GCS Collecting Bids for Final Priority Projects in Spring
Guilford County Schools is taking bids and determining the maximum cost of priority construction projects that are set to begin during the next year.
The county board of education received an update on construction projects at its meeting Thursday night. Out of the nine priority projects discussed, staff is working on the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for two, Bluford Elementary renovations and Hunter Elementary’s school replacement. Bids are expected in the spring for projects at Dudley High, Guilford Middle, Northwest High, Smith High and Western High; and work is underway on Northwood Elementary’s school kitchen expansion.
Staff is delaying determining the GMP for the renovations for the High Point Central projects until design adjustments can be made to account for new requirements from the city. The board will reconsider designs for the new cafeteria at its meeting on Dec. 17.
The projects are being paid for by money saved on earlier 2008 bond construction projects and redirected funds from the Airport Area High School project. In 2008, Guilford County voters approved $457 million in school construction bonds. To date, more than $350 million has been spent or is currently under contract. At this point, county commissioners have only released funds for six of the nine projects and will consider releasing the funds for the remaining three projects this summer. Before GCS can use any bond funds, county commissioners must approve the project and any transfer of funds must also be approved.
The last of the original 2008 bond projects is almost complete. On Thursday, staff reported the new athletic and performing arts facilities at Southeast High are ready to use, however the project won’t be officially complete until final touches can be made next year.
Additional funds saved by the 2008 bond projects and the nine priority projects may be used for several additional projects discussed by the board earlier this month. The Board of County Commissioners is expected to discuss releasing those funds at its meeting on Dec. 3.
The board also voted to use money originally slotted for the Dorothy Kendall Kearns Academy for additional security upgrades at schools.
