Sam Kasias: GCS Volunteer of the Month for January 2017

Sam Kasias enjoys working with students at Oak Hill Elementary School and encouraging them to get a good education.

Since 2011, Sam Kasias has volunteered every morning at Oak Hill Elementary School. Although retired, Kasias still devotes time to the community. He has a passion for helping the young students. In pursuing his passion, Kasias spends time helping fourth grade students to read in small groups. He works with teachers to prepare for each day in the classroom. Kasias enjoys volunteering at Oak Hill and has built rapport with school administrators. He often tells funny jokes with the front office staff to start the day.

School administrators and staff are appreciative of the assistance Sam provides every day. “Sam is the most dedicated volunteer I have seen,” says Melinda Shrewsbury, assistant principal at the school and one of three individuals who nominated Kasias. “He is always kind, caring, and positive with the students! He is an amazing volunteer for our school,” adds Bethany Cline, kindergarten teacher.” Lindsay Cervenek, first grade teacher says, “He makes the students feel great and often checks in when finished to see if he can assist with any other tasks.”

As the GCS Volunteer of the Month, Kasias was presented with a $50 VISA gift card, courtesy of Rice Toyota who has sponsored the program since 2013. During the month of January, his photo will hang at the district’s central offices, Oak Hill Elementary and Rice Toyota Collision Center.
