Two School Calendars May Be Extended for 2013-14

Two Guilford County schools would start school two weeks sooner under a proposed calendar change reviewed by the Board of Education on Thursday. The board voted to submit the revisions for a 10-day period of public comment. The added time would give students more opportunities to master skills and will also allow more in-depth training for teachers.

Under the changes, Parkview Village Elementary and Allen Middle would add 10 instructional days to the 2013-14 calendar. The first day for those schools would be Aug. 12, 2013, and the last day would be June 10, 2014.

The extended calendars are designed to aid the transformation process already in progress at Parkview Village and now beginning at Allen Middle. The extended calendar will provide both schools with additional opportunities to enhance instructional programs for students and professional development for staff. The calendars are based on ones in place at Wiley Elementary and Oak Hill Elementary, which have made remarkable turnarounds in recent years.

The public is invited to comment on the proposed changes until June 10. Comments can be sent to or submitted by sending comments or U.S. mail to District Relations Department, Attn: Calendars, Guilford County Schools, 712 N. Eugene St., Greensboro, NC 27401.
