Principal's Connect Ed Messages

Sunday, April 28, 2024

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Late last week or early this week you should receive the hard copy NWEA/MAP Assessment Parent Report. Please review this report to understand your child's progress in both ELA and Math. If you did not receive a copy of your child's report, please contact either Shawna Phelps or Heather Lenard by calling 336-605-3333.

Book Fair Week is always fun and we know Mrs. Stringer has worked hard with the parent volunteers this week to make next week fantastic. Please join the fun and participate in the Spirit Week (see specific dates below and in the attachment). We also hope to see all families at Family Night on Tuesday.

Please also remember the Chocolate Party for select students on Tuesday. The list of students who qualify was sent to homeroom teachers last week. Teachers also have tickets for certain students who qualify to participate in two special events - the Kone Ice and the Money Slap portions.

Interim Reports will be emailed on Thursday, 5/2. Please review these reports with your student and contact teachers if you have any questions about your child's progress.

Let's make it a great week!

Mrs. Francisco

Course Verification for next year

We are excited to announce that there has been a document added in Powerschool where parents can log into their Powerschool Parent Portal to complete the course request verification process for the 2024-25 School Year. Parents have from April 29th-May 5th to go in their account and verify course information. Please note that parents are only verifying that these are the student’s course REQUESTS for next school year. This is not a schedule, nor a guarantee that the student will receive these classes.

Please see the attached document for step-by-step directions.

Book Drive

The Pretty Cool Book Drive, ends Monday, April 15th. Books will be donated to Backpack Beginnings. Boxes for donations will be located in the Front Commons and in the Media Center.

Important Sports Information:

  • In order to tryout for a Fall or Winter sport next year, a student cannot miss over 13 days this semester.
  • Parents and visitors that are attending Baseball games are reminded that our Gate is near the Mobile Units and near the entrance to Lower Commons/Gym. We ask that parents and visitors (and students) please not use the far left side of the school to enter the Baseball game and to please remember that students are $3.00 and adults $5.00 to enter the game. Thank you for your cooperation. We have fixed the broken barriers that had previously been in place to remind everyone that that path is not an entrance area for the games.

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,
We are heading into the final week of the 3rd quarter! The 3rd Quarter Grading Period will officially end on Friday, 3/22. Spring Break is the following week and students will return to school on Tuesday, 4/2.

We encourage everyone to review grades in PowerSchool. 3rd Quarter Report Cards will be emailed on 4/9. While you are reviewing grades please also review the number of absences and tardies.  This past week we had an increased number of students tardy - many arriving right after the 8:30 bell.  Please do your best to arrive to school before the 8:30 bell.  We also have a large number of students not bringing their One Cards to school. Please locate your One Card and bring it to school each day.  It allows the arrival process to run much more efficiently.  Please also check your book bags this afternoon and remove items that will cause the scan stations to go off and remember no aerosols or sprays allowed.

Let's make it a great week!

All students must complete this task, whether they will be attending Northwest Middle next school year, or moving onto the high school. Students should also return their course registration form to their homeroom teacher by tomorrow, March 11th.

Parents,

We have exciting news to share today!

The PTSO's World's Finest Chocolate Fundraiser started today with an awesome kickoff assembly to get everyone motivated to sell chocolate!

Chocolate Checkout Forms were distributed today at each assembly. This form needs to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school as soon as possible.  Forms and money envelopes should be returned to the Chocolate Fundraiser table in the commons area. PTSO volunteers will be at the Chocolate Table every day this week and next week during arrival and all lunch periods to collect these items.

Chocolate boxes will be distributed daily at dismissal. Each money envelope has a space for a parent or guardian signature.  Be sure to sign it each time if your student wants to sell more chocolate.

Remember that by returning your completed Chocolate Checkout Form, your student will be entered into a raffle to win one free item of Spirit Wear of their choice! The Chocolate Checkout Form is also available for printing from the PTSO website at www.nwmsptso.org  Thank you for all of your help in encouraging your student to sell chocolate to support our school!

Thank you,

PTSO President, Shay Barwick and Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS parents,

Reminders and Updates

How did it become March already! Wow - time is moving quickly!!!

Spring Picture Day will be on Friday, 3/8. Each student has a unique flyer with their own code on it. Students should bring this flyer home on Monday afternoon. All students will be photographed and then the proofs will be sent home to parents based on the information you provide from the instructions on the flyer. Everyone must complete the instructions on the flyer to view your child's proofs. Each student will have a unique code on their individual flyer - please use this code when completing your registration with LifeTouch.

A student campaign for the United Way will be held the week of 3/11-15. This will be a Penny War and the jars will be located in Front Commons. This week we ask that students start searching for pennies and collect them for the donation drive the following week.

Tomorrow we kick off the PTSO Chocolate Fundraiser! Students who wish to participate should return the permission form to their homeroom teacher. For more information about the PTSO Spring Fundraiser please see below or check out the PTSO website at nwmsptso.org

Student attendance is very important. As of last Friday, students who have missed 11 or more days of school are considered Chronically Absent. This includes both excused and unexcused absences. Please be at school each day on time (in homeroom by 8:30) and stay at school for the entire day.

Please remember that students are not allowed to bring perfume, body spray, spray deodorant, or any type of aerosol spray to school. We have students and staff that react with several allergies and asthma to these sprays and it is very important that these items not be sprayed in our school. Students who bring or spray these items in school will face disciplinary consequences.

Please check your bookbags this afternoon and prepare for Monday morning. Remove metal items and locate your One Card. If you need to purchase a new One Card please bring $5.00 to school tomorrow. Please also remember our Dress Code this week as you prepare your outfits for school.

Parents, NWEA Reports for ELA and Math were sent home with your child on Friday.  Please review this report as the data will provide you evidence of their learning and growth this school year.  Please contact our CF, Heather Lenard, if you did not receive your report or if you have any questions about the report and/or your child's progress.

Let's make it a great week!

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Reminders and Updates

We want to begin this week with sincere appreciation shared to/for/with Coach Cindy Thomas and the Girls Basketball Team! While they did not come away with the championship win on Friday night - they played with such strong passion and heart! They were coached by the very best and we all want to thank Coach Thomas for ALL that she puts into her teams each season! Thanks also to everyone who traveled to Grimsley on Friday night to show your support!

We have a great week ahead of us as we celebrate Black History Month with an assembly on Wednesday! Assistant Principal Greta Martin and a strong support team worked diligently to plan a program that includes numerous staff and students!

