GCS Welcomes Thousands of Students Back to School
It's the first day of school for tens of thousands of students across Guilford County Schools (GCS). School staff, parents and students are ready to kick off the 2013-14 year.
It takes a lot of preparation to get ready for a new school year. For the 2013-14 year, GCS staff will manage 126 schools and a total of 337 buildings - that's 12.2 million square feet of facilities. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the average home size in America is 2,392 square feet. That means GCS workers take care of the equivalent of 5,108 average-size homes every day!
How many staffers keep the district running every day? Well, GCS is one of the largest employers in Guilford County, with 10,404 workers, including 604 new employees hired this summer.
Some great news? All classrooms are fully staffed on this first day of school; Human Resources worked hard this summer to make sure highly qualified teachers are in every classroom across the district - including 418 teachers who are new to GCS, and 188 teachers who are new to teaching.
But how many students are walking into those classrooms? As of Aug. 22, 71,814 pre- K-12 students were enrolled in GCS. Remember, those numbers change every day as new students enter GCS.
Jesse Wharton Elementary expects more than 500 students to be part of the giraffe team this year (the giraffe is the school mascot). Staff wore matching black JWES t-shirts on the first day, as they greeted families outside, directed traffic in the circle around the school and pointed students and parents to the correct classrooms.
