Southeast High Construction Nears Completion
As construction nearly comes to close at Southeast High, several of the district’s priority projects are set to begin.
Crews are putting the finishing touches on Southeast High’s athletics and performing arts project. Construction on the field house and interior renovations are complete, and work continues on the concession stands/restrooms at the baseball and softball fields. At the performing arts building, workers have installed windows and doors, and mechanical and electrical work continues inside.
The project at Southeast is one of the last two original 2008 bond projects. The other is the HVAC replacement and renovation project at Ragsdale, which is close to completion.
Meanwhile six of nine priority projects are moving forward. GCS is taking or about to take bids for projects at Bluford Elementary, Dudley High, High Point Central High and Hunter Elementary. Contracts are being signed for the Northwood Elementary kitchen expansion project and work has already started on Northwest High’s road and parking lot improvements.
Additionally, last week the Board of County Commissioners approved the transfer of money saved from the Southwest High project to Northwood and High Point Central projects. $50,000 will go to Northwood Elementary’s contingency fund to offset any unforeseen costs, and $735,612 will go to repair plaster ceiling and walls in High Point Central High’s auditorium, in addition to renovations and repairs already planned at the school.
In 2008, Guilford County voters approved $457 million in school construction bonds. To date, more than $350 million has been spent or is currently under contract. Money saved on earlier 2008 bond construction projects and redirected funds from the Airport Area High School project are paying for six of the nine priority projects in the district. Before GCS can use any bond funds, county commissioners must approve the project and any transfer of funds must also be approved.
Commissioners voted not to release money needed to start construction on the remaining three priority projects at Western High, Smith High and Guilford Middle until the summer of 2016. The district estimates these projects will cost an additional $46 million.