Your child's attendance is very important to us! We track student attendance each week and look at a report that indicates any Chronically Absent student. Teachers, counselors, and/or administrators reach out to families if a student is documented as Chronically Absent. At this time any student that has missed 12 or more days is considered Chronically Absent (this includes excused and unexcused absences). Please do your very best to be in school each day for the entire school day. Please also remember that students need to be in Homeroom by 8:30 each day. We continue to have approximately 20 students arriving after 8:30 each day.

Thank you for your continued support in ensuring that your student's choice of clothing each day is not a distraction to the learning environment. Shorts need to be a proper length that is not distracting or disruptive to the learning environment. We also ask that students please not wear sleepwear-type shoes/slippers to school. This creates dangerous transitions between classes where students have a greater opportunity to trip, fall, and be hurt during large class changes. Slippers are great for home but are not appropriate to wear to school. If you wouldn't wear a particular item out and about - it is probably not a good choice for school!

Please take a moment this afternoon to clean out your bookbag, remove metal items, find your One Card, charge your laptop, and prepare for the coming week! It will be a great week - make good choices!

Mrs. Francisco

Please review 24-25 Registration Update Below

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Reminders and Updates

It is hard to believe that this week marks the halfway point of 3rd quarter. Interim Progress Reports will be emailed to parents on Wednesday. Teachers update grades in PowerSchool weekly and parents and students are encouraged to check their grades each week. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions about grades in PowerSchool. Parents and teachers should communicate with each other anytime a student has a D or an F at Interim Progress Report or Report Card periods.

We need to continue to remind parents and students of the following items that help us keep a safe and respectful learning environment:

1. Students should never bring any type of perfume/cologne or body spray to school. We have individuals with very severe allergies and spraying these items can cause serious health risks. Students will face disciplinary consequences including/up to suspension for spraying items in school.

2. Students need to bring their One Cards to school each day. Our morning arrival process is significantly impacted by the number of students that are having to manually enter their student ID number into the computer stations each morning. Please locate your One Card and bring it to school each day. If you need to get a replacement One Card please bring $5.00 to school (Main Office) and we will order you a new card.

3. Students need to remove binders from their bookbags that have metal rings. Please replace these with binders that have plastic rings. Please also know that umbrellas, eye glass cases, and other metal items will cause the scan stations to turn red. Please go through your child's bookbag, remove items that are not essential, and help him/her remove metal items.

4. Students need to arrive in the morning early enough so that they can be in their Homeroom Classroom by 8:30. We have a small group of students that are pulling into the car rider line very close to 8:30 and this is causing these students to be tardy to class. In order for your child to safely make it to homeroom by 8:30 they need to be walking through the front doors of the school by 7:25. If you are one if these car riders that arrive close to 8:30, please get to school just a few minutes earlier.

5. While we do not restrict students from bringing a cell phone device to school, we do not allow them to have them out during the school day. Students are required to keep their cell phones in their bookbags at all times. Students are not allowed to keep them in their pockets or shirts, etc. They should never take a cell phone to a bathroom, to lunch, or have it out during the hallway or while changing classes. Teachers are directed to remove cell phones if they see them during the day and can hold them until the end of the day or until a parent comes to pick the device up. Please help us maintain a safe environment by reminding your child of this policy.

6. As the weather warms up over the next few weeks please be reminded that student shorts need to be at a long enough length that they do not cause a disruption to the learning environment. If your child's clothing is not school appropriate or if it causes a disruption to the learning environment the homeroom/classroom teacher will have the student contact you to bring a change of clothes. Please help us by checking your student's dress before they leave for the day.

Congratulations to our Winter Sports Teams coached by Cindy Thomas - Girls Basketball, Cody Hylton and Kevin Stewart - Boys Basketball, John Shumate and Mike Shaw - Wrestling, and Jessica Clements - Cheerleading! Each team had a phenomenal season! The Basketball Tournament starts on Tuesday and everyone is invited to come out and cheer on our Vikings (see more specifics below)! Thanks also to Wendy Walker for all her work organizing Study Hall and keeping the score clock.

Let's make it a great week!

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Reminders and Updates

Mr. Luck and our students did not disappoint this weekend with their remarkable production of Into the Woods! It was a combined show that brought together the talents of students from NWMS, NWHS, and Kernodle. Thank you to our NWMS Theatre Booster and to everyone who made it out to see one of the shows!

Let's make it a great week!

Mrs. Francisco

Please Remind All Students - No Aerosol Spray, Perfume Spray, Deodorant Spray

We need to remind all students that they should not bring any type of Aerosol, Perfume, or Deodorant Spray to school. There are students and staff who are negatively impacted by these sprays and for some individuals, these sprays can cause very harmful reactions and the need for medical care. This should be treated the same as we treat nut-free spaces and be respectful of all individuals in our school community by not using these sprays in the classroom, bathrooms, or hallways. Thank you for being aware of everyone around you and for your cooperation with this school-wide expectation.

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

I am writing this evening to share that during the school day today we contacted emergency services to aid a staff member who was experiencing a medical emergency.  This occurred during the 7th grade lunch period and several students saw the fire truck and ambulance arrive on site.  The firetruck and ambulance were on site for around 30 minutes giving attention to the staff member.  Everything is okay and the paramedics left the school soon after arriving.

Thank you for your time this afternoon and as always please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Happy Monday and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

I cannot believe we are in the final week of the 2nd quarter and nearing the halfway mark of this amazing school year. Parents and students - please check your grades in PowerSchool (not Canvas) and make sure that you have turned in all assignments. Friday, 1/19 is the final day of the 2nd Quarter and next Monday, 1/22 is a Teacher Workday.

We care deeply about each child's attendance in school. As of this past Friday, students who have missed 8 or more days of school are considered Chronically Absent. Please check your attendance record in PowerSchool and do your very best to attend school each day. Please also limit early dismissals and try to be on time each day.

We are searching for an EC Teacher Assistant. If you know anyone who might be interested in this position please ask them to email me and/or call me, and complete the application online.

Wishing everyone a great week!

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We are excited to share that our cafeteria and front commons will soon be enhanced with increased technology. Soon we will have brand new panel boards in both of these areas. We will be able to push our daily announcements to these large boards and connect to them for presentations, etc.

Also new to our school - the CTE Department provided a new Promethean Board to Ms. Minner's room!

We also recently had a new camera system installed allowing us to have active and historical playback views of all areas of our campus both inside and outside. This is a huge improvement to the overall safety of our campus.

