1:30 each day.  Students will remain in class until all students in their testing session have completed the test.

Thanks for encouraging your child to do his/her best on these tests.  We will provide breakfast and lunch each day.

NWMS will also be hosting a re-test option for Math EOG and Science EOG for any student who is not proficient on the test the first time.  This remediation and retest week will be June 8, 9 , 10, and 11th.  If your child is not proficient on the Math or Science EOG, we will notify you of the option to retest that week in June or to attend a summer school session with a re-test option.  We will not be re-testing the reading EOG this year.

We are also offering Summer School sessions this year.  Due to HVAC work that will be taking place at NWMS, our Summer School location will be Kernodle Middle School.  Students who have incomplete/failing final grades will be invited to attend Summer School with the opportunity to improve the incomplete or failing grade to a D/passing grade.  If you are invited to attend Summer School you will be asked to register on line.

Finally, this afternoon we want to remind all 8th grade students and parents that there will be a drive through Promotion Ceremony on Wednesday, June 2nd.  You can drive through the event anytime between 3:00 and 6:00 pm.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Thanks for your time this afternoon,
Mrs. Francisco

Tuesday, May 18th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.  This is Mrs. Francisco.  I am calling to remind all students that tomorrow our in person learners are having a remote day where they will check their Canvas pages for lessons left by their teachers.  Some of our remote students will be coming to the school tomorrow to take End of Grade or End of Course Testing.  The details are:

We will provide breakfast and lunch.

Sunday, May 10th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly update. We wish all the Viking Mom's a very Happy Mother's Day and we hope you had a wonderful day celebrating with your family.   In today's message we are including specific End-of-Grade and End-of-Course testing information  for our Remote Learners and our Face-to-Face Learners.  Please select the letter that applies to your child.  For all students taking EOGs/EOCs - all students must bring their GCS issued device (laptop) to school every day.  The device should be fully charged as all testing will be completed online.  Additionally, all students must participate in an Online Tutorial before testing.  Please ask your child if he/she has completed this.    Finally, bus information for Remote Only students who are testing on Wednesdays has been communicated to Core 1 teachers and they are sharing this information with students this week during Core 1 live teaching times.

Also attached to this call is an important document about Summer Math Course Enrollment opportunities.  Please look over this information and reach out to your child's counselor at 336-605-3333 for additional information or if you have any questions.

Thank you for your time this afternoon.

In Person Students Testing Letter

Remote Students Testing Letter

End of Year Testing Calendar

Sunday, April 25th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.

We are excited to have all In Person students back in the building all 5 days this week!

We want to remind all parents to please send a note to school with your student if you plan to pick them up early (before 2:30) and please remind them to turn the note in to their homeroom/core 1 teacher. We do not allow early dismissals past 2:30 in the afternoon. In order to avoid students missing classes at the end of the day, please try to schedule all appointments after school hours.

There is a school wide PTSO outdoor beautification this coming Saturday, May 1st.  Please see the PTSO Newsletter for more information on how to volunteer.

8th Grade Parents - the 8th Grade Drive-Through Promotion Ceremony is set for Wednesday, June 2nd from 3:00-6:00 pm.

Later this week we will be sending an email with the End of Grade/Course Testing Calendar attached.

The week of May 3-7th is Teacher Appreciation Week.  The PTSO is planning special days for our teachers - please see their Newsletter for the daily themes for May 3-7th.  Thank you for supporting our teachers!

Finally this week, now that all students have their own laptop device we want to reiterate that cell phones should not be out during instructional time.  Please make sure your student understands that if they bring a cell phone to school it should stay in their book bag unless directed to use it by a teacher.

Thanks and have a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, April 11th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings!

We are excited that all students that are in person learners will soon be returning to school five days a week.  This will begin on April 19th.  We know that some students had originally been told that they might start back 5 days a week earlier but now this has changed and all students that are learning in person will begin 5 days a week beginning April 19th.  That means that this coming week everyone continues coming to school the same way that you have been.  If you are in Co-hort A you continue coming to school this week only on Monday and Tuesday.  If you are in Co-hort B you continue coming to school this week only on Thursday and Friday.  If you are in Co-hort C and you have been coming to school 4 days a week then you will continue to do that this week.

Here is one piece that is slightly confusing.  While we are saying that 5 day a week instruction begins the week of April 19th, that same week there is an alternative schedule on that particular Wednesday, April 21st.  That particular Wednesday, April 21st will be a remote learning day for all students because we had already scheduled in person testing for our Remote Only students that day and we will honor this original testing date that had been scheduled for our Remote Only students.  There are a couple of other Remote Instructional days that will be used later this school year for Remote Only testing as well and we will publish that calendar on our School Website very soon.

We want to remind you that report cards will be emailed to students and parents on April 14th

Each in person learning student has been provided an ID card called a GCS One Card.  It is required that all students wear this card to school at all times they are on campus.  All bus riders will begin scanning their One Card as they enter and exit a bus so it is very important that students keep their One Card with their school belongings so that they remember to wear it to school each morning.  I have been recommending to them that they store it each night near their mask and/or cell phone so that they will remember to grab it/wear it each morning as they are leaving the house.  If your student lost their one card please send 5.00 to order a replacement.  We can make replacement cards but we must charge the $5.00 fee to cover the cost of the replacements.  Thank you for your cooperation and support in reminding your child to wear their card to school each day.

In order for all students to return to classrooms that will meet the new CDC requirements on April 19th we have had to relocate some classrooms.  A few of our 8th grade classrooms are transitioning to mobile classrooms this week and next.  As always if you have any questions please reach out to your grade level administrator, Mrs. Francisco, Ms. Martin, or Mr. Steger.

Thank you for your time this afternoon and have a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

Monday, April 5th

Good afternoon NWMS parents.  This message is for parents using the car rider line for in person learning students.  We wanted to remind you that beginning Tuesday the car rider line will begin at 8:15.  Please do not drop students off prior to 8:15.  All students must exit their car from the car rider line after the staff member has verified the Crisis Go app on the student or parent's cell phone.  We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

This arrival start time of 8:15 for the car rider line does not impact bus riders in any way.  The bus stops and pick up times do not change in any way for bus riders.

Thank you for your time this afternoon,

Mrs. Francisco

Monday, April 5th

Remote Only Parents,

The North Carolina End of Year testing will begin on Tuesday, May 18th.  Remote Only students will be required to take the End of Year tests in person here at Northwest Middle.  These tests cannot be taken remotely, and the dates have been set by our District.  We will follow the same safety protocols set by GCS for our face-to-face learners.

The following survey has important information needed to arrange transportation for our Remote Only students who will be taking the End of Year testing in person on these select dates.  We need all surveys completed by Tuesday, April 6th.  Please take few minutes this afternoon to complete this.  Again, this only needs to be completed by parents of students who are Remote Only - not currently attending in person learning any days of the week.

https://forms.office.com/r/CLr9LV2pg9

Thank you so much for your attention to this quick survey and have a great rest of your day.

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, April 4th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings!  We hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break.  We want to remind everyone that tomorrow, Monday, April 5th is a Teacher Workday.  We look forward to seeing students back in class on Tuesday, April 6th.

As a quick reminder, we are bumping the entrance time for students back to 8:15 starting on Tuesday.  Our staff will be outside in the car rider line to begin unloading students at 8:15.  We continue to be required to check the Crisis Go app so it is very important that all students remain in your car in the car rider line until the staff arrives to begin the unloading process.  We appreciate your continued cooperation during morning arrival - it is going great!

Thanks for your time this afternoon.

Mrs. Francisco

Friday, March 26th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings!

We want to wish everyone a very happy Spring Break.  We look forward to students returning to school on Tuesday, April 6th.

When we return to school on April 6th we will be altering the time that students are allowed to enter the building.  The new time that we will begin the car rider line will now be 8:15.  We must still check the Crisis Go app and take student temperatures so please do not allow your child to exit your car until the car rider staff members have started the line at 8:15.

We had allotted more time than we needed and our staff has been working very long hours.  We now know after several weeks that we can safely have all students enter the building in less than one hour so we are shortening the amount of time to 8:15-8:55.  We hope you understand and we look forward to seeing all students on Tuesday morning 4/6 beginning at 8:15.

Please enjoy the break and stay safe.

