Public Invited to Discuss Aycock Middle School Name
The Guilford County Board of Education is asking for the community’s input on the possibility of renaming Aycock Middle School.
At its meeting Thursday night, the board approved a process to reconsider the school name. First, a survey will be made available to the Aycock Middle community online and at the school on July 15 and will remain open until July 22. Once the survey is complete, a community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on July 26 at Aycock Middle.
Acknowledging the controversy surrounding Governor Charles B. Aycock, his legacy and the potential of renaming the school, the board voted to hold a public forum on the possibility of renaming the school.
The board’s Facilities Naming Nomination Committee reviewed research regarding the history of the name and life of Governor Aycock, who served as North Carolina’s governor from 1901-1905, after receiving approval from the board in February. The committee found Aycock, known as the “Education Governor,” has been lauded for his stance on education and was a major architect of a white supremacy campaign in the late 19th century.