Students, please go through your bookbags this afternoon and remove all old items and make sure you do not have any metal that will cause the scan stations in the front of the school to go off. Please also locate your One Card this afternoon and have it ready for school tomorrow. If you need a new One Card you can bring $5.00 to school on Monday or Wednesday and order the new card in our front office. Charge your Chromebook device tonight as well and remember to be on time and ready for a great learning day!

Wishing everyone a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

As we begin the new year we also want to introduce everyone to our newest Viking staff member.  Mrs. Jessica Brown will be joining the 8th grade math department replacing Mrs. Ellison.  Below is a brief introduction to Mrs. Brown.  She is looking forward to joining the NWMS team!

Mrs. Brown is joining the 8th-grade math team with a passion for nurturing young minds.  Holding a Masters in School Administration from North Carolina A&T, she embarked on her educational journey with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education and Middle School Math Licensure from the same institution. Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Happy first week of December!

This past week was quite eventful! There is always a silver lining and through our challenges last week we were able to get many long-standing building concerns addressed and fixed! We had major improvements made to the HVAC system and plumbing systems as a result of some of the issues that surfaced last week. Thanks to everyone for their patience and support while we addressed some challenging days. We are also very thankful for our cafeteria staff and are most appreciative of all they do to take care of our entire school community!

Congratulations to our FBLA and Chess Club students. Both groups had competition events this past weekend and did a phenomenal job! We are proud of how you represented NWMS! In addition - a big shout out to our All County Band students for participating in the All County Band Clinic last week!

Parents, Interim Progress Reports will be emailed to all parents on Thursday of this week. Please review your child's grades in PowerSchool.

Students, please locate your One Card this afternoon and prepare your bookbag for school this week.

Wishing everyone a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Viking Community,

Last week I emailed to share that there would be a possibility that school nutrition staff members would not be on site today, Monday, 11/27.  This indeed came true today.  At this time, we are not certain of school nutrition staff plans for tomorrow or the remainder of the week.

First, let me say “Thank You” to you so many staff members for making meals happen for our students today!  The day started early as we put breakfast together and then started immediately planning for lunch. We are so thankful to everyone who jumped in to help – it was a true team effort!

While it was not an easy situation to navigate – with the collaborative effort - we made it work and all students were served either corn dog nuggets or a PB&J.  We also ensured that everyone had milk or juice, an apple and a bag of chips, and for some we were able to provide a doughnut pack.

As we continue our planning for tomorrow and beyond, we need to be prepared for all possible options. To prepare for the worst-case scenario, we are making sure that students take their devices home today (which is a normal practice for NWMS). Mrs. Stringer has created a Remote Learning tab on our school website to help parents navigate remote learning should it be needed at any time this school year.  Please understand that I am not saying that the district has called for a remote learning day tomorrow – they simply told us to be prepared for a worst-case scenario. Please stay tuned to local news, check the GCS website, and watch for communication from me as well.

Again, thank you all for everything you do in support of our students, staff, and school community.

With tremendous gratitude,

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends! We are looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning! We have so much to be thankful for and being a Viking is at the top of the list!

Don't forget to take a few minutes this afternoon to clean out your bookbag, remove metal binders, umbrellas, etc. and locate your One Card for tomorrow morning.  If you have damaged or lost your One Card please bring $5.00 to school tomorrow to purchase a new card.

We have not received an update to the message that I sent out on Friday regarding cafeteria services on Monday.  If I receive additional information, I will forward that information to you as soon as possible.

Wishing everyone a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

This is Mrs. Francisco with an important message from GCS regarding food services on Monday, 11/27.

You may have heard that some GCS school nutrition staff may be planning a walkout on Monday, November 27. GCS is aware of the concerns raised by school nutrition employees and we are actively working to address these issues.

Our top priority is the well-being of our students, and we want to assure you that students will be served meals on Monday, November 27.

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Mrs. Francisco

Attendance Matters

Student attendance is very important to us! As of Friday, Nov. 17th students who have missed 6 or more days of school are considered chronically absent. It is very important that students are in school each day and that they are on time and prepared to learn. Please remember that students need to be in homeroom each day by 8:30 and that all students should be picked up no later than 3:50 from the car rider line. We appreciate your attention to these times and your on-going cooperation.

November 13-17

Reminders and Updates

Congratulations to the 7th and 8th Grade Band and Orchestra classes - led by Mr. Walter, Ms. Hurley, and Mr. Brooks - for a wonderful concert held this past Thursday!

We care deeply about your child's attendance in school! At this time, students who have missed 5 or more days are considered Chronically Absent.  Remember, attendance matters - strive to be at school each day and on time.  Please also limit early dismissals and stay in school for the entire learning day.  We are required to send home district letters when students have 3, 6 or 9 unexcused absences.  You may have received one of these district generated letters this past week.  You can send in notes to have absences changed from unexcused to excused so that you do not continue to receive these letters.  Excuse notes are to be turned in to the basket in Front Commons when you arrive in the morning.  Please send a note within 3 days of an absence.

Wishing everyone a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We are excited to kick off the beginning of the 2nd Quarter on Monday! As a reminder, report cards will be emailed home on 11/14. It is very important that we have your correct email address on file. If you are not receiving emails from our school please call 336-605-3333 and ask to speak to our Data Manager, Mrs. Ramana.

Please remind students to check Lost & Found - there are around 30+ lunch boxes in the bin that need to be taken home. Please also remind students that when they get a new One Card that their old One Card is deactivated and will no longer work to scan into school, the bus, or be used in the lunchroom/media center. Students, check your bookbags this afternoon and get prepared for school on Monday. Locate your One Card and place it with your things so that you don't forget it in the morning.

Wishing everyone a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

October 23-27

Reminders and Updates

Greetings Vikings! We are nearing the end of the 1st quarter and I want to remind all students and parents to please review your grades in PowerParent. If you need assistance creating your account please review the directions on our website under the parent tab.

A second message will be going out today to certain families of students who have consistently not been bringing their One Card to school. If a student needs to replace a lost or damaged One Card they can bring $5.00 to the office on Mondays or Wednesdays to purchase a new card. It is a requirement that students wear their One Card throughout the school day. Students should use their One Cards in the lunch room each day and also in the Media Center. They scan their One Cards each morning when they enter the building and also when they get on/off the school bus. Thank you for your support in reminding your child to locate their card each morning before they leave the house.

Wishing everyone a great week,

Mrs. Francisco

One Cards

Please remind students to wear their One Cards throughout the school day. New cards can be ordered in the main office on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The replacement cost is $5.00.

