GCS Receives $95,000 Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant
Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $95,000 Lowe's Toolbox for Education® grant to Guilford County Schools (GCS) to support Guilford Parent Academy's online academic content provided by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH).
Guilford Parent Academy partners with HMH to make its digital academic content available so GCS students, staff and parents may access it at home as well as at school. GCS is one of only two districts in the nation and the only district in North Carolina to provide this digital academic content for free. This year, the cost will be shared through generous funding from Lowe's and our local Businesses for Excellence in Education.
"This grant from Lowe's will help us reach even more parents as we focus on reading in the home," said Lisa Gardner, Guilford Parent Academy and community partnerships coordinator.
The grant will focus on Parent Academy's reading initiative and will utilize HMH's Destinations Reading content, which supports K-8 literacy. For some parents, particularly those from limited educational backgrounds, this exposure may be the first opportunity to understand their role as reading role models.
"Lowe's is committed to recognizing and supporting efforts that enrich the lives of our neighbors and customers," said Marshall Croom, chairman of Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation. "By supporting Guilford County Schools, we believe we are contributing to a cause that's important to our customers and employees and helping build a stronger foundation for the children who will be tomorrow's employees, homeowners and community leaders."
Lowe's Toolbox for Education provides the financial tools to improve schools throughout the United States. Lowe's signature education grant program has donated more than $30 million to 6,000 K-12 public schools since 2006, benefitting more than 3.5 million schoolchildren.
Since its inception in 1957, Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation has helped communities nationwide through employee volunteerism and financial contributions. In 2011, Lowe's and the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation together contributed more than $32 million to support communities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