Mrs. Francisco

Wednesday, March 24th

Good afternoon.  This message is for our Remote Only students. If you attend school with Cohort A or B please disregard this message because you are receiving your device on your in-person learning days.

Remote only students may begin curbside pickup of their GCS Chromebook beginning tomorrow -  on Thursday or Friday from 10 am until 3 pm. Teachers are also placing other school materials and resources with the Chromebooks so that all can be picked up at the same time. When you arrive at school, please drive through the car rider lane and stop at Front Entrance. Please provide your Teacher Homeroom and Student Name to staff who will be working the curbside pickup and we will bring your Student Chromebook and materials to your car.  Please wear a mask and remain in your car.

We hope that most of you will be able to arrive during the designated time, but if 10-3 on Thursday or Friday cannot work with your schedule please call our office at 336-605-3333 to schedule an appointment to pick up your new Chromebook.  It is our goal to have the Chromebooks available to students prior to Spring Break.  If we are not able to provide you your Chromebook prior to Spring Break we will work with you following Spring Break to have you pick up your new device.

Thank you,

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, March 21st

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings!  We are excited to kick off the PTSO sponsored FabFun Week. Below is a schedule of the theme for each day this week.  Have fun and be creative.  Students will also be creating a Mural of Optimism that will be proudly displayed for all to enjoy!

We are thrilled to share that this week we will begin the deployment of new Chromebooks!  Stay tuned for more specific information about receiving your new laptop!

This is the final week of the 3rd Grading Period Period. Please check your student's PowerSchool account to view updated grades and work on completing any missing assignments this week.  We will email report cards on April 14th.  Spring Break is March 29-April 2 and April 5th is a Teacher Workday.  We will see students back on Tuesday, April 6th.

This week our students will participate with a socially distanced Fire Drill.  We will also teach about Lockdown Drills and Tornado Drills but will not gather or huddle for these drills as we typically do during a non-pandemic environment.

Students will take their Math Interim Assessment Benchmarks on Wednesday.  Math 1 students will take their Benchmark on Thursday.

Thank you for remembering to wear your One Card to school each day.  Also thank you for continuing to wear your mask each day and stay socially distanced.  We greatly appreciate everyone having the Crisis Go app completed each day for the bus drivers and in the Car Rider Line.  Don't forget to download the new Here Comes the Bus App to track your bus arrival time.

We look forward to seeing everyone dressed for the following:

Monday - Blinded by the Lights - wear the brightest colors you have.  Think neon.  Think loud.  Mix & Match

Tuesday - Be your Viking Best - Go all out in your Viking gear or wear all red and black!  Show your school spirit!

Wednesday - PJs all Day - Be cozy, wear a onesie and your fuzziest slippers.

Thursday - Hat Day - wear your favorite hat...sports team, cowboy hat, taco hats.  Wear what you've got and rock it!

Friday - Dress like you're going on Vacation - Spring Break is next week!  Even if you're staying home, pretend like you're going someplace fun.  Be creative!

Thanks for your time this afternoon.

Mrs. Francisco

Friday, March 19th

If you are receiving this email we are so happy to share that your child is being invited to return to school 5 days a week beginning mid-April.  This invitation to return to school all 5 days - each week - Monday-Friday is being sent to anyone who has a current IEP, 504 plan, or is an English Language Learner.  We think this is an absolute wonderful opportunity and we really hope that each of you receiving this phone call and email will strongly consider allowing your student to return to school full time starting in mid-April.

We need each family to fill out a form letting us know if you will choose to keep your current preference or if you will choose to change and come to school all 5 days, full time - Monday through Friday.  When you open the form you will insert your child's school ID number and their birthday.  The form will then ask you two questions - do you want to come to school 5 days a week or do you want to keep the same schedule you are using right now?  If you elect to choose the return to school 5 days a week option it will then ask you if you need bus transportation.

To access the form please click here.  If you cannot access the form you can call 336-605-3333 and we can complete the form for you while you are on the phone with us.  We have to have a response to this form by everyone receiving this call/email so we ask you to complete the form even if you do not want to return 5 days a week.  Next week we will need to contact anyone who has not completed the form individually so we ask that you please take just a couple of minutes to complete the form today or over the weekend.  We will begin calling anyone we have not heard from on Monday, next week.

Again, we are really excited that we can offer you this option for your child to return to school 5 days a week.  The CDC guidelines now state that we can socially distance with 3 feet and this allows more students to return.  Also new legislation was recently passed that states that students with an IEP, 504, or EL students be offered instruction under Plan A.  We look forward to your child being with us 5 days a week.  Please know that we are continuing to require everyone to wear a mask and we will socially distance using the updated 3 feet guidelines.  We also screen each student before they enter the building using the Crisis Go app and take each student's temperature each morning.

If you need any help with the form or if you have any questions please call us at 336-605-3333.

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, March 14th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings!  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly updates.  This past week we had all three grade levels in attendance and it was absolutely fantastic!  All our students did an excellent job wearing their masks and staying socially distant.  We want to thank our parents for your cooperation with COVID-19 protocols and for your understanding as we navigate the remainder of this school year.  Parents have done an excellent job following our traffic patterns at arrival and dismissal.  We also want to thank you for using the Crisis Go app each day and reminding your student to wear their GCS One Card to school each day they are on campus.  Students use the One Card at the morning Temperature Station each day so it is very important that they wear it to school each day.  Students who lose their one card will be issued a new one with a fee of $5.00.

Did you remember to spring forward and change your clocks this weekend?  We have several important reminders for all families this week.

Please understand that in the afternoon we are busily preparing for a safe dismissal process with lots of traffic and students moving from place to place.  Because we want to ensure that everyone stays safe, we are asking you to please remember that we do not process early dismissals after 2:30.  If you are going to need to have your child leave school early, please arrange to pick them up prior to 2:30 or wait for them in the car rider line or to get home on the bus at our normal dismissal time of 3:25.  We encourage you to please schedule appointments in the afternoon on Wednesdays or on the days they are learning remotely so that they can stay in school the entire day on their face to face learning days.

We also want to strongly encourage students to ride the school bus to and from school to assist us with decreasing the number of cars in our car rider line.  The buses have very few students on them this year and they leave campus each day around 3:35 so they actually will arrive home sooner than car riders in many situations.  In order to request a bus you fill out the Transportation Preference Form that is found on the GCS Website under Quick Links.  It does take approximately 10 days once you submit the request for the bus stop to be assigned.

Please remember that our school and main office closes each day at 4:00 pm and all students must be picked up by this time in order for our school and office to close on time.

We also want to remind all students and parents that students are expected to be present on campus on the cohort day they are assigned.  Students who do not attend face to face on their assigned cohort day will be marked absent.

We begin Interim Benchmark Assessments this coming week.  Students in grades 6/7/8 will take their ELA Interim Assessment and 8th grade students will also take a Science Assessment on Wednesday, March 17th.  Please make sure your student has access to their computer device on Wednesday and that they are prepared to take these important assessments this coming Wednesday.

One final announcement this week.  Did you know that the Here Comes the Bus app has been upgraded and the new feature is called Where's My Rider.  With this new feature, parents will see a blue circle on the map for boarding and exiting the bus scan.  For more information about how to download Here Comes the Bus with Where's My Rider visit the Transportation Department on the GCS website.

We hope you have a great week - thank you for your time this afternoon.

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, March 7th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings!

This week we are thrilled to welcome our 8th grade face to face students back to campus.  We are attaching the Re-entry Handbook to this email and we hope that you will read it prior to your student returning to the building.

We want to thank everyone for downloading and using the Crisis Go app each morning before entering the building.  Everyone is doing an excellent job during the arrival process.

Last Friday an important Connect Ed call/email was sent to all Remote Only parents asking you to indicate your preferred date selection for the NWEA/Map test.  We want to remind you that your response is needed by this Friday, March 12th.

Our students will complete their registration for next school year this week.  Our counselors will work with students throughout this week to complete the registration process.  If you need assistance with registration please contact your child's counselor.

Have a great week and please let us know if we can assist you.

Mrs. Francisco

Friday, March 5th (NWEA testing)

Dear Parent/Guardian,

During the week of April 19th, our face-to-face students will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® (reading and math) on a computer or tablet during the Spring Administration. Remote students will be sent a follow-up email with additional dates for in person testing options on Wednesdays or Saturdays.  MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers use results from this assessment to adjust classroom lessons and instruction as well as to set goals for students.