Additional Calls Placed on Sunday, October 22:

Good afternoon select Viking Parents,

You are receiving this email because your child has not consistently been bringing their One Card to school.  They may have lost or misplaced their card.  If so, please send $5.00 to school on Monday or Wednesday this week so that they can bring the money to the office to order a new card.  From Oct. 2-19 your child manually entered their PowerSchool ID into the scan machine 3 or more times.  This means that they do not have their One Card on as they enter the school building.

When students have to manually enter their number at the scan station it causes long lines to form and slows down our morning arrival process.  In addition, wearing One Cards is an expectation and a safety protocol that we require each day.  Please help your student follow this requirement.  We greatly appreciate your support.  Again, new One Cards can be ordered by bringing $5.00 to school on either Monday or Wednesday.

Mrs. Francisco

Good evening Viking Parents,

This email is for parents that use our Car Rider Line in the morning and/or afternoon.  Please see below for a few reminders:

1.  In the morning, please unload your car if you are stationed anywhere between the crosswalk near the mobiles and the top spot near the front doors of the school.  If you are in this unloading zone and you do not unload your car you cause the entire line to get off track and the people behind you - who did unload correctly - then have to wait for you near the top of the line.  We need our line to move quickly and efficiently and we need all students to unload - even if you are in the back of the unloading zone. Please pay attention to our staff members that are on duty and follow their directives.

2. Please refrain from using your cell/mobile phone while in the car rider line.  Large gaps form when parents are on their cells and do not realize the line has started moving.

3.  In the afternoon our staff goes off duty at 3:50 and it is very important that all students are picked up by 3:50.  All parents that are using the car rider line should be on campus no later than 3:45 in order to be through the line and all students loaded by 3:50.  Thank you for your effort to be on time each day.

4.  Remind your student to put their One Card on before they exit the car.

Thank you,

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We have been contacted by the High School and asked to communicate with NWMS parents regarding middle school students attending Home Sporting Events at Northwest High School.

Starting with tomorrow's Home Football Game and moving forward for all high school sporting events, middle school students attending a game without their parent will need to bring a copy of the attached Permission Form.  If your student enters the gate with you and you are staying with them they will not need to bring a copy of this form.  If your child is attending the game with someone other than you, they need to bring a copy of this Permission Form with them to the game.

We have made copies for students to pick up in the main office and have also provided electronic copies to all staff members so that they can email the form to you.  In addition, I have attached a copy of the Permission Form to this email.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you for all you are doing to help create a safe environment at NWMS and NWHS sporting events.  We also want to remind all parents and students of the Clear Bag Policy that is place for all events at both schools.  We greatly appreciate your support!

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, October 8, 2023

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Below are important reminders:

  • There will be a food drive this week - Oct. 9-13 that will benefit Guilford Backpack Ministry.  Boxes for students to drop their food items will be under the overhang as they enter the front doors of the school each morning.
  • This Tuesday, October 10th is the 8th Grade Curriculum and Walk the Schedule Night 6:00-7:30: PTSO Spirit Wear will be available for purchase. The PTSO will also be collecting food donations for the food drive during this event. Parents will be able to visit Encore Classes from 6:00-6:30 and then visit all 4 Core Classrooms from 6:30-7:30.  We will rotate every 15 minutes through Cores 1-4.
  • October 11th is a Home Football Game.  Come out and support your Vikings!. PTSO Spirit wear will be available for purchase. The PTSO will also be collecting food donations for the food drive during this event.
  • The monthly Spotlight Breakfast will be held on Oct. 13th.  A Sign Up Genius for this event has been posted on the PTSO’s social media pages.
  • This past Friday marked the 28th day of the school year.  Students who have missed 3 or more days of school at this point in the year are considered chronically absent.  Remember - attendance matters!  Please be at school - on time and ready to learn - each day!  And please limit early dismissals as much as possible.  Thank you for your continued cooperation!
  • Students locate your One Cards and clean out your bookbag so that you are ready for school tomorrow.  Remember - limit the amount of metal in your bag so that you do not have to take your Chromebook out each day as you enter through the front doors.  Metal Binders combined with the Chromebooks cause the metal detectors to go off.
  • 8th Grade Parents - please note that as you enter the building for Walk the Schedule Night on Tuesday evening you will need to first enter through the front doors and go through the Scan Stations.  You will then travel to Encore Classes (all inside in the main building) from 6:00-6:30 before starting the visits in Core Classes from 6:30-7:30.  Please do not go straight to 8th grade mobiles without coming through the front doors of the school first. You will then be able to exit out lower commons to go to the mobile units and once you have gone through the scanners one time you will then be able to enter and exit freely through the lower commons doors as you transition to the 4 Core Classes from 6:30-7:30.

Below is an important message from Guilford Backpack Ministry:

If you or someone you know is struggling with higher food costs or the reduction in SNAP benefits, we are here to help!  Guilford Backpack Ministry volunteers bring shelf stable weekend meals to our school each month that will help feed the family of each student enrolled in the program. Our school’s counselors and social worker work directly with the parents to get you the bags of food, so that students can feel secure in the knowledge that confidentiality is a priority. If you would like more information, please contact Shawna Phelps at 336-605-3333 or you can fill out the application for Guilford Backpack Ministries food program at https://forms.gle/ookfHDpSXqFuvW1t6  You are not alone!

This week we want to thank the Summit Church for all the work they did around our campus for the Big Serve.  We are incredibly thankful for their continued partnership and all they do to support our school!

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Student Attendance Matters!  This past Friday was the 19th day of this school year and students that have missed two or more days as of Friday are considered Chronically Absent.  Remember - we need all students in school each day - on time and ready to learn!  Thank you for limiting late arrivals and early dismissals.

Tomorrow is SEL Tuesday and the lesson in the extended Homeroom will focus on Digital Citizenship and online privacy.  Attached to this email is a Home Activity that you can work through with your student on Tuesday night following the lesson.

One Wednesday all students will take the NWEA ELA Map Assessment.  Please make sure your student is well rested, has a great breakfast and brings their Chromebook to school fully charged.  Attached is a letter with additional information.

We have home sporting events this week.  Boys Soccer and Girls Volleyball play at home on Tuesday and Wednesday and Football plays at home Wednesday as well.

The PTO would like to remind all families to please join the PTO.  This is the final week of the Viking Cash Crusade.  Please use the PTO Website to join and donate to the Viking Cash Crusade.  Also - begin saving your can food for the annual Food Drive Competition between the middle and high school Oct. 9-13.  Attached is a flyer with additional information.

