Allen Jay Middle Receives $500,000 Donation
The Phillips Foundation has continued its generosity toward Guilford County Schools (GCS). At last night's State of Our Schools event, the district announced that the foundation had pledged $500,000 to help support and expand Allen Jay Middle, a preparatory academy in High Point.
The school was part of the 2012 Strategic Plan and opened in the fall of 2013 with its first class of 110 fifth-graders. Allen Jay Middle combines a strong emphasis on leadership and college readiness with a high-energy teaching style using music and movement to keep students engaged.
"The donation from the Phillips Foundation will allow additional scholars to experience the unique, innovative instructional model at Allen Jay Preparatory Academy," says Principal Kevin Wheat. "Additional support structures and academic services will be used to accelerate students toward academic excellence."
The school will expand next year to serve fifth- and sixth-grade students. Interested students from anywhere in Guilford County can apply starting tomorrow at the GCS Magnet Fair from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Pavilion. The program is one of 54 magnet opportunities in GCS, all of which will be sharing information at the fair. Parking and admission are free.
In addition to the Phillips Foundation's donation to support Allen Jay Middle, the foundation also donated more than $2 million to jump-start a new GCS partnership with Teach For America.
