Grant and Fund-Raising Policy Updates Open for Public Comment

The Guilford County Board of Education is considering revisions to its policy and procedure regarding grant funding, and drafted a new policy for soliciting funds. Before the board makes a final decision, the policies will be open to public comment for 30 days.

The revision is designed to streamline proposals through GCS’ Grants Office, ensuring the funds are allotted in the way they were intended and increasing oversight of grants that require research or existing GCS resources.

The new policy regarding solicitation of funds requires pre-approval by the Grants Office before any request for donations is made on behalf of GCS. It also requires that employees soliciting funds as individuals do not violate student confidentiality requirements or use GCS intellectual property in their solicitations.

“We are updating our policies to keep up with current times,” explains Nora Carr, GCS’ chief of staff. “Ongoing budget constraints and new technologies like Go Fund Me raise new questions about what is appropriate and what is not. The intent of these policies is to help answer those questions."