Students please make sure you check over your bookbag this afternoon and remove any items that are combining with your Chromebook to cause the scan stations to go off as you travel through.  Also, make sure you have your One Card ready for Tuesday morning.  Please remember to limit metal binders and do not bring umbrellas to school as they cause the scan stations to go off.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

We also want to remind all parents that our Car Rider Line ends each day at 3:50.  All parents need to be at the school and in the line by 3:50 each day.  We have several students not being picked up on time each day and our staff have meetings and after school events that we must attend starting at 3:50 each day.  Please be on time to pick up your car rider.  The bus office is able to process new bus requests so if you would like to sign up for a bus please contact our Data Manager Mrs. Ramana and fill out the Transportation Preference Form on the GCS Transportation Website.

Sunday, September 17, 2023

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend.  We begin this week with a very important reminder to all 7th grade families.  Immunizations are due for all 7th graders.  Any student who has not submitted updated/required immunizations by the 30th day of school will be required to remain at home until records are turned in/updated.  Please see the attached documents as a reminder.  Please bring your updated records to the school this week.

As we begin this week we want to remind everyone that this past Friday was the 14th day of the school year.  As of Friday, students who have missed 1 or more days of school are considered chronically absent.  Remember - attendance matters - strive to be at school each day - on time - and ready to learn.  We also want to remind students to have their One Card prepared for Monday morning - is it packed and ready with your belongings?  Please remember to not bring umbrellas to school and to limit the amount of metal in your bookbags because metal binders combined with Chromebooks cause the scan stations to go off when students walk through.

Below is a message from the NWMS Theatre Booster:

Break a leg on auditions! It will be a competitive process and we know there is so much talent in the NW Community. We wish everyone an audition that provides growth and learning.

Audition Dates:

September 19th - Middle School Auditions at NW Guilford High School

September 20th OR 21st - High School Auditions at NW Guilford High School

September 22nd - Call Backs 4:45 pm - 8:00 pm

 Schedule for Auditions:

4:45 - Arrive at HS and register.  Just like rehearsals, there will be no after school study hall. Please arrange for your student to be picked up from the middle school and dropped off at the high school.

5:00 - Vocal Warm Ups

5:15 - Auditions Begin

  • Vocal Auditions in small groups
  • waiting and time to change if needed
    • While small groups are auditioning, others will wait in the HS Cafeteria. Have them bring homework, snacks, water bottle, clothes to dance in and something to keep them busy. The Cafeteria will be a quiet space
  • Choreo Auditions in small groups
    • after choreography auditions, your student can text you for a ride home

There will be no special requests for audition slots / times. They will be randomly assigned as students register.

What Happens Next

Call Backs will be emailed to individuals via the email provided on the audition form. If you don't get a call back, it does not mean that you aren't casted. Cast list will be sent individually Friday with more instructions and info about the first rehearsal. Rehearsals will start at 4:45 and will be the responsibility of individual parents to arrange for their child to be there on time.

How you can support your child:

  • Preparation - students were given everything they needed for auditions during the musical review (music and tracks). A shared google folder was also sent out.
  • Well rested and hydrated! Water really helps those vocal cords!
  • Tell them they are amazing!
  • Remind them of future opportunities. Crew Opportunities will be announced post auditions and Community Theatre Auditions are posted in the FaceBook group.

Upcoming Events:

ITS Meetings (NWMS) on September 18th to elect officers and then the first Monday of each month

Sunday, September 10, 2023

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We are ready to begin Week 3 of the 23-24 school year! The most important message for this week is for 7th grade parents. As a reminder we must have on file your updated Vaccine Record. Any student that has not submitted their required vaccines by the 30th day of school will be required to be suspended. Please bring a hard copy of your child's vaccines to school if you have not already done so.

A few additional reminders:

1.  Please remember to wear your One Card to school each day.  For new students, we have taken all pictures and are in the process of ordering your cards - you should have them soon.

2. Please note that bookbags that have metal binders are causing the Scan Stations to go off each morning. Please look through your student's bookbag and encourage them to use a different type of binder if the metal one they are using is causing the Scan Station to go off in the morning.  Please also do not send umbrella's to school - wear a rain jacket instead.  Student's Chromebooks - when they are not combined with other types of metal in a bookbag - do not cause the Scan Stations to go off but if a student has any other type of metal in the bag we are finding that the student has to remove the Chromebook and walk through while holding it out in front of them.  Please assist with this by making sure there is no additional metal in the bookbag to combine with a Chromebook.

3.  Thank you for remembering to send in notes with your student if you plan to pick them up early from school.  Also remember that we limit pickups after 3:00 to emergencies only.

4.  Clubs begin this week.  Please see below for specific club dates and there is also a document attached to this email that outlines more specifics about each club.  Not all clubs are starting this week but the ones listed below are open to all students.  A student did not have to sign up in advance to attend one of the clubs - just show up and start having fun!  Look for more clubs to begin over the course of the next several weeks.

5.  Parents when you attend home or away sporting events please remember the following:

  1. All middle schools charge for all sporting events.   $5 for adults and $3 for students.
  2. All middle schools follow the GCS clear bag policy.  Please leave bags that are not clear in your car.  Staff members collecting money at the gate will be required to ask you to return any non-clear bags to your car.
  3. Middle Schools are cash only and do not take credit cards.

6.  We have now conducted our first Fire Drill and Tornado Drill for the 23-24 school year.  In the coming week we will also conduct our first Lockdown Drill.

7.  As many of you are aware, we started the school year without a Data Manager.  This has been very hard on all of us.  We are happy to report that our new Data Manager, Lalitha Ramana, will start at NWMS this Wednesday, 9/13.

This past week we celebrated a huge success when we learned that NWMS Exceeded Growth on last year's EOG Assessments!  We are proud of our students and staff and want to thank all of our parents for your continued support!

