Board Approves Names for Southeast, Andrews Facilities
At its meeting on Tuesday, the Board of Education approved two names for athletic facilities in honor of former coaches and teachers who served many years in Guilford County.
The board approved the name Coach Kevin Callahan Field for the baseball field at Southeast High, following a 30-day period of public comment. Callahan was an educator in the exceptional children program at Southeast High for more than 33 years and was the varsity head baseball coach for the last 24 years. He had retired from the district at the end of the 2012-13 school year, just prior to his untimely death.
The board also approved the name George E. Foree Gymnasium for the gymnasium at Andrews High, following a 30-day period of public comment. Foree served as the head basketball coach at the former William Penn High School and Andrews High. In 1968, Foree directed William Penn High School to a 4-A State Championship in basketball. When Andrews High opened that fall, he transitioned to the head coach position there. In addition to coaching, he taught driver’s education, health and physical education.