The purpose of this assessment is to inform instruction, personalize learning, and measure academic growth between test administrations. For the most accurate results, students should test in-person. Our face to face students will test during in-person on their face to face cohort days. Students learning remotely will have opportunities to test in-person on Wednesday or Saturday testing sessions. We will encourage remote students testing on Wednesday or Saturday to arrange car rider transportation.  Bus transportation will also be available for remote students testing on a Wednesday or Saturday test date.

In person testing produces stronger data for teachers as they adjust instruction to meet the needs of your individual student and better data for families to understand where each student is at in their learning trajectory. Testing in-person provides a more consistent and supportive testing experience and reduces the technology issues that students might encounter. While we are going to strongly encourage our remote students to test in person on a Wednesday or Saturday, testing remotely is an option, if necessary.

MAP Growth assessments are unique as they adapt to your child’s responses to measure your child’s skill level. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If he/she answers incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below his/her grade level.

MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject and have the same starting performance level. Following each testing period, a Family Report that shows a summary of how your child is performing academically is available.

We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit.

Sincerely,

Denise Francisco, Principal

Sunday, February 28th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly updates.

On Monday we welcome back 7th grade Cohort A students.  We ask all parents to review the Re-entry Handbook that can be found on our website at this link.

Please also make sure you have downloaded the Crisis Go App and are prepared to show the app to the bus driver or the staff member in the car rider line.  For more information and directions for using the Crisis Go App please use this link.

Each day our students who streaming in for live sessions should join each class at the beginning of the class.  Because our teachers are helping to transition students between classes and ensure they maintain social distance it is possible that they will alter the start and end of the live stream classes by a few minutes as they work with the face to face students between classes and getting them settled in their classroom spaces.  Please be patient and understanding if the live remote session is altered by a few minutes at the beginning or end of class to accommodate our face to face learners.  Please also understand that our students who are streaming in for live instruction may be released to work on items in Canvas at different times during the class period if that is more effective than remaining live/streamed in for the entire 70 minute block.  Each teacher is continuing to use Canvas and all students who are streaming in for live instruction should log in to each class through Canvas at the beginning of each class period.

As our students begin to return to face to face instruction we want to remind all students and parents about the NWMS Dress Code policy.  Please review this and follow this policy each day.  In addition remember to wear a mask and your GCS One Card to school each day.

Thanks and have a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

Monday, February 22nd

Good afternoon 6th Grade Cohort A parents,

This message is for Cohort A parents who sent their student to face to face instruction today.  We just wanted to let you know what a fantastic day we had!  All of our students did an amazing job wearing their masks and maintaining their social distance!  It was so wonderful to see everyone today.

If your child is an afternoon car rider, they should have brought home a new car tag for you to hang on your rear view mirror.  Can you please make sure your child knows this number and has it memorized and written down somewhere so that tomorrow when you come through the afternoon car line we can call your number versus your last name.  It will make the process move a little bit quicker.

We want to thank you for the excellent job that all our parents did today during both morning and afternoon car rider line.  You were perfect and overall - for the first day back - things were quite smooth. Thanks for your patience, cooperation, and for following all the recommendations and procedures.

We hope you have a great night and we look forward to seeing Cohort A back tomorrow morning.

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly update.  We are thrilled to welcome the 6th grade Cohort A students back to face to face instruction tomorrow.  We have received all bus routes for our 6th grade students and you should be able to see your bus number and pick up time/location in PowerSchool.  If you are arriving by bus, please make sure you complete your Crisis Go app and show it to your bus driver to get on the bus.  If you are arriving by car, please arrive between 8:00 am and 8:50 in order to be in your homeroom/AA class by the 8:55 tardy bell.  Car riders will complete the Crisis Go app in the car and show it to the staff member at the car rider area prior to exiting their car.  All students will then have their temperature taken inside the Front Commons.

Please remember that all students must wear a mask (no gaiters or bandannas) at all times they are on campus.  If you do not wear a mask one will be provided to you.  Students will also maintain 6 ft. social distancing at all times.

We will begin the dismissal process at 3:25 pm each afternoon.  Students will be picked up in the car rider line or dismissed to their bus.  We ask that all car riders be picked up by 4:00 pm.

You can find much more information about our re-entry plans on the school's website.  On our website go to the Remote Learning Tab and you will find the new Master Schedule and the Re-entry Handbook that has a lot of necessary information that we need all students and parents to read.

In cooperation with the GC Health Department, GCS employees will have an opportunity to receive their 1st vaccination later this week. In an effort to vaccinate nearly 10,000 employees, all students will have remote asynchronous learning this Friday, Feb. 26th. That means that students will learn remotely from home by attending to the learning activities that teachers post in Canvas.  No live classes will be held but all students should log into each class through Canvas and attend to the learning activities that their teachers have posted.

We want to remind all families that Interim Report Grades will be available in PowerSchool on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd.

Also, on Tuesday night the high school will present a Virtual Curriculum Night for all rising 9th grade students.  If you are in the 8th grade at NWMS you should visit the high school website for the link to the event on Tuesday night that begins at 6:00 pm.

Have a good night.

Mrs. Francisco

Wednesday, February 17th

Good morning NWMS Vikings,

Starting Monday, 2/22 all students in all grades will begin following the Master Schedule that is found at the end of the attached handbook.

Thank you for taking the time to read over this important document.

We look forward to seeing our face-to-face Cohort A 6th graders on Monday.  We also hope everyone stays safe and warm with the potential for more icy weather the next couple of days.

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, February 14th

Good afternoon NWMS this is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly update.  We hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day!  We also hope that your power has been restored if you lost power with the ice storm this weekend.  At this time it appears that the school's power is back on.  Tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 15th is a teacher workday so students will not have live classes or need to log-on to their Canvas courses tomorrow.  This Wednesday, Feb. 17th will be our make-up and completion date for all NWEA Map Tests for both ELA and Math.  Any student who needs to make-up or finish one or both of their MAP tests will work with their ELA and Math teachers on Wednesday to complete this important assessment.  Because of this all of our other students not taking a make-up or finishing an NWEA/MAP test will check into their teachers' Canvas pages for an asynchronous day of instruction.

For our 7th and 8th grade students who ordered/purchased a yearbook we are still planning to have the Drive Through Pick Up for Yearbooks tomorrow.  If you are not able to drive through the car rider line tomorrow please email Ms. Arnold to arrange a different time to pick up your yearbook or let her know if you would like to get your copy when you return for face to face instruction.

Last week on Thursday or Friday each family should have received a phone call and email message from me about the learning preference you selected for your student for the remainder of this school year.  If you have changed your mind and you now want your student to remain a remote learner for the rest of the year we will need you to contact our school's data manager by noon tomorrow.

We are in the process of finalizing logistical plans for students to return to the building and we will be sharing a Re-entry Student/Parent Handbook later this week.  This handbook will provide you answers to many questions about the schedule and the day to day operations for when students return to the building.  Beginning on 2/22 the daily schedule for all students will change to the longer instructional day and all students will attend class from 9:00-3:25 each day.  They will attend all core classes and one encore class each day.  Beginning the week of 2/22, Wednesdays will be a live remote instructional day for all students and we will follow the same bell schedule that students will follow on the other four days of the week.  This bell schedule can be shared with you via email from your child's Core 1 teacher and it will also be posted to our school's website early this week.

We will check temperatures of each student as they arrive at school.  We will also be using a new district app called Crisis Go that will allow you to enter your answers to the GCS Attestation Questions and show us your Green Pass directly from your phone.  If a student has their own phone that you are allowing them to bring to school we will encourage the student to download the app directly to their own phone in order to show us the green pass as they exit a bus, exit a car or at the temperature check stations in our Front Commons.  We will be sharing much more about this app over the next few days and providing you detailed instructions on how to download the app and how to use it as well.

And now we have an important update regarding registration for next school year.

Registration for the 2021-2022 school year is right around the corner!

8th grade students and parents have received information about the NW High School Rising 9th Grade Curriculum Night which will be held on Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:00pm.  A Teams link will be posted on the NW High website to use for attending this meeting.  A recording will also be posted for those who are unable to attend at that time.  We will share any updates on the high school registration process as soon as we receive other information from the high school.