News from our PTSO:

A flyer for Viking Cash Crusade was sent home this week. We will now be accepting donations through September 30th. We are really hoping to successfully complete this fundraiser goal! After the new year, we will be accepting mini-grant applications from teachers and we want to be able to help as many teachers as possible with supplies for their classrooms that will directly impact our students! Viking Cash Crusade funds make this possible! Thank you to families that have already donated! We are excited to raffle off some amazing prizes in October!! This weekend, please help determine where your student charging station will be at home every night. Please keep the device in the same place every evening and make sure it is charging for use at school the next day. We will begin using devices in our classrooms on Tuesday morning. This weekend, we ask that you have students turn on their device at home and connect to your home WIFI. The device will pull software updates and will help our device registration process go smoother and faster on Tuesday morning.
  • If you do not have wifi access at home, please contact our Media Specialist or our School Counselors at school and we will do our best to secure a WiFi hotspot for your student to use with their Chromebook when they are at home.
  • We strongly encourage all parents to download and use GoGuardian on all student issued Chromebooks.  The GoGuardian Parent App Letter is linked on the Media Center page on the school website under Chromebooks and here is a direct link for more information: GoGuardian Parent App
  • Summer Reading Minutes are due in Beanstack by September 8th. Beanstack is linked in CLEVER on student devices. Students MUST enroll in the GCS Summer Break Challenge and enter their Summer Reading Minutes there to receive their Kersey Valley gift certificate. Additional information regarding our Summer Reading Challenge is available on our Media Center landing page on our school website (linked here). GCS Summer Reading Challenge Beanstack Link
  • Throughout the months of September and October, our speech therapist will conduct hearing screenings for all 6th grade students during the school day.  Parents will be notified if their child does not pass the screening protocol.
  • We have a new school Treasurer/Secretary - please join me in welcoming Alicia Nelson to our front office!  Mrs. Nelson started working this past Friday.
  • We also have a new Data Manager that will be starting the week of Sept. 11th.  Please welcome Lalitha Ramana to this role!
  • Additional Staff Changes include:
    • Mrs. Holt will be leaving NWMS and GCS to become a School Counselor in another district.  Mrs. Williams who is our current 7th Grade EC Inclusion Teacher will be moving into the EC Resource Classroom to replace Mrs. Holt.  Mrs. Kirwan, who is a current EC Teacher Assistant in our Adapted Classroom, will be taking over the 7th Grade EC Inclusion position.  These changes will begin to take place over the course of the next few weeks.

Important Message about Attendance:

Attendance is important and we need our students in school each day!  Friday marked the 5th day of the school year.  As of Friday, students who have missed 1 or more days are considered Chronically Absent.  Remember - attendance matters - strive to be here each day - on time - and ready to learn!

Have a great week and thank you for your continued support,

Mrs. Francisco

Monday, August 28, 2023

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

This is Mrs. Francisco calling/emailing with an update on how our 1st day went and a few reminders to help all of us for the remainder of the week.  We had a marvelous 1st day of school.  Students were incredible and we have the best of the best staff!  Thanks to everyone for making it a great first day!

Today students received their new One Cards.  These cards are now Tap-n-Go cards so students will tap them at a new tap reader instead of scanning them like they did last year.  For this reason it is very important that the cards not be defaced in anyway with hole punches, stickers, or markers.  The Tap Stations are very sensitive and will not read cards that have been damaged or altered.  It is important that old One Cards be destroyed as they will not work at our new stations.

Every student at NWMS is required to wear their One Card around their neck with their lanyard each day.  Everyone was provided a lanyard and a plastic sleeve to protect their new One Card.  The only students who will manually enter a number into the Tap Stations tomorrow are new students who do not yet have a One Card.  NWMS students are expected to always have their One Cards on throughout the day.  This is a safety measure that allows us to quickly identify everyone on our campus and alerts us if someone is walking on campus without a valid picture ID card.  Please talk to your students about the importance of School Safety and why it is so important that we always be able to quickly identify who each student is.

It is also important that all car rider students know/have memorized their Car Tag number and that they come to their assigned table in the cafe when their number is entered into the Teams Chat each afternoon.  This afternoon, we had numerous students who did not come to the cafe when their number was entered and we had to re-enter and call for some students multiple times.  Please remember that all students need to be picked up no later than 3:50.  Again, we plead with you to please sign up and use the school buses if at all possible to allow our car rider line to be shorter and more manageable.  Please visit the GCS Transportation Website to sign up for a bus.

The morning arrival process was very smooth and we thank you for all you did this morning to help us maintain a safe arrival.  A few items that caused the Scan Stations to go off were metal pencil boxes that we asked students to not bring back to school. We look forward to seeing all students tomorrow. Thanks again and have a great night.

Mrs. Francisco

Sunday, August 27, 2023

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

This is Mrs. Francisco calling with your weekly updates.  We are so excited to welcome students back to school tomorrow morning!  The 23-24 school year will be the best yet!

We enjoyed seeing everyone at Open House.  Thank you for your cooperation and patience as Open House was our very first day with new Scan Stations being turned on.  We learned a great deal that night and we feel prepared to start using them tomorrow morning as students enter.  Here are a few reminders to help us have a smooth start:

  • We will begin the unloading of buses and car riders at 8:00 am.  Students are not allowed to be dropped off from any location other than our official car rider line or a school bus.  Students are not allowed to be dropped off prior to 8:00 am.  A staff member at our Car Rider Line will begin the unloading process promptly at 8:00 am.  Please do not unload your car until you see that staff member indicate that the line has started.
  • For Car Riders: If you are one of the approximately first 15 cars in line you will unload at 8:00 to begin our line movement.  We unload the entire area alongside the covered walkway and down to the crosswalk at the Mobiles.  If you are in this section of the Car Rider Line it is imperative that you exit your car and walk up the sidewalk to the front doors of the school.  Then the next car (right behind the crosswalk lines at the mobiles) will drive all the way up to the #1/top spot and begin the second group to unload (and so on until the entire line is empty).  Please follow the directions of our staff members that are out on duty and unload your car at the correct time.  Do not stay in your car if you are in the unload area in hopes of getting let off closer to the top of the line.  This will cause everyone behind you to get off track.  If it is raining heavily we may alter this plan and only unload the first 9 spots that are beside the covered walkway.  Please pay attention and be on the lookout for the staff member giving directions if it is raining heavily.
  • As students enter the front doors of the school they will walk through (one at a time) the Scan Station.  A nice way to remember items that are typically setting off the detectors is "BLUE".  B = binders (metal), L = laptops (but not our student Chromebooks - whew!), U = umbrellas, and E = eyeglass cases.  Students do not need to take items out of their bags in anticipation of an item setting off the scanners.  They just need to keep their bag intact and walk through the scan station.  If something is detected we will send them to a table to have their bag checked.
  • Please remember that NWMS does not allow smoking or vaping of any type of device and if these items are located during the morning Scan Stations they will be confiscated and disciplinary consequences implemented immediately with parents being contacted to come to the school.  DO NOT bring any type of Vape to or on our campus.  No exceptions!
  • Students are allowed to bring a cell phone to school but it should always be in their bookbag and silenced unless given permission by a teacher to use it during a class activity.  There should be no cell phones out or in student hands as they enter the school and go through the scan stations.  Phones are not allowed to be taken to the bathroom or to lunch.  Phones will be confiscated and parents will be required to come to school to pick a confiscated phone up as needed.
  • All paperwork for sports try outs should be turned into Ms. Thomas in the gym by 8:30 or as soon as you get to school on Monday.  If your previous physical is over 395 days old you will need a new one.  All students trying out for a sport will need a new concussion form.  You must meet all eligibility requirements to try out and tryouts begin Monday/tomorrow immediately after school.  Please make sure you have a ride home after tryouts.
  • Attached is our Student/Family Handbook.  Please review for all policies.
  • A reminder to all 7th graders that you must have your updated vaccines and this documentation must be submitted by the 30th day of school.  Attached is information about this requirement.
  • Each teacher's grading policy is included in their Course Syllabus.  You should have received a copy of this at Open House and/or you will get a copy on the first day of school and it will also be covered at an upcoming Walk the Schedule Night (date TBD).  Please make sure you have secured your PowerParent Account so that you are able to check grades weekly in PowerSchool.  Please note that grades in PowerSchool are the official grades (not Canvas).
  • We will be giving students their Chromebook Devices this Friday.

