GCS Names Director of Communications

The Guilford County Board of Education named Cynthia Robbins Shah-Khan director of communications at its meeting Thursday, Sept. 27. Shah-Khan will manage media relations, internal and external communications, public relations and GCSTV 2. She will report to Chief of Staff Nora Carr.

Shah-Khan has nearly 18 years of communications experience, with roles in television news, nonprofit management and school public relations.

As media relations supervisor for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Shah-Khan’s proactive media-relations approach resulted in increased positive local and national news coverage. She also earned top national awards for successful public relations campaigns ranging from increasing student immunization rates to informing the public about capital needs and projects. As executive director of the Bruce Irons Camp Fund, she increased volunteer and student participation by developing new partnerships with public schools, community and nonprofit groups, individual donors and foundations.

Shah-Khan has a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She has served on numerous community boards focused on improving outcomes for children and youth. Shah-Khan’s first day with GCS was Oct. 1.
