GCS Names Foley Principal of Eastern Guilford
Guilford County Schools (GCS) announced today that Marilyn Foley is assuming the leadership of Eastern Guilford High School, effective July 1. Foley has served as principal of Page High School since 2007.
During Foley's tenure at Page, the school has been named one of 16 Most Improved Schools twice, first in 2008 and then again in 2010. Under Foley's leadership, the school also has raised composite scores on state tests by 20 percentage points, improved graduation rates, and increased college scholarships.
Foley also was instrumental in helping Page earn the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Program authorization. IB student enrollment at the school has increased by 40 percent since 2007.
A veteran teacher, counselor and school administrator, Foley has served in leadership roles for GCS at six different schools. In addition to Page, these schools include: Aycock Middle, Falkener Elementary, Alamance Elementary, Oak View Elementary and Shadybrook Elementary. Foley joined GCS in 1990 as a school counselor at Millis Road Elementary.
"We believe Ms. Foley will build on the progress that has been made at Eastern Guilford and take it to the next level in terms of improving school culture, climate and student performance, " said Phyllis Martin, regional superintendent. "We're thrilled to welcome her to the southeastern region."
Greggory Slate, current principal of Eastern Guilford High, will serve in an administrative capacity with GCS next year. His placement for 2012-13 has not yet been determined. Slate has served as principal of Eastern since 2009. Slate joined GCS in 2006. He was the Lexington City Schools High School Teacher of the Year in 2006.
Under Slate's leadership, Eastern Guilford High increased its graduation rate from 70.9 to 82.5 percent, narrowed the achievement gap, expanded Advanced Placement offerings and increased student composite scores on state tests by 16.5 percentage points.
"Gregg Slate has worked hard to improve student achievement at Eastern Guilford, often under very difficult circumstances," said Martin. "We appreciate his leadership and believe he will continue to serve GCS well as an administrator." Slate's contract with GCS was recently extended until 2015.