Good afternoon NWMS Parents,

This afternoon at Open House from 3:00 - 7:00 our new Scan Stations will be running at the front entrance doors of our school.

This is the first day that these will be operational for us and we ask for your patience and cooperation tonight as you enter our school and pass through the Scan Stations.  We will be asking parents and students to enter one at a time and again - because this is our first day - this will take longer than usual.  Please be patient with us - we want tonight to be a fun and great kickoff to our great school year!

As a reminder - this is a school campus and no weapons of any type are allowed on our campus.  We ask parents to please limit the number of bags you bring into the school and please only have your student bring their bookbag if they want to run it through the scan stations.  We ask parents to use the Clear Bag policy if you wish to bring in your own personal purse or bag.  This will help speed up our process.  Leaving all bags (except student backpacks that you want to test) in your locked trunk will be the best practice for adults as they enter the school.

Thank you for your help this afternoon.

Mrs. Francisco

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

We are looking forward to seeing you at Open House tomorrow between the hours of 3:00-7:00 pm.  At Open House you will find tables for our PTO and we ask that you please consider joining our PTO tomorrow night.  They will also be selling Spirit Wear and sharing information about the Fall Viking Cash Crusade Fundraiser.

In addition to PTO we will have tables set up with representatives from Transportation and other community agencies in and around our Cafeteria.  In the Media Center you will be able to find our Counselors and our Data Manager should you have any questions about schedules or registration.  If you need a hard copy of your child's schedule you will also be able to pick it up in the Media Center tomorrow afternoon.

In our Main Office please stop by to register and receive your Car Tag number if you will use our Car Rider Line this school year.  Any student who gets picked up in the afternoon via our Car Rider Line will need to have a Car Tag and the student will need to know/memorize their number for the 1st day of school next Monday.  If your child takes medication at school you can also bring the Medical Authorization Form and the Medicine to Open House in our Main Office.

Our new Scan Stations at the front doors of the school are now set up.  If you want to test the contents of your bookbag you can bring the bookbag to Open House with you.  We look forward to seeing everyone - Open House is floating and you are welcome to join anytime between 3:007:00 pm.

Good afternoon NWMS Viking Families,

If you are receiving this email - that is awesome - it means we have a correct email in our system for your NWMS Viking Student!  Please check with friends and families of other NWMS students to make sure they also received this important communication.  If they did not - they need to provide us with an email address by calling 336-605-3333 and speak with our Data Manager, Signe Lee, to have a valid email address entered into our system.

Welcome to the 23-24 School Year!  We are ready to make this the best year yet for our Vikings and we are incredibly excited to kick-off the school year!  We will be emailing all parents Student Schedules on Monday, August 14th.  We will also have paper copies available at Open House.  Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, August 23rd.  It is a floating event from 3:00-7:00 pm. For updated information please use our School Website - it contains important information to help you have a successful year.

This year our students will travel through Scan Stations at the front entrance of the building.  Because of this, we are asking that you please limit the amount of heavy metal (think metal water bottles for example) from your student's backpack.  Please attempt to pack plastic items that will be less likely to set off the Scan Alarm on a daily basis.  We hope that the scan stations will be in place in advance of Open House so that you can bring items packed in your backpack to have a test/trial walk through.  I will notify you just as soon as we are ready/able for you to stop by and test your belongings in your bookbag.  Grade Level Supply Lists are located on our Website.

Also this year, we will return our cafeteria to pre-Covid processes and students will not have access to a microwave in the cafeteria.  Please plan accordingly for students to eat packed meals from home that do not require microwave preparation.  Hot lunch/food is available to be purchased from our cafeteria each day.

Attached to this email are several documents that we are asking you to review.  Below is a bulleted list of the items that are attached.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

  • Family Handbook - this handbook has critical information that will assist you throughout the school year.
  • Flyer for ECollect - this allows you to update your contact information directly into PowerSchool - please review this and update your information if it changes.
  • PowerSchool Flyer - this provides a QR code for setting up your PowerParent/PowerSchool account.  You will use the frequently in middle school and we strongly urge you to set this up.
  • Peachjar Flyer - this provides you information about the Peachjar App that GCS uses to push out GCS Information and School Flyers.
  • Lunch Application - in English and Spanish.  Please complete as soon as possible.  More information about this below as well.
  • Virtual Helpline Flyer - use this throughout the year for access to free tutoring and academic support.

In addition please visit the GCS Transportation Department by clicking here to gain information about Bus Routes/Transportation.

Finally, the federal waivers that allowed districts to provide free meals to all students have expired, so the district will resume its pre-pandemic meal prices, which are $1 for breakfast and $2.85 for lunch. We are asking all parents to fill out the meal benefits application at www.lunchapplication.com. Even if you don’t think you qualify for benefits, the information you provide will help our district qualify for federal grants and other funding that will benefit all children. You can find more information online at www.gcsnc.com/backtoschool23.

I typically send a NWMS Weekly Update message out each Sunday afternoon.  Sometimes I do this via phone and other times via email only.  Thank you for taking the time to read our Parent/Family Handbook and for all you are doing to prepare for the 23-24 school year!  It will be a great year to be a NWMS Viking!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Francisco

Happy Last Week of School NWMS Vikings!

We have a couple of messages from our Media Center:

  • Students who read for 900 minutes this summer will receive a Kersey Valley attraction certificate in the fall when we return to school! Students should register for the GCS Summer Reading Challenge and track their reading minutes in the Beanstack app that we use throughout our district now. Details about the Summer Reading Challenge and how to use Beanstack over the summer are on the Media Center page of our school website.
  • ALL library books were due back to the Media Center on May 26th. Please make sure you have returned all library books as soon as possible! Students may continue to read ebooks in both our school Destiny catalog and through the North Carolina Digital Library this summer.

