GCS Announces Leadership Changes at Page, Oak Hill
Guilford County Schools (GCS) announced principal appointments at two schools today. Patrice Faison, current principal at Oak Hill Elementary and North Carolina Principal of the Year, will become the new principal of Page High in Greensboro. Ashton Clemmons, who currently serves as assistant principal at Oak Hill, will assume leadership as the school's principal. Both appointments will be effective July 1.
Faison served as principal at Oak Hill for two years and led the school toward dramatic, positive change. When she joined the school in 2010, Oak Hill was considered one of the lowest performing in the state and had been awarded a $2.9 million federal School Improvement Grant for reform. In Faison's first year at Oak Hill, she raised the school's performance composite by 19.4 percentage points. The school was named one of the district's most improved schools in 2011.
Before joining Oak Hill, Faison served as principal at The Academy at Smith from 2007 to 2010, and with the assistance of teachers and parents, transformed the school from low-performing to an Honor School of Excellence with a 100 percent graduation rate.
Faison first began her career with GCS in 1995 as a third-grade teacher at Stokesdale Elementary. Five years later, she received National Board Certification. She holds a master's degree in school administration from North Carolina A&T State University, a bachelor's degree in education from Elizabeth City State University and is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In April 2012, she was named North Carolina Principal of the Year, the district's second since 1993.
Clemmons, who will become the new principal at Oak Hill, joined the school along with Faison in 2010. She played an important role in setting the school's new vision and supporting the transition of staff members, of which about 80 percent were new to the school. During her time as assistant principal, she has helped with staff development, data analysis and community outreach. She also created a student leadership and mentoring program for at-risk male students.
Before joining Oak Hill, Clemmons served as an assistant principal at Central Elementary in Eden, N.C., and as a first- and second-grade teacher at Cone Elementary in Greensboro and Club Boulevard Art and Humanities Magnet Elementary in Durham. She holds a Master of Education in School Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