6th & 7th grade parents, students will be registering for their NW Middle courses for next school year during the week of March 6-14th.  Information will be sent via email to parents in the next couple of weeks to explain how the registration process will be handled for this year, along with information about courses that will be offered.  NW Middle counselors will visit 6th & 7th grade classes to assist students with registration.  Please contact the Counseling Department with any questions.

Thank you for your time this evening,

Mrs. Francisco

Wednesday, January 27th

Good afternoon NWMS parents. Report cards will be delivered to families electronically through PowerSchool tomorrow Jan. 28.  Report cards will be emailed to your child’s school email account, as well as to any emails we have on file for parents within PowerSchool. If you do not currently receive emails through PowerSchool but would like to receive your child’s report card by email, please contact our school’s data manager, Monica Bennett in the main office. The report cards will be password protected, and instructions on how to access them will be included in the email message. If you do not have email and would like to receive a paper copy of the report card, please contact our school data manager.

Also, next Wednesday, Feb. 3rd and Wednesday, Feb. 10th all students at NWMS will participate with an online/remote ELA and Math assessment called NWEA Map Testing.  Each student will take one test on 2/3 and the other test on 2/10.  One will be for ELA and one will be for Math.  Your child's ELA and Math teachers are sharing more information about these tests with the students during live classes over the next few days.  They are also planning to have students take a practice test next Monday or Tuesday.  There is a lot of information about the NWEA Tests on our school website under the Remote Learning Tab.  Please review this information and thank you for supporting this important assessment and making sure your child is in attendance on 2/3 and 2/10 for the remote/online testing.

Have a great afternoon.

Wednesday, January 20th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.  This afternoon I am calling to provide you a district update on remote learning.  As we approach the second semester and prepare for students to return to in-person learning, we wanted to make you and your student aware of some schedule changes that will begin the week of February 1st.  Beginning that week, we will transition away from having Flex Fridays and instead provide live instruction 5 days a week including live instruction on Fridays.

While we are still planning for re-entry of middle school students in the near future, we want to make sure students are maximizing their engagement of courses.  To make this possible, middle schools in our district will be moving to five synchronous days of instruction a week. This means our teachers will be able to work with our students more often each week.  This will eliminate Fridays as flex days/office hours and they will now be instructional days.

Your student’s schedule will remain the same as it has since the beginning of the year, however Friday will now be an instructional day.  Encore classes will continue to meet with Mondays and Wednesdays always being A Days, Tuesdays and Thursdays always being B Days, and Fridays will rotate being A Day or B Day each week.  Friday Feb. 5th will be Encore A Day and Friday Feb. 12th will be Encore B day and so on.

This change is being made because with one day of instruction being lost a week, students are losing 20% of possible instruction time each week. Over the course of a semester or year this adds up. The original schedule was made back in the early fall with the intent of having a planning/flex day to accommodate for cleaning. Since students have not returned to in person learning up to this point, this day would be best used as an instructional day.

When students return to buildings, Wednesdays are still planned to be used for asynchronous instruction and students will still return on either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday with all students learning remotely/asynchronously on Wednesdays while the building is cleaned.

To summarize middle school students:

  • Will move to live instruction taking place 5 days a week - Monday-Friday while we remain in remote learning
  • Will continue the current remote daily schedule that has been in place since the beginning of the year
  • Fridays become instructional days beginning the first week of February
  • This change will begin the first week in February (so 1/22 and 1/29 will continue to be Flex Fridays for the next two weeks)
  • When we return to in person learning students will attend with a co-hort on Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday and everyone will have an asynchronous day of instruction on Wednesday.  On the opposite day of their face to face days students will join the in person students by streaming in via Teams and using Canvas.  If you have selected for your student to remain remote then they will join the class via Teams and through Canvas all four days.

Thank you for your continued partnership and please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Monday, January 18th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.

We hope that you enjoyed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  Please remember that tomorrow is a Teacher Workday.  We look forward to seeing students back in their live remote learning classes on Wednesday, Jan. 20th.  We begin the 3rd Quarter on Wednesday!  Teachers are finalizing grades and we will be in touch soon about when and how we will be sending 2nd Quarter Report Cards.

There is a School Based Leadership Team Meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 20th at 3:00.

This Friday, Jan. 22nd, our 7th and 8th grade students will take the ELA Interim Assessment #2.

We hope that you have a great week.

Sunday, January 11th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We hope that you had a wonderful weekend.  This week is the final week of the 2nd Quarter.  All coursework should be complete this week and we are asking all students and parents to please log-in to your PowerSchool/PowerParent Account to review your grades and work closely with your teachers this final week of the quarter to be certain that all of your assignments have been turned in.  We know how hard you are working during remote learning and we want to ensure that no students have any missing work as we end the quarter.

The GCS Board of Education meets Tuesday afternoon.  At this time, students who are electing to return to face to face instruction will return to the building on Jan. 21st for 6th grade and Jan. 25th for 7th and  8th grade.  You have been assigned to a co-hort and will attend on either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday.  Your Core 1 teacher has communicated with each of you which co-hort you are assigned to.  They are also going over details of what the school day will look like and how you attend your Encore classes.  They are also explaining to the students who will remain Remote Only what the updates to their daily schedule will be and how they will attend their classes remotely.  If you have any questions about your child's face to face or remote learning schedule please reach out to your child's Core 1 teacher.

We are also sharing updates about what face to face instruction and procedures for returning as part of the daily announcements that students and parents (if you are signed up to be an "observer" in your child's Canvas courses)  receive each day at 8:30.  We have already shared two videos about lunch processes and riding the bus.  There will be two more videos on Monday and Tuesday of this week.  We encourage you to watch these informative videos so that you will have more information about how we are preparing for students to potentially return to the building.  If you are returning for face to face instruction later this month and plan to use the car rider line please begin making plans for our arrival time of 8:00 am.  Students will not be able to exit cars or enter the building until 8:00 am and all students must be screened in the car rider line so we will not be able to allow students to be dropped off in areas around campus and then walk up to the school.  We must ask all parents and students in the car rider line a series of questions prior to students exiting cars/entering the school so we want to make sure that all parents are making plans for arrival around the 8:00 start time.  Thank you for your support and cooperation.

We also want to remind everyone that Monday, Jan. 18th is a holiday and the school will be closed.  Tuesday, Jan. 19th is a Workday and students will not have instruction or live remote learning on that day.  There is no school for students on either Jan. 18th or 19th.

Have a great week and thank you for your time this evening.

Sunday, January 3rd

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

The NWMS staff hopes that everyone had a wonderful winter break and happy holiday season.  We wish everyone a very Happy New Year as we begin 2021.

By now you have learned that the return to in person learning has been delayed until later in January.  We will continue with our current Remote Learning Schedule and there are no changes for the next few weeks.  Students should continue logging in daily for live instruction in all their classes and there are no time changes to the daily lessons.  Students will log in for live instruction daily Monday-Thursday and Fridays will continue to be Flex Fridays when students log in but attend to announcements and lessons that teachers have posted in Canvas for their Friday learning.

Please note that tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 4th is a Teacher Workday. Students will return with live remote instruction this week on Tuesday, Jan. 5th.

Parents and students - we in the final two weeks of the 2nd Quarter Grading Period.  It is imperative that all students and parents ensure that all assignments have been completed and that students do not have any missing work or assignments.  The grading period will end on Friday, Jan. 15th. Please log in to your PowerParent account and review the current grades with your child to ensure they have turned in all work.  Please use the Teacher Workday tomorrow to communicate with your child's teachers if there are any questions about your child's assignments or grades.

Please mark your calendars and note that Monday, Jan. 18th is a holiday and Tuesday, Jan. 19th is another Teacher Workday.

Your child's teachers have information regarding the co-hort days your child will attend school once we return to face to face instruction later this month.  Each teacher is communicating with students and parents if they will attend on Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday once the school system announces that students are able to return to in person learning.  If you have not heard from your child's teacher about which co-hort they have been assigned please email your child's Core 1/Homeroom teacher to get this information.  At this time, due to very tight in person capacity, we are not able to change assigned co-hort days.  Thank you for understanding and for your cooperation as we plan for re-entry later this month.  If you requested bus transportation you should be able to see your child's assigned bus information in your PowerParent account or by downloading the Here Comes the Bus app on your smart device.  For questions about transportation and bus requests please contact the bus office.  You can find more information about riding the bus by visiting the GCS webpage and going to the Transportation Department page.

