Campus Crime Stoppers Lets Students Text a Tip
Students in elementary school through college have a new option for connecting with the Greensboro Police Department. The Campus Crime Stoppers program allows young people to text a tip about suspicious activity on their campus.
The anonymous reporting program is designed to help keep schools safe and supplement the programs in place through Guilford County Schools (GCS). GCS students and parents can already report offenses anonymously to the district by using the form at www.gcsnc.com/bullying . School resource officers, counselors, teachers and principals are also able and willing to help in situations of harassment or bullying.
Tips sent via text are made anonymous by a system that removes the sender's number from the text. The student is given a confidential code and instructions on how to follow up with the report. Coordinators can converse via text with the student, who can send the word "stop" whenever he or she is ready to end the session.
Texts can be sent to 274637 (CRIMES) with the keyword FIVE O (all alphabetical) at the beginning of the message to indicate that the tip refers to the Greensboro area. School and district guidelines regarding cell phone usage should always be followed.
