GCS Teacher Wins Duke University Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize
Weaver Academy Visual Arts Teacher Steven Cozart recently received the 2016 Dorothea Lange – Paul Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies and Duke University.
Cozart earned the award for his piece, “The Pass/Fail Series,” which explores colorism within the African-American community.
He interviewed friends, family, colleagues and students to make paintings, drawings, mixed-media collages and short videos. Cozart then used the materials to create combinations of imagery and text.
Named for photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor, the $10,000 prize is given to encourage and support documentary artists in their work.
Cozart’s work has also been exhibited at North Carolina’s Greenville Museum of Art, the Center for Visual Arts in Greensboro, Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, the African American Atelier and the Randolph Artist Guild.
