Board Terminates Relationship with McNair Contractor

The Guilford County Board of Education voted Tuesday evening to terminate its contract with Farley Associates, Inc., the contractor responsible for the construction of McNair Elementary, located at 4603 Yanceyville Road in Brown Summit.

The decision came after numerous defaults of the contractor, including its default on completing the project on time and then its failure to make sufficient progress to reach a new completion date during recent weeks.

“We are disappointed with this decision, but it was a necessary decision,” said Northern Region Superintendent Randy Shaver. “We certainly understand the frustration of our families, and we share these same feelings. Our administration is doing everything we can to address a situation that is challenging for everyone concerned.”

The bonding company received notification of the board’s action this morning, and will review their options for moving forward. With this most recent action, all timelines for construction will have to revisited.

“While we are working hard to keep parents and the community informed, please know that the situation regarding McNair is still very fluid, and is now being handled in part by our legal counsel,” said Nora Carr, chief of staff. “We sincerely apologize for any frustration or confusion the delayed opening of McNair has caused our families.”

McNair Elementary continues to operate at two locations – Jesse Wharton Elementary and Brightwood Elementary. McNair Elementary serves approximately 450 students in grades K-5.

“As we continue to update our McNair families about the next steps of construction, our main priority continues to be our McNair teachers and students, ensuring they have a supportive and positive environment to teach and learn,” said Shaver.