We plan to hand out last year's yearbooks once all yearbooks have arrived and once students return to in person learning.  We thank you for your patience and we understand that everyone is anxious to receive the yearbook from last school year.  At this time, due to not being in school and not having had pictures taken we are not planning to produce a yearbook for the 20-21 school year.

We hope that you have a nice week and again - Happy New Year!  We look forward to working together as we end the second quarter grading period.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns and as always thank you for your outstanding partnership as we continue the 2nd half of the 20-21 school year.

Sunday, December 20th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

This week is our final week before the start of Winter Break.  Students will attend remote learning/live lessons on Monday and Tuesday with all their core and encore classes.  Winter Break will begin for all students on Wednesday, while Wednesday is a teacher workday for our staff.  We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and wonderful holiday break and look forward to seeing all students back in Remote Learning on Tuesday, Jan. 5th.

Our 6th graders will return for face to face instruction on Thursday, Jan. 7th.  Our 7th and 8th graders will return for face to face instruction on Monday, Jan. 11th.  This week on Monday and Tuesday your Core 1 teachers will be communicating with you if you are in Cohort A or Cohort B.  Cohort A will attend face to face on Mondays/Tuesdays and Cohort B will attend on Thursday and Friday.  Wednesdays will be remote learning for all students and will look and feel much like Flex Fridays have been the first half of the year.  Please understand that due to capacity in our classrooms we are not able to make changes to your assigned Cohort A or B.

We do not anticipate any teacher or schedule changes for our students.  The school day will be longer once we return and your Core 1 teachers will be sharing the new bell schedule with all students on Monday and Tuesday of this week.  We will begin the car rider process each morning at 8:00 (students will not be allowed to be dropped off or enter the building before 8:00).  All students will need to be in homeroom by 8:55 when the Tardy Bell will ring.  You are probably able to see your bus information through your PowerParent account.  Please contact the transportation office if you need assistance with determining your bus route or pick up time.  Students that are streaming into class on their remote days will log in much like they have been during the first half of the year.  Your Core1 teachers will talk more about this with you on Monday and Tuesday of this week so please make sure you join and attend all of your Core and Encore classes tomorrow and Tuesday.  If you selected Remote Learning and not the Face to Face option you also will keep your same teachers and will log into live remote classes and utilize Canvas just as you have been the first part of this year.

Students will pick up Car Rider tags and their Student ID/One Cards on their first day of face to face class.  We are looking forward to our students returning and are pleased that we will not see schedule or teacher changes when students return.  We hope you have a wonderful week.

Best regards,

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, December 6th

Good evening Northwest Middle Vikings this is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly update.

The Book Fair continues this week.  Please visit our school website and the Media Center tab for information on how to access the book fair.  Ms. Stringer also has a lot of information about the book fair on the Media Center Canvas page and she has messaged students about how to access the virtual book fair as well.  The book fair supports our Media Center financially and we greatly appreciate your support.

2nd Quarter Interim Progress Reports will be ready in your child's PowerSchool Account beginning Tuesday, 12/8.  We will not mail the individual reports but we do ask that all parents log into their PowerParent account to access mid-quarter grades and take note of each child's progress. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions about grades or progress.  Also, if you would like a hard copy of the report mailed home please call our main office so that we can make arrangements for you.  If you need support with setting up a PowerParent account so that you can view grades please visit our website and go the Parent Tab where you will find directions on how to create your account.

6th grade parents - the math teachers would like for each family to stop by the school on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of this week between 8:00 and 3:30 to pick up the next math workbook that each student will need for the next unit of study.  You will need to know your child's math teacher when you enter the Front Commons and then find that teacher's table and your child's name on their workbook.  The books will be ready on Tuesday at 8:00 am.  If you need to make arrangements to pick your child's book up on a different day or time please contact your child's math teacher to make arrangements.

Thanks for your time this evening and have a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, November 22nd

Good afternoon - this is Mrs. Francisco, principal at Northwest Middle.  This afternoon in approximately 15 minutes many of you will be receiving an additional call from me.  We have been asked to confirm the selections that parents indicated on the Parent Preference Survey that you submitted in October.  The call and email that you will receive will indicate if you selected to return to In Person Learning or continue with Remote Learning Only if the board does indeed vote for students to return to the building in January.  When you receive your call if your preference remains correct then you do not need to do anything.  However, if the preference that we have down for you is not correct or if you have changed your mind then we will need you to follow the directions in that call/email to update our records.  Thank you for taking the second call tonight and please let us know if you have any questions about the call.  If you do not receive a second call it could be because we did not receive a response to the original survey that went out in October.  If that is the case, please email Monica Bennett, our school's Data Manager, and she can document your preference.  You can email Ms. Bennett at bennetm@gcsnc.com.

We also want to remind everyone that we only have school on Monday and Tuesday this week.  We begin the Thanksgiving holiday on Wednesday and there is no school on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of this week.  We wish you a very happy Thanksgiving.  We also have two important announcements this week from our Media Center.  First, Battle of the Books will have an Interest Meeting on Monday, November 23rd at 4 pm. Students interested in participating in our Virtual Battle of the Books team may locate the Team meeting link in the Media Canvas course announcements.  Second, our PTSO and NWMS Media Center will be holding a VIRTUAL Scholastic Book Fair beginning November 30th through December 13th. The Book Fair will consist of online ordering and book orders will be delivered directly to your home! Stay tuned for more information on our school website, through our PTSO newsletters, the Media Canvas course and our social media accounts. Thank you for supporting our School Media Center by ordering from our Virtual Book Fair!

We hope you have a wonderful week and thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, November 8th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.  Please remember that Wednesday, Nov. 11th is a holiday and there is no school on this day.  New Math workbooks will be available for pick in the front commons of school beginning Monday November 9th through Thursday November 12th from 8:30am until 3pm.  Materials will be sorted by Math teacher and will have your student's name on the front.  Please contact your child's math teacher if you have any questions.

NWMS cafeteria is providing free breakfast and lunch to anyone age 0 to 18.  Meals are served daily from 11-12 in the front of the school.  Each bag you receive will contain a complete lunch for that day and a complete breakfast for the next day.  Please keep in mind you do not have to be a student at NWMS to pick up your meals here.  They are for any child between the age of 0 to 18.  Your child does not have to be in the car with you when you pick up meals.  If you have any questions please call our main office and we will connect you with our awesome cafeteria manager.

We want to thank our PTSO and all the volunteers for the campus wide beautification event that was held this weekend.  There were many projects completed and the school looks amazing!

Please remember to check your child's grades each week in PowerSchool via your PowerParent account.  We want to ask that you encourage your child to un-mute their microphones and show their video during live instruction to make the class more engaging.  We also want to remind everyone that attendance is mandatory each day.  Grades are being taken and each teacher, including Encore teachers, have high expectations for students completing all of their assigned work.  Please communicate with your teacher if you have any technology or Internet concerns or if you need additional support.  Teachers have office hours each day outside of your live classes and they can meet individually with you during these office hours to support your learning.  Please contact your child's teacher if your student is behind on any work to work out a plan for making up assignments.  We are thankful that our students are doing their very best and we appreciate all parents for supporting remote learning.  Please let us know how we can best assist you during this time.

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, November 1st

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We hope that everyone has their power restored following last Thursday's storm.  We also hope you had a wonderful Halloween.  Have you seen the costume contest on the PTSO website?  You can vote up until this evening so check it out if you have not already seen it!

This week your child's report card will be mailed home.  If you do not receive the report by the end of the week please contact the main office.

We want to remind everyone that Tuesday is Election Day and there is no school on this day.  We also want to remind everyone that at the end of the ballot you will find the area for the School Bond that will provide much needed facility and construction needs for our schools including Northwest Middle School.  Please remember to vote on Tuesday if you have not already done so!

We also want to remind everyone that Wednesday, Nov. 11th is a holiday and there will not be school on this day as well.

Don't forget that the PTSO is holding a Food Drive this Saturday and you can sign up for Campus Beautification by visiting the PTSO website.

Have a wonderful week!  We are very proud of our students for continuing to attend all live classes, turn in their assignments and do their very best while we continue remote learning.  Attendance in live sessions is required each day and if students are not able to attend the live session they must watch the recorded lesson and submit all the course work.  They should communicate with their teacher if they are not able to attend live and need to access the recorded lesson.  Communication between teachers and students during remote learning is one of the key factors in ongoing success.  Thank you for all you are doing to support your child at home - we greatly appreciate all our families!

