New Principals Named for Northern High, Gibsonville Elementary

Two GCS schools will have new principals on the first day of school. Northern High and Gibsonville Elementary principals were approved by the board of education at its meeting on Thursday.

Janiese McKenzie will serve as principal of Northern High. McKenzie has been assistant principal at the school since 2013 and was also Northern’s curriculum facilitator, graduation coach, AP coordinator, induction coach and a science teacher. She was also a science teacher at Western High and an administrative intern at Mendenhall Middle.

During McKenzie’s time at Northern, the school’s graduation rate has risen to above 99 percent and the school has consistently exceeded expected growth.

Marcy Roan will lead Gibsonville Elementary. Roan has been an assistant principal at Ferndale Middle since 2014, where she developed and led a schoolwide literacy program and served as the sixth- and seventh-grade administrator. During her time at Ferndale, mean scores for English Language Arts increased a combined 9.49 percent and mean scores for math increased by 10.44 percent.

Before her time at Ferndale, she was a Mission Possible Program Specialist, as well as an academic coach for the Northern Region.

Both McKenzie and Roan will be in their new roles on the first day of school August 29.
