GCS and Pearce Elementary Win United Way Award
GCS and Pearce Elementary School are celebrating a meaningful award, after they were named winners of the United Way of North Carolina Spirit of North Carolina Awards for Campaign Excellence.
These spirit awards provide statewide recognition for outstanding commitment and support to communities through local United Way involvement. Pearce was selected as the top individual school in North Carolina and GCS as the top school district in North Carolina.
Pearce Elementary students and staff set a goal to increase their United Way donations by 10 percent. Team leaders worked hard to build excitement for the goal, including incentives like staff jeans days and special lunch time. Students who supported the campaign had the chance to throw a pie in the face of their principal, Erik Naglee. The school also worked with the community to host a free family fun night where parent-donated baskets were raffled.
After all their efforts, the school not only met its goal, but surpassed it, increasing total donations by 15 percent for a total of $10,000.01, one of the largest gifts for the United Way ever for a public school.
GCS employees raised a total of $334,516 for the Greensboro and High Point United Ways and students raised $37,302 for a total of $371,818, exceeding the district's goal by nearly $21,000.
