Board of Education Welcomes Newly Elected Members

Six newly elected members of the Guilford County Board of Education were sworn in by the Honorable Patrice Hinnant, a GCS alumna, at the start of Tuesday's meeting.

Joining the board for the first time are Linda Welborn, representing District 5, and Rebecca Buffington, representing District 7. At-large board member Sandra Alexander, District 9 board member Amos Quick, District 3 board member Darlene Garrett and District 1 board member Carlvena Foster were all re-elected to the board.

Welborn has served the Southeast-area community since 2002. She has been an active member of the Forest Oaks Community Association, the Southeast Educational Advancement Coalition and the Southeast Guilford Community Association. She also serves on the Southeast Elementary Building Advisory Team.

Buffington has been an active volunteer in the school system for the past 15 years, and has served as a PTA President at General Greene Elementary, Mendenhall Middle and Page High. During that time, she was recognized for leading multiple award-winning initiatives and grant projects in the schools as well as being named the Guilford County Council of PTAs Volunteer of the Year and twice as PTA President of the Year.

Board members Alan Duncan and Amos Quick were re-elected to serve as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the board, respectively.
