Washington Post Names GCS Schools Among Top in the Country
Penn-Griffin School for the Arts earned recognition among the nation’s top 100 high schools, according to new rankings released today by The Washington Post. The school was ranked second among North Carolina high schools and 76th in the nation.
Guilford County Schools took four of the top 10 spots in the state. Grimsley High ranked third in the state and 128th in the national rankings. Page High and Weaver Academy also ranked among the top 10 schools in North Carolina, coming in ninth and tenth, respectively.
The Early College at Guilford was named by The Washington Post as one of the country’s top-performing schools with elite students. The schools in this category were not included in the overall rankings due to their exceptional quality, selectivity and students’ above-average standardized test scores.
A total of 15 Guilford County Schools were included in The Washington Post’s America’s Most Challenging High Schools list, which uses the Challenge Index to rank high schools. This formula is a measure of the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given in a school divided by the number of graduating seniors. The annual list includes only schools that have an index of at least 1.000, which means students took as many placement exams in a year as the school had graduates. Only about 9 percent of the approximately 22,000 public high schools in the United States made the list.