Also - this past week students took their ELA and Math EOGs.  Scores have been provided to ELA and Math teachers who are able to communicate with you your child's scores.  We will send official score reports home when we mail report cards on June 21st.  Also - if your child was not proficient on the test last week they will have another opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency during the week of June 13-16th.  A letter was sent home on Thursday or Friday with any student who was not proficient on the Reading/ELA or Math EOG.  Please let your child's teacher know if your child will or will not be able to attend the remediation and retest week.  We should get Science scores back on Monday and will communicate the results of those scores and invite anyone who was not proficient on the Science test to remediation and retest week as well.

This will be a fun week of End of the Year celebrations.  All grade levels have something fun planned to celebrate and then we end the week with the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony on Friday at 9:30 am in the Northwest High Gym.

We want to thank you for your continued partnership this entire school year.  We hope you have a safe and fun Summer Break.  Open House for next year is scheduled for August 23rd from 3:00-7:00 pm.

Happy Memorial Day!  We hope you had a restful and special holiday with family and friends.

We will complete EOC and EOG Testing this week - see calendar below.  Our teachers, staff and students have been preparing all year for this week and we know our students are going to shine as they take their EOG assessments.  We ask that everyone get plenty of rest this week and wake up early, eat a good breakfast, and get to school ready to do your very best!  During testing this week, it is very important that students are on time to school (everyone should be in homeroom by 8:30). Testing will begin each day by 8:45. If students arrive after that time, they cannot enter a testing room.  Because all available staff is being utilized for testing, we will not be able to accommodate a supervised space for late students to wait until testing is over.  Please be on time each day this week.

•    Reminder to parents and students that Chromebooks should be charged for EOG testing this week and that students should bring their chargers to school for use during testing.

•    Reminder that ALL library books were due on Friday, May 26th. Please return all library books as soon as possible.

•    Students who wish to participate in the GCS Summer Reading Challenge should log their minutes on the Beanstack app. Currently, students access Beanstack on their Chromebooks but in the summer, there is an app for that! Mrs. Stringer will be providing information about our Summer Reading Challenge and how to access the Beanstack app on the Media Center page of our school website. Students who read for 900 minutes this summer will receive a certificate to Kersey Valley next fall!

Summer School for NWMS will be held this summer at Northern Middle School.  Any student with a final grade of F in a core class (ELA/Math/Science/SS) will be invited and expected to attend Summer School.  There are additional data points being used to invite students to Summer School and some letters have already been sent out inviting students.  If you have received one of these letters please follow the directions to register for Summer School.  Final Grades will be reviewed in the next couple of weeks and additional letters will be mailed to families with information about Summer School.

Students who do not show proficiency (passing score) on their EOG tests this week will be invited to a remediation/enrichment and retest week June 13-16th.  We will communicate with you just as soon as scores are reported from testing this week if your child needs to attend this remediation/enrichment/retest week.

Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

I hope you have enjoyed this beautiful weekend.

As we complete these final three week's of the school year and near the dates for End of Grade Tests, please remind your child that our school expectations remain in full effect all the way to the final day.  Recently, we have had increased use of negative language and instances where students are using racial based comments that are inappropriate and hurtful.  We will not tolerate bullying in our school and the use of targeted comments that are hurtful and hateful will be addressed with parent involvement and the use of our Student Code of Conduct.  I am asking for your support with our school seeing improvement in this area for the remainder of the school year and moving forward for next year as well.

We are in need of a few additional proctors (parent volunteers) for EOG testing on May 30th, 31, and June 1st.  Proctors assist in monitoring testing sites and need to be available from 8:30-1:30 on these days.  If you are willing and able to help, please email our testing coordinator, Heather Lenard at lenardh@gcsnc.com.

A special message will be sent to 8th grade parents from our PTSO and the 8th grade parents who are putting together a very special dance on June 8th for our 8th graders.

We want to thank all our parents for the support you showed our staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. We are so thankful for Jessica Clements and Erin Travland and the team of parents that assisted them with coordinating all the treats and special events/gifts this past week. Also this past week we had an amazing Book Fair and I want to thank Book Fair Chair, Paige Riordon, and all the parent volunteers (many who were there every single day) who made the entire week totally fantastic!

Parents, did your child purchase Slime last week at the Book Fair?  If so, we are asking that you please require that they keep the Slime at home the remainder of the school year.  Also, recently students have been squirting other students with their water bottles.  We cannot have students creating wet/dangerous floors and getting other students wet during the school day.  Please speak with your student about this inappropriate behavior.  Also - please remind them to bring their One Cards to school every day.  It is taking a large amount of time each morning manually entering students into the scan station because they forgot or have lost their One Card.

Also a reminder that May 9th is Interim Report Day. Reports will be emailed to all parents.  Please communicate with your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns about the Interim Progress Report.  We ask the parents of any student with a D or an F in any course to communicate and/or have a conference with your child's teacher.

We have a very important announcement from our CF and AP - Testing Coordinators: We are looking for volunteers to proctor for our EOG tests during testing on May 31 and June 1. Proctors must be at least 18 years old and be available during the hours of 8:00 and 1:00. Please email Heather Lenard: lenardh@gcsnc.com Please provide your name, date of availability, and phone number.

This Friday, 5/12, join the fun for the International Thespian Society - Northwest Little Theatre performance of Thank You For The Music from 7:00-8:30 at the Summit Church in Oak Ridge! If you have seen Grease, Our Town, or Footloose you know these kids and Mr. Luck are beyond amazing! Good afternoon NWMS Vikings,

Please remember to charge your Chromebook tonight and bring it to school tomorrow with your individual ear pods for the Math NWEA Assessment.  All students will take this test during the morning hours.

This coming Wednesday is Administrative Professionals Day!  Please help me shower our front office staff with appreciation this Wednesday.  We are so thankful for Vickie Oakley, School Treasurer; Morgan Watson, Front Office Support; Shawna Phelps, Front Office Support and Counseling Support; and Signe Lee, Data Manager!  They keep our school running efficiently and assist with so many tasks each day - we are very thankful for ALL they do!

A huge thanks this week to Mrs. Williams and our Student Council for hosting a Career Fair on Tuesday.  There are several other special events happening this week including the Book Fair Preview for the Book Fair that will open the next week.  Don't forget to mark your calendars for Monday, May 1st - that will be Family Night at the Book Fair!  See below for other important dates and information for this week:
