GCS Class of 2013 Offered $126.5 Million in Scholarships

Anne Bennett Osteen had a choice to make, a choice many of her peers would envy. The Page High senior was offered both the Morehead-Cain Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Trinity Scholarship to Duke University.

Osteen's offers, and many more like them, helped the Guilford County Schools Class of 2013 earn $126,579,480 in scholarship offers. The total reflects athletic, academic, fine arts, merit, need-based and military scholarships and grants.

Topping the list of scholarships earned was Grimsley High, with more than $14 million. Northwest High and Page High followed closely behind with more than $11 million apiece. Smaller schools can also play a big role in the scholarship totals. The Academy at Smith, which included 50 graduates, earned more than $5.6 million in scholarship offers.

Three GCS students this year received the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which is distributed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to 1,000 minority students nationwide and provides full tuition through graduation to any school of the students' choosing. Those three students are Jahbril Cook from Weaver Academy, Amber Jones from Penn-Griffin School for the Arts and Moriah Davis from Dudley High.

College Tech Prep scholarships from Guilford Technical Community College will be awarded after July 1 and therefore haven't been included in this total. GTCC offers a significant number of scholarships to students who are College Tech Prep completers in one of 13 career and technical areas.

So is Osteen a Tar Heel or a Blue Devil? Osteen accepted the Morehead-Cain Scholarship and will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall. But don't worry, Duke fans - GCS students received all three of the Duke Trinity Scholarships awarded this year.