Sunday, October 25th

The PTSO has a lot of fun events coming up that all parents need to mark on their calendars. The PTSO is selling Viking Birthday Signs to be displayed at our school during the first week of each month in honor of your student.  All signs will then be passed along to the parents for your home.  If you are interested in a birthday sign for your student who’s birthday is in November, your order must be received by October 26th.

On Thursday, October 29th, Rio Grande of Oak Ridge is hosting a restaurant night on behalf of NWMS.  Be sure to mention our school and show them your free cheese dip coupon!  Coupon is located on the PTSO website.

The PTSO is hosting a virtual halloween costume contest on Saturday October 31st.  Send in a picture of your student dressed up by 7pm Saturday night.  Voting on the PTSO Facebook page will go live at 8pm and voting will end at 8pm Sunday November 1st.  Winners will receive gift cards valued staff $50, $25 and $10.

And the biggest event coming up is the NW Middle vs. NW High School Food Drive to take place on November 7th.  We are competing against each other to receive the most donations in order to benefit our NW Guilford Area Backpack Ministry.  NW Middle is a very competitive group of people.  Let's show these high school people how Viking strong we really are!  Visit the school or the Ptso’s websites for more details as to the types of foods we need.

This week is Red Ribbon Week.  Each morning on the Morning Message Announcement we will share a script provided by GCS that focuses on staying drug free!

Please mark your calendars with the following important dates for November:

November 3rd is a Vacation Day/No School for Election Day.

November 11th is a Holiday/No School for Veterans Day

November 25, 26, and 27th are days off from school for Thanksgiving.

Thank you for your time this afternoon.

Sunday, October 18th

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings this is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly update.  We want to remind everyone that tomorrow is a Teacher Workday.  Students will not have live class sessions tomorrow.  By now, I am sure that most have you have heard In response to Guilford County’s COVID-19 data, Superintendent Dr. Contreras announced a revised school re-entry plan. The re-entry plan still allows for students’ gradual return to the classroom, but much more slowly. Middle school students may return on Nov. 12, pending a review of health data. In addition to its Virtual Academies, the District will now be able to offer remote learning through students' home schools at most elementary and middle schools for students who do not want to return face-to-face.  We should learn more about options for remote learning at Northwest Middle later this coming week and we will be sharing more details about the district's guidance for remote learning at NWMS when the data from the Parent Preference Form is released.

We want to thank everyone for their continued patience and cooperation.  We also want to extend a happy retirement message to both Tammy Balser and Beth Sizemore who announced recently that they will be retiring.  We wish them all the best as they begin a new chapter after a rewarding career.  They will be greatly missed!

Tuesday is the beginning of the 2nd quarter.  We continue to encourage all students to log in to each class daily and submit all assignments by their due date.  As we ended 1st quarter there were many students who had to make up many missing assignments and we hope that we begin 2nd quarter with students attending each day and submitting all their work.  Our teachers take attendance each day and student attendance in daily instruction through Canvas and Teams is required.  Thank you for continuing to do your best!  We hope you have a great week!

Thursday, October 8th

Good afternoon NWMS community.  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with a message from our PTSO.  It looks to be a rainy weekend, so we have made the decision to move Beautification Day to November 7 and 8. Mark the new date in your calendar and we will communicate all details later this month. In the meantime, there are plenty of projects around the NWMS campus to keep you busy. Check out the PTSO website for a list of projects that can be completed on your own time.

This week during Morning Announcements I have shared information about returning to school.  6th grade will return on Oct. 20th and 7th and 8th on Oct. 26th.  Please ask your child if they saw the morning announcements.  You can receive the announcements as well by becoming an observer on your child's Canvas account.  The information was also sent typed out in the announcement section of Canvas as well.  We will continue to communicate information over the next several days as more information is released from GCS.  I know many of you are wanting to know if your child will attend on Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday.  We hope to have that information, bus numbers, and car tag numbers ready early next week.  Thank you for your continued patience and support.  Teachers will be going over information about returning to school in their live sessions next week as well.  Thanks for your time this evening.

Sunday, October 4th

Good afternoon Northwest Middle Community - this is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly update.

We want to begin by thanking all families - the PTSO raised $19,000 through the Viking Cash donation campaign!  We are so thankful for all the support from our PTSO and Northwest families!

Next weekend the PTSO is planning a campus beautification event.  Parents are asked to please visit the PTSO website for information about the two day event on Oct. 10th and 11th.

Last week parents were asked to complete a preference survey to indicate their preferences in returning to face to face instruction, attend the district's Virtual Academy, or possibly attend school through NWMS but remotely.  We should learn more about the outcomes of this survey early this week and I will communicate with you just as soon as the district shares next steps or any decisions that are made based on that survey.  Students were also placed into face to face cohorts based on 50% of the Core 1/homeroom class.  These cohorts were done alphabetically and unfortunately we are not able to honor requests to change due to capacity in our building that will adhere to strict guidelines for social distancing.

We have had to make many changes in our building to prepare for students to possibly return on Oct. 20 and 26th.  Because our mobile units can only accommodate 9 students we were not able to use these spaces for core instruction.  We therefore had to move our entire 6th grade inside the building.  This move caused shifts and moves for teachers in grades 7 and 8 and also many encore classes.  To protect students we will not be changing classes or mixing students for class changes.  Students will go to their Core 1 classroom and then the teachers will rotate to the students so that we protect everyone and keep movement and mixing of students to a minimum.  In the morning all students will have their temperature taken before entering the building and parents will be asked questions in the car rider line prior to the student exiting the car.  Our arrival process is currently being planned and we will be sharing much more about the changes and processes for morning arrival over the next several days.  The arrival process will begin at 8:00 am each day and students being brought to school by a car will have their temperature taken in the car prior to exiting the car.  Because of this every student that is being brought to school by a car will have to use the car rider line and not be dropped off in areas around the school or dropped off prior to 8:00 am.  Bus riders will also have their temperature taken as they are exiting the school buses.  We realize that returning to school will be different and we are working on our processes and procedures to keep everyone safe.  We encourage you to please visit the GCS website and the Remote Learning Tab where you will find the Return to School Parent Guide.  Click here for a link to the site.  This guide will answer many questions that you might have about students returning to face to face instruction on Oct. 20th and 26th.  We will also be sending more communication out over the next several days.  Thank you for your time this evening.

Sunday, September 27th

Good afternoon Northwest Middle Community. This is Mrs. Francisco with your weekly update. Last week, the board of education voted on a plan to return students to the classroom in phases. Middle school students will attend two days per week, either on Monday and Tuesday or on Thursday and Friday, with Wednesday as a remote learning day. Sixth graders will return on Oct. 20, and seventh and eighth graders will return on Oct. 26. We are working on scheduling now and will have that information for you in the coming weeks. The middle school day will be from 8:35 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.

If you are interested in attending a virtual school instead of returning to the classroom, the deadline to register closes Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. Go to gcsnc.schoolmint.net to register.

To allow for social distancing on buses and to assess the need for transportation, we are asking all parents to fill out a transportation preference form by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, indicating whether or not you need transportation. This form can be found on our website at www.gcsnc.com/reopening, along with many other important documents. We look forward to having your child back in the building.

We also want to remind all families that tomorrow, 9/28, is a Teacher Workday so students will not log in ofr live lessons or have new assignments posted tomorrow to complete during the workday.  Students will return to remote/live lessons on Tuesday morning.  Thank you for your time this evening.

Sunday, September 20th

Good afternoon Northwest Middle.  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly update.

Please join us in supporting the PTSO!  We are in the home stretch of the PTSO Viking Cash Crusade. To date, our school has raised $10,000. Please donate if you haven’t already!  Also, we encourage all members of our school community to join the PTSO.  You can learn more about the PTSO and how to donate to the Viking Cash Crusade and join by visiting the PTSO Website.

We want to remind all our students and parents that attendance and participation are essential for learning to take place in schools. That is true whether schooling is taking place face to face or virtually. Please know we understand the stress of the current situation; however, we at Northwest Middle take the education of your learner seriously. We continue to maintain high expectations for students and teachers alike.  Please make sure you are attending live sessions each day and arriving to class on time and staying for the entire session.  Please also remember to attend all Encore classes each week.  Finally, it is important that each student participate with each teachers' posted Friday lessons.

Interim Progress Grades will be available on Monday, 9/21.  Parents are encouraged to log in to Power School via your Power Parent account to see the Interim Grades.  It is important to understand that while some grades may show up in Canvas, the Canvas grades are not the final grades.  To see the final grades for each class parents need to create and log in to their Power Parent Account.  If you need assistance creating your Power Parent Account you can view directions on our school's website under the Parent Tab.

We hope you had a wonderful weekend.  Thank you for your time this evening.

Sunday, September 13th

Good afternoon NWMS Viking Community.  This is Denise Francisco with your Weekly Update.

Parents, did you know that you can go to your SchoolMint account and update your address, email address, and phone number information directly?  You will receive a text message or an email and will be able to complete this by clicking on the link in the message.  The district is asking that you update this information by Sept. 18th.  If you have any questions about your SchoolMint account please contact Monica Bennett in our main office.

We want to remind all students and parents that students are required to attend to their courses on F.L.EX Fridays.  Each teacher posts content and/or assignments on their Canvas page for students to complete on Fridays.  We continue to take attendance on Friday's based on the student's log-in information and submitted assignments.

We also want to remind all students that Summer Reading Minutes can be updated on the School Website Media Center page or in the Media Center Canvas Page.  All Summer Reading Minutes are due by the end of the day on Monday, 9/14.

Parents - please create your PowerParent account so that you can see your child's grades.  Interim Progress Reports will be viewed by PowerParent on 9/21 and we need all parents to access their child's grades via your PowerParent account.  There are step by step directions on the school's website in the Parent Tab.  Please contact the school if you need additional help setting up your PowerParent account.

We know many of you are wondering about your Yearbooks from last school year.  Lifetouch is beginning to make deliveries to elementary schools and we anticipate that they will then start sending middle school yearbooks.  We will let you know just as soon as we have an anticipated delivery date.

Thanks for your time this evening.

Sunday, September 7th

Good afternoon Northwest Middle School Vikings.  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly updates.  We want to begin this week with a reminder to all students that the daily learning schedule changes tomorrow as we begin Week 4.  If you have not seen the schedule, please find the copy on our school's website in the Remote Learning Area.  I also included a copy in both Thursday and Friday's Morning Announcements.  If you are not hearing the Morning Announcements please make sure you are checking the Announcement Area of Canvas each day.  The announcement is loaded at 7:45 each morning and you can view it at anytime throughout the day.  Tomorrow all students will attend all four of their Core Classes and their two Encore Classes.  It is B Day so please make sure you attend you B Day Encore Classes tomorrow.  Each week - Monday and Wednesday will be A Days and Tuesdays and Thursdays will be B Days.  Fridays are called F.L.EX Day and you will still log into each class for directions but you will not have "live" instruction on Fridays.

Here is an important message from GCS about lunch and breakfast:

The USDA has extended waivers allowing districts flexibility in how schools distribute and pay for student meals.  We are thrilled that we will continue to serve meals to all children who are age 18 and under, without charge.

These meals will be available daily from 11 am to 12 noon, curbside, at every school and families can visit any school to pick up the meals which include lunch and breakfast for the next day.

We want to encourage parents to please take a few minutes and fill out a meal benefits application at www.lunchapplication.com, in preparation for when the waivers expire at the end of December.

We also have an important reminder from our PTSO:

The PTSO wants to remind all families about the Viking Cash Crusade.  Each year the PTSO asks for direct donations and they offer fantastic prizes that donors can have a chance at winning.  This year's grand prize is a Lenovo Laptop Computer!  The goal is to raise $20,000! Please consider donating to our PTSO and help us support our teachers as they find creative ways to educate your student.

Thanks for your time this evening.  Remember tomorrow you have live instruction in all your classes and we need all students to log in to all classes and be on time.  If you are not able to join live please communicate in advance with your child's teacher so that alternative plans can be made.  We will be taking attendance and teachers will be grading work.  Also remember that it is B Day and that everyone should attend their two Encore Classes for B Day tomorrow.  Have a great evening - Good bye.

Sunday, August 23rd

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings.  This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly updates.  This week, due to the One-on-One Teacher/Student/Parent Orientation Sessions the virtual live meetings with your Core Teachers will be held at different times than they were the first week.  This week each grade level will login to Canvas for meetings with their Core Teachers at 8:00 am.  These meetings will last approximately 1 hour.  Then for the remainder of the school day students should participate in the GCS Pre-Recorded Lessons while the teachers meet face to face or virtually with students and their parents for the Orientation Sessions.  We want to thank you for signing up for your Orientation Session.  When you arrive for the session you will be asked to wear a mask at all times you are in the building and we will check your temperature upon arrival.  Only students and their parents should attend the Orientation.  Please bring the device you are using for Remote Learning to the Orientation Session so that you can login with your Core 1 teacher during the Orientation.  Also - if you are having trouble logging into NCED Cloud, Canvas, PowerSchool or Teams we will have staff members in the cafeteria during Orientation times to assist you.  Students will also be receiving their Math workbooks when they attend their orientation session.  We look forward to seeing you this week and next when you attend your scheduled appointment.

7th Grade Parents - has your student received the required 7th grade vaccines?  All 7th graders must have boosters and one dose of a vaccine this year.  If you have any questions about the booster and vaccines please call the Guilford County Public Health, School Health Nursing Department at 336-641-3896.

Middle school students logging in to Teams this week for your live sessions at 8:00 am please remember that you can no longer sign in as a guest.  You must login as yourself using your Student ID number@stu.gcsnc.com and then your password is your birthday xx/xx/xxxx.

And now a message from our PTSO:  Have you donated to the Viking Cash Crusade yet?  The PTSO is wanting to help our school purchase any curriculum items we may need as well as create an outside classroom for our students when they return.  So far, they have raised $4,000 and have another $16,000 to go!

The PTSO is raffling off some fantastic prizes this year:  Apple AirPods Pro, an Apple Watch, a Nintendo Switch and a Lenovo Laptop!  You get one raffle ticket for every $25 you donate.  Please visit the PTSO website for more information as to how you can donate.  The link for the PTSO is on our school website also.

Parents, do you have any time to help our PTSO with some miscellaneous painting at our school?  If you have a couple of hours you can spare, we need your help!  Please email the PTSO and let them know you can help.  The projects are not hard!

Thank you for your time this evening,

Mrs. Francisco

Monday, August 17th

Good morning - this is Mrs. Francisco calling with an important message. Unfortunately, the entire state of NC is experiencing server issues with NCED Cloud this morning.  This is causing students and some teachers to not be able to access PowerSchool and Canvas.  All Opening Meeting Morning Sessions will be recorded so that any student who is not able to log in will be able to watch the recorded Opening Meeting later today once NCED Cloud has corrected the server problems.  We will continue to communicate with you as we learn more.  We are very sorry and appreciate your patience this morning while we work through this NCED Cloud server issue.

Sunday, August 16th

Good afternoon Northwest Middle Vikings this is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly announcements.  We are excited to begin the school year tomorrow, Monday, August 17th.  By now, you should have received your schedule that was mailed to your home address.  If you did not receive this mailing then you should be able to login to your NCED Account to access PowerSchool and Canvas and determine who your Core 1 teacher is.  If you have any difficulty logging into your NCED account please email your Core 1 teacher and ask that he/she reset your password.  The universal password that we included in the mailing with your schedule had a mistake (the exclamation point was in the incorrect place).  The correct universal password for NWMS is your first initial - capitalized, then lowercase last initial, then ! and then your birthday with 2 digits for the month, 2 digits for the day, and four digits for the year.  So for example if a person named Jeff Francisco were logging in his password would be:  Jf!10152005.  In the mailing we had the ! at the end but that was wrong.  The ! comes right after the person's initials.

Tomorrow morning at 9:00 each student will join their Core 1 teacher's Opening Meeting.  You will gain access to this TEAMS meeting by the Announcement section of your Core 1 teacher's Canvas page.  It is our understanding that all of the Canvas pages will be live and ready for students tomorrow morning when you login.  If you don't see all of the live links and everything this afternoon or tonight it is probably because the district is not fully releasing the pages until early tomorrow morning.  This afternoon if you are able to login to NCED Cloud and see Canvas and PowerSchool then you should be ready to connect to Canvas at 9:00 am tomorrow morning and join the live meeting.  If you are unable to login to NCED Cloud tonight then we ask you to please email your Core 1 teacher and ask that they reset your password before tomorrow morning.

