Guilford Parent Academy's Family Fun Day Huge Success!
A record number of parents, children and families made Guilford Parent Academy's second annual spring family event an overwhelming success. Approximately 5,000 people visited Camp Weaver and participated in free activities that included swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, climbing and other outdoor games. Entertainment, arts, crafts and family enrichment activities were also provided.
Guilford Parent Academy's Family Fun Day was sponsored by Guilford County Schools (GCS), Guilford County Association of Educators, Guilford Coalition on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, Guilford County Council of PTAs and the YMCA of Greater Greensboro. There was a 900 percent increase in attendance from the 2011 family event, Healthy Family Day, which recorded around 600 people. Guilford Parent Academy attributes this dramatic increase to great weather and increased community relations.
"We were thrilled by the attendance this year at Family Fun Day and even more excited that families had an opportunity to spend quality time together," said Jamie Cosson, executive director, YMCA Camp Weaver. "We look forward to working with Guilford Parent Academy and all the event sponsors over the summer and next school year to help every child succeed in and out of the classroom."
"Family Fun Day is our way to say thank you to the thousands of parents, caregivers and children across Guilford County that make our community a great place to learn and thrive," said Lisa Gardner, GCS coordinator for Guilford Parent Academy and partnerships. "By providing opportunities where families and children can participate in activities together, we can all reinforce the importance a strong family unit plays in the overall development of a child. Kudos to everyone involved and to the parents and students of Guilford County for a fantastic school year!"