We know that many of you have been wondering about last year's Yearbook.  If you ordered a yearbook they have not arrived yet.  Lifetouch has had to run their factories with several extra regulations due to COVID.  You will still receive a book if you ordered one.  We will keep you posted with more details when they are available.

For students in 7th and 8th grade band and orchestra.  If you will be borrowing a school owned instrument this year, please email your band or orchestra teacher by this Friday, Aug. 21st.

We know that the beginning of this year is far different than any of us wanted and not at all what we normally experience.  We hope that tomorrow's Opening Meeting will serve much like Open Houses have served in the past and that after you meet with your Core 1 teacher tomorrow you have a better understanding of what the next several weeks are going to look like.  Please let us know if you need help tomorrow.   Thanks for your time this evening.  Good bye.

Tuesday, July 28th

Good morning - this is Denise Francisco, principal at Northwest Middle.

I want to welcome everyone to the start of the 2020-2021 school year.  I am very excited to join this fine school and partner with you throughout this school year.  While we know that the beginning of this year is going to look and feel different than any other opening we have experienced, I want to reassure you that we are working diligently to plan for a safe and productive opening.  Today at 2:30 pm the GCS Board of Education will meet and you are able to watch this meeting live through the GCS website.  I also know that several local news stations will be broadcasting the meeting live through their websites or via Facebook live.  At this meeting, we can expect a decision to be made regarding the re-opening of our schools.  I will follow up with additional communication once the final plan is announced.  I know that many of you have questions and are concerned about the opening of school and again I want to reassure you that our remote learning plans are being redesigned and developed in partnership with the GCS Curriculum Department and we can expect our students to be engaged in live teaching and direct instruction through their Canvas Platform as we begin remote instruction this year.  Our students and teachers will find more structure to the remote learning day and more opportunity for live teaching sessions and video recordings of the live teaching sessions for students to watch back at a later time.  We will be sharing more information soon about student schedules and the plans for remote learning, but today I just wanted to make sure everyone knew about the GCS Board of Education Meeting that will begin at 2:30 and that following this meeting, over the next several days, Northwest Middle will continue to communicate and update you as more details are released.

I hope that you have a wonderful day. Thank you for your time this morning.

A reminder to our 8th grade students to complete their four year plan by this Friday the 15th.  Instructions can be found in the Counseling Center Module that has been added to the Northwest Media Center Canvas Course.  Students should first go to the Media Center Canvas course page and then scroll to find the Counseling Center module.  There will be information there on Rising 9th grade scheduling, which contains an instructional video on completing the 4-year plans, and then an assignment to submit their 4-year plan template.    Please contact the Counseling Dept with any questions.

Students--please continue to let your teachers know if you are having any difficulty with completing assignments.

Sunday, April 30th

Good evening Northwest Middle families, this is Ms. Young with a few announcements.

The NWGMS PTSO is hosting Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4th - 8th.  Want to show your appreciation to your teachers?  Feel free to drop off any gifts, notes, or special thank you to the front of the school next Monday through Wednesday, from 8am to 5pm.  The PTSO will distribute to teachers for you!  Also, send the PTSO (ptsonwgms@gmail.com) videos and pictures and they will share on their social media!

Please consider giving a few minutes of your time to help our school get more federal funding.  Go to 2020census.gov and complete the form online. Your census responses help determine our community’s federal funding for school lunches, special education, PreK services, and teacher training, as well as support for children’s healthcare, hospitals, housing, firefighters and unemployment assistance. The 2020 Census also determines how many seats our state and region have in Congress.  Let’s make sure Guilford County counts, and go to 2020census.gov.!

This is an important message from the Counseling Dept regarding high school registration for our current 8th graders.  Students will be completing their High School 4-year plans this year through Canvas.  The 4-year plan is a document that will be utilized as students complete credits towards high school graduation. Students need to complete and submit their 4-year plans via Canvas by May 15th.  Please contact the Counseling Dept with any questions.

Students--please continue to let your teachers know if you are having any difficulty with completing assignments.

Sunday, March 22nd

Good afternoon Northwest Middle families.  I hope you are all doing well, and staying healthy.  Our amazing teachers are continuing to work hard to prepare material and lessons for students beginning tomorrow.  As a reminder, material posted as of tomorrow is review and will not be taken for a grade.  It is important information, however, because it will help students get back into the swing of things to prepare them for new material, which will be beginning soon.  Parents--there are tons of resources on the GCS webpage to assist you during this online ramp up.  If your student needs a laptop, please email me at younga@gcsnc.com.  Again, please remember that there are not enough devices in the district for all students, so devices are being given out only to families that do not have ANY devices at home at this time.  The rest of our laptops will be sent to other elementary and high schools for students that don't have devices. Those devices will be prepared for your specific student so that they will work outside of the building.  Please do not come to school to pick up a device if you have not emailed me or called the school prior.  Your child's device will not be ready for pick up.  Parents may come tomorrow, Monday the 23rd from 10:00-until noon.  If you cannot come during those times, please email me to set up a different time.

Parents, if you still need to pick up any of your student's belongings, you must email me to make an appointment at younga@gcsnc.com.  In addition, students and parents, please reach out to me via my email address if you have any needs during the school closure.  You may also call the GCS hotline at 336-332-7290.  There will be some essential district and school staff working during this time, but I will be available via email at all times.  If you are aware of any children or families with any additional needs, especially food shortages, please let me know.

Attention Orchestra students: Mr. Walter and Ms. Cox will be available to tune your instrument tomorrow, Monday from 10-2.  To get your instrument tuned, just pull up in the car rider line.

As a reminder, Food distribution will continue to take place between 11:00-12:00 at Northwest High school.  Meals are available to all children 0-18.  Please check the GCS website for additional delivery sites.

When there is any additional information to share, you will continue to hear from either the district or from me.  Thanks so much, and take care!!

Sunday, October 6th

Good afternoon, this is Ms. Young, Principal at Northwest Middle school with the weekly reminders.

Just a reminder that attendance is very important to academic success.  Please continue to encourage good attendance, and please try to schedule appointments after school, when possible.  Whenever your child is absent, please send a written note to the front office or email to the homeroom teacher within 3 days of returning explaining the reason for absence.

We are continuing to see a decrease in our discipline referrals due to a change in our daily schedule.  We have increased passing time for students to change classes, with an emphasis on going to the bathroom and lockers during this time, instead of during class time.  If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or grade level Administrator.  Additionally, we are working to partner with GCS Parent Academy to plan a meeting on the dangers of vaping.  Please look out for more information about this informational session.

As a reminder October 9th is a teacher workday. There will be no school for students.

Students can still join FBLA.  Meeting is Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM.

Parents please pull all the way forward in the car rider line. This expedites the drop off procedure. The 6th grade gym is not a drop off point in the mornings unless the car rider line stops there. Also, please do not pass any cars in the car rider line.  This is in place to keep our students safe when getting out of cars and when crossing at the cross walks. Also, the back teacher parking lot is not a student drop off. All parents should go through the car rider line. We need to keep the morning car rider line moving in a safe, orderly fashion. In the afternoon, please do not park in the front lot unless your child has an early dismissal.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Sports for this week: Football is @ SE 5:30 on Tuesday the 8th.

We had an awesome first week of school.  As a reminder, students are out of school, tomorrow, Monday the 2nd for Labor day.

Our start time is 8:45am and school is dismissed daily at 3:45pm.  Although the bridge on Bunch Rd. is still under construction, we hope that it will be open by next Monday. Please continue to be patient with the morning and afternoon commutes, and please plan accordingly to arrive at school on time.  Please call the office for a car rider number, or put your child's name in the car wind shield to help speed up the car rider line.

I am hearing from transportation that there are continued bus driver vacancies.  I do not have bus rosters that list specific students, and I hear about late buses near dismissal time, so unfortunately I cannot communicate with specific families about late buses.  We are asking students to call or text parents to let them know they will be arriving late.  Students may use the phone in the front office, if needed.  Students are also supervised at all times when waiting for late buses.
